Chapter 418 I'll Report You for Poisoning Maria
Amelia was still itching to dig deeper, but Rachel had already retreated to her bedroom.
Seeing the door shut tight, Amelia just sighed and shuffled back to her own room.
Anna must've been wiped out today, 'cause Amelia didn't bother waking her up.
Amelia hit the bathroom, grabbed some water, and cleaned up Anna's face, hands, and feet before tucking her back in.
Just as she flopped onto her bed, her phone screen lit up.
Amelia grabbed her phone and saw a message from Frederick.
Frederick: [Got caught up in Mr. Wright's mess; Dad booted me out of Davis Manor too.]
Reading that, Amelia could almost see Frederick's annoyed face. She couldn't help but chuckle and text back.
Amelia: [Until Rachel's marriage drama is sorted, Dad's not gonna let you crash here openly.]
Frederick: [I feel so blue.]
With a grin, Amelia replied again.
Amelia: [Drive safe, don't get distracted.]
Frederick: [Okay.]
Not wanting to bug him while he was driving, Amelia didn't text back.
About ten minutes later, Frederick sent a few kissing emojis and a message.
Frederick: [Babe, I'm home. The bed's freezing without you. Dad won't let me move to your place. How about you come over here?]
Amelia hesitated, unsure what to say. After a bit, Frederick retracted the message.
Seeing the "Message retracted" notification, Amelia stayed quiet for a moment, then put her phone down without replying.
The next morning, Frederick showed up at Davis Manor early, just like always.
After breakfast, he took Anna out and dropped Amelia off at the hospital before heading to work.
As Amelia walked into the hospital, she spotted Elijah storming past her, looking pissed.
A flicker of confusion crossed Amelia's face as she turned to watch him. Elijah was moving fast and soon vanished into the crowd.
Shaking it off, Amelia stepped into the elevator, mulling over some stuff Rodolfo had mentioned earlier. She then headed to Maria's ward to check on her.
Walking into Maria's room, she saw Constance holding a cup of water, feeding it to Maria. But the water was this weird, deep black color.
Amelia's eyes narrowed as she asked sharply, "Constance, what are you giving Maria to drink?"
Constance's hand jerked, spilling some water. She turned to Amelia with a guilty smile. "Oh, nothing, just a drink from my hometown. The kids there drink it all the time."
Frowning, Amelia walked over. "Let me see." She reached out for the cup.
Constance quickly hid the cup behind her back. "Dr. Davis, it's just an herbal drink from my hometown, it's beneficial for health. We drink it all the time," she insisted.
Amelia's face darkened as she motioned for Constance to hand over the cup.
Constance refused. While they were at a standoff, Maria, lying on the bed, suddenly turned pale and puked all over the place.
Amelia's face tightened. She hit the service bell and checked on Maria, ignoring Constance.
Flustered but still defiant, Constance stammered, "Maria probably just caught a chill. That's why she vomited. This stuff is harmless. Look, I'll drink it myself." With that, she downed the rest of the cup.
Amelia didn't have time for her nonsense. She pushed Constance aside and helped Maria breathe easier.
The door swung open, and Jessica, who had been hovering nearby, rushed in, alarmed by the commotion. "What happened?" she demanded.
Amelia, patting Maria's back, told the nurse next to her, "Take Maria's vomit to the lab for testing."
After saying that, she turned to Jessica. "I don't know what Constance gave Maria, but she's having a bad reaction."
Jessica's face darkened. She frowned and snatched the cup from Constance's hand, giving it a sniff.
Constance looked super nervous but still tried to defend herself. "This is just..."
Jessica cut her off with a sharp frown, her face looking grim.
She had given Maria a reasonable dose of medication before, but because Maria's body had been acting up lately, everyone thought her treatment plan was the problem.
Thinking it over, Jessica realized that Maria's adverse reactions started after Elijah and Constance showed up.
Now, realizing that Constance might have given Maria some other medicine on the sly, causing a chain reaction, Jessica was fuming.
Everyone had been blaming her, and she felt really wronged.
Jessica, her voice tight with anger, demanded, "Where's the rest of the medicine? If you don't hand it over, I'll report you for poisoning Maria."
Hearing Jessica mention calling the cops, Constance looked super tense.
She shot back, "Report? I did this for Maria's good. I specially requested for this medicine. The healer cures many tough diseases in my hometown. I'll give you the rest of the medicine."
As she spoke, Constance took out the remaining pills.
Jessica snatched the medicine, her face grim, and immediately took it to the lab for testing.
Watching Jessica leave, Constance pouted. "Nowadays, these young doctors' attitudes are getting worse. I don't know why they act so cocky."
Amelia gave Constance a cold look.
Constance immediately changed the subject, muttering, "I did it for Maria's good, hoping her condition would improve quickly."
Amelia didn't want to hear Constance's excuses. She helped the nurse transfer Maria to the examination room.
Sandra, who was downstairs taking care of patients, rushed upstairs upon hearing that Maria had puked.
Constance got to Sandra before Amelia, grabbing her hand and crying, "Sandra, I just gave Maria some medicine from our hometown. You know that healer, right? I got some medicine from him. As soon as I gave it to Maria, she puked. I meant well but did something wrong. If anything happens to Maria, I won't be able to face you."
Sandra was already anxious, and with Constance putting on a tearful show in front of her, she was even more flustered.
Seeing Sandra ignoring her, Constance sat on the floor, throwing a tantrum and acting like she was about to die from guilt.
Sandra had no choice but to spend energy comforting her.
Maria hadn't drunk much of the medicine, and she had puked most of it out earlier. After an examination, she was found to be fine.
When Amelia came out, she saw Constance sitting on a chair with red, tearful eyes. Sandra, obviously concerned, rushed over to Amelia. "Dr. Davis, how is Maria?"
Amelia took a deep breath, glanced at Constance, and said seriously, "From now on, you should take care of Maria yourself. The elderly may mean well, but relying on folk remedies and unverified treatments can seriously harm Maria. We can't afford any more mistakes."
Sandra quickly nodded, her face set with determination. "Okay, I'll quit my job as a caregiver."
Hearing Amelia's words, Constance looked at her with hatred, regretting that she had forgotten to close the ward door when giving Maria the medicine today.
