Chapter 90 They Were Not Destined to Be Together
Nicole was busy with work. After finalizing the time with Amelia, Nicole ended the call.
Amelia was about to put her phone down, but it rang.
Amelia saw that it was an unfamiliar number and furrowed her brows. Thinking that it might be a call from one of Amber's friends, Amelia didn't answer the call and put her phone down.
Much later, Frederick called Amelia.
Amelia answered the call. She heard Frederick's deep voice saying, "Tomorrow is Mrs. Lakoff's birthday. She just called you, but you didn't answer. She asked me to tell you."
Amelia paused but didn't reply. She hung up the phone directly and dialed the unfamiliar number from earlier.
Laura answered the call, and Amelia heard her friendly voice.
"Is this Ms. Davis?"
Amelia answered, "Yes. Mrs. Lakoff, it's Amelia Davis."
Laura laughed. "Tomorrow is my birthday, so I want to invite you and Frederick to come to my house for dinner. I didn't expect you to hide your relationship. Fortunately, the staff in my house saw the news online. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known you were Frederick's wife."
Amelia smiled and said, "I didn't tell you last time because Frederick and I were already preparing for a divorce. I am no longer his wife."
Laura remained silent for a few seconds. "Why did you get divorced? Because of Amber?"
Amelia tightened her grip on her phone. "No. There were many reasons."
Amelia and Frederick had been married for three years. Their divorce was not solely because of Amber, but Amber's presence made Amelia realize that Frederick didn't love her.
Amelia endured a loveless marriage for three years. After Amber returned, Frederick proposed a divorce. Amelia had thought, 'I don't need to continue holding onto this marriage anymore.'
Laura sighed. "Will you come over tomorrow?"
Amelia smiled and replied. "Since you invited me, of course I will."
Hearing Amelia's response, Laura visibly became much happier.
The next day, Amelia put on some makeup to ensure she looked healthy. As she left, Amelia brought the gift she had prepared for Laura and said goodbye to Vincent.
The last time Amelia went out alone, she injured her foot. Therefore, Vincent was worried and reminded her constantly to be careful as she left.
Frederick parked his car in front of Davis Manor. Standing at the front door, Frederick was confused. He had just entered the password, but he found it was incorrect.
Apparently, Amelia had the password changed the previous evening.
Seeing Amelia walking out in a white dress and carrying a box, Frederick calmed down and walked toward her. Hearing Vincent sternly asking Amelia to be safe, Frederick immediately reassured him.
"Vincent, don't worry. I will take good care of her."
Vincent nodded, but he felt that Amelia could only be in danger when she was with Frederick.
"Drive slowly. Amelia's foot is just healing. If anything happens to her foot again, she might get sick again."
Frederick nodded and reached out to take the box from Amelia's hands. Amelia didn't refuse. She handed him the box. Frederick intended to put it in the trunk, but he saw Amelia open the back door.
Frederick immediately placed the box on the back seat and looked at Amelia.
Calmly, Frederick said, "You sit in the passenger seat."
Amelia raised her eyebrows but didn't refuse. She opened the passenger door and bent down to get in.
Standing at the front door, Vincent watched Amelia with concern. Amelia waved at Vincent, motioning for him to go back inside. Vincent turned around and went back into the house, but after taking a few steps, he returned to ask Frederick to ensure that Amelia would not be harmed. Once he received Frederick's assurance, Vincent went inside.
There was hardly any conversation between Amelia and Frederick during the drive.
After Laura and Patrick retired, they moved back to Lakoff Manor, their suburban villa in Kasfee.
The bus did not go directly to Lakoff Manor, so Amber had to walk for over ten minutes to get there. As she walked, Amber saw Frederick driving by and became excited, immediately waving at him. Frederick seemed to not notice Amber and drove right past her without even stopping.
Amelia glanced out the window and saw her. "Amber is walking. Aren't you going to stop and give her a ride?" she asked.
Frederick hardly hesitated and immediately replied, "There's not enough space in the car."
Amelia raised an eyebrow and glanced at the back seat, where Amelia and Frederick's respective gifts were placed. She calmly withdrew her gaze but did not say anything.
Frederick parked the car at the entrance of Lakoff Manor, and Patrick came over immediately upon seeing him. Amelia opened the car door and got out to greet Patrick on her own.
"Mr. Lakoff, hello," she said.
Seeing Amelia, Patrick smiled. "Come inside and have a seat. We're in the boonies, and transportation here isn't very convenient. I'm sure you're exhausted from coming over."
Upon hearing Patrick's words, Amelia immediately responded, "Mr. Lakoff, we're not tired. The air and environment out here are good. It's beneficial for Mrs. Lakoff's recovery."
Patrick smiled and led Amelia into the house. The yard was filled with plants, and the flowers were in full bloom. Sitting in the yard, Laura saw Amelia come in and stood up with a smile. Amelia walked over and helped Laura walk. They chatted as they went inside.
Frederick and Patrick brought the gifts inside. When Laura saw Frederick bringing in so many gifts, she said, "I just asked you to come over for a casual meal. You didn't need to bring so many things."
Frederick glanced at Amelia. "She brought them."
Laura took Amelia's hand and gently said that Amelia shouldn't bring so many gifts.
Laura and Patrick didn't have children, so their students came to help prepare for today's banquet.
After Amelia and Frederick arrived, the busy people in the kitchen couldn't help but come out to see them.
Amelia also went to work in the kitchen. Although Amelia couldn't cook, she could help wash vegetables.
When Amber arrived, she saw Laura washing vegetables in the backyard with Amelia.
Frederick stood at the door of the backyard.
He was staring at Amelia the whole time, but he secretly smiled.
Amber tightened her grip on the gifts she was carrying. After placing the gifts on the table, she walked to the backyard, breaking this brief happiness.
"Mrs. Lakoff, you haven't fully recovered yet. You should rest first. I can wash the vegetables."
Seeing Amber, Laura was visibly stunned. Obviously, Laura didn't expect Amber to come.
When Amelia heard Amber's voice, she looked up at Amber and quietly continued washing the vegetables. Amelia was calm. Amber didn't affect her.
