Chapter 26 Not Suitable
Daniel was a bit stern as he spoke earnestly, "Mr. Worthington, I've already arranged to meet with Ms. Rachel Davis. You are suddenly canceling, which is very inconvenient for me..."
Kenneth interrupted Daniel before he could finish, his laughter cutting through the tension, "I simply can't get out of tonight's gathering. It's mainly because Mr. Montgomery is the host."
Dominick Montgomery was an esteemed elder in the Kasfee business community. Many of the younger businesspeople in Kasfee had benefited from Dominick's mentorship and guidance.
The Worthington family had nearly gone bankrupt at one point, and it was only because of Dominick's guarantee that they were able to regroup and flourish.
Kenneth truly couldn't refuse this invitation.
Daniel had been abroad for many years, and most of the Vanderbilt family's assets were overseas.
Consequently, the Vanderbilt family wasn't close with Dominick.
When Daniel had gone abroad, he hadn't been involved in managing the Vanderbilt estate, so he hadn't met Dominick.
The connections Daniel was leveraging now were those the Vanderbilt family had cultivated before he left the country.
Seeing that Daniel wasn't responding, Kenneth chuckled, "I'm really sorry, Mr. Vanderbilt. How about I take you and Ms. Rachel Davis out for a meal another day? I have to go now. Goodbye."
After Kenneth hung up, a call from Rachel came in.
Daniel saw it was Rachel calling and answered, "Rachel."
Rachel hummed in acknowledgment before apologizing, "Daniel, I'm sorry, but I won't be able to make it to our gathering tonight. Did Kenneth call you as well?"
Daniel replied, "Yes."
"Did Mr. Montgomery invite you too?" Rachel asked.
"Yes," Daniel confirmed.
"I need to stop by there as well. Is Amelia with you?"
Glancing at Amelia, a hint of defeat flickered in his eyes, "Yes."
"I'll come to pick her up right now," Rachel said promptly.
"Okay."
After Rachel hung up, she immediately drove their way.
Daniel put away his phone and turned to Amelia, "Amelia, I'm truly sorry. It seems I wasn't able to be much help this time."
"When Mr. Montgomery steps in, the issue will surely be resolved, so you don't have to worry," Amelia said. Although she wasn't a business insider, she knew who Dominick was.
Back when the Davis family was riding high, Dominick often visited the Davis Manor as a guest. However, as the Davis family fell on hard times, families that were once close to them became noticeably more distant over the years.
Amelia could clearly see the defeat in Daniel's eyes, so she promptly and politely said, "I'm sorry. We had promised to have a meal together, and now we've been delayed by other matters.
"You've been such a help these past few days."
Daniel didn't respond, his smile tinged with a touch of bitterness.
Rachel had already approached Dominick, but the Montgomerys had been putting off the matter, citing Dominick's poor health as the reason. This time, Dominick's sudden invitation for Kenneth and Rachel to dine at Montgomery Manor meant that Frederick must have intervened behind the scenes.
Daniel wasn't very confident about this lobbying effort. After all, his friendship with Kenneth dates back many years. Now that Dominick was involved, the matter was sure to be resolved satisfactorily. Frederick needed only a word to help the Davis Group out of the crisis.
This gave Daniel a deep sense of powerlessness.
Rachel's car arrived quickly. After bidding Daniel farewell, Amelia got into Rachel's car, and they headed to Montgomery Manor together.
At the entrance of Montgomery Manor, Frederick's car was parked at the curb.
As Amelia opened the door to get out, Frederick came down from his car.
Frederick watched Amelia silently, not saying a word, just gesturing to her with a wave of his hand.
She paused, standing still in confusion.
Rachel murmured softly, "It was Frederick who called Mr. Montgomery and persuaded him, which is why Mr. Montgomery agreed to take a stand for the Davis family."
Hearing this, Amelia bit her lip lightly, holding back the odd feeling inside, and walked towards him.
As soon as she stepped in, Frederick wrapped an arm around her waist, his tone indifferent.
"Mr. Montgomery has always wanted to meet my wife."
Amelia felt a surge of nervousness—the first time Frederick had taken her out for socializing. Noticing her slightly stiff posture, he glanced down at her with a mocking smile. "Weren't you quite capable when you dined with those real estate developers before?"
Amelia was at a loss for words.
Frederick held her tightly and pulled her closer to his side. "Don't be afraid. Mr. Montgomery doesn’t bite."
"Besides, Rachel will handle everything if there's any issue."
Rachel, following right behind them, caught Frederick's mention and directed her gaze toward Amelia.
"It's okay, Amelia. I'm here for you."
With Rachel's presence, Amelia felt an inexplicable sense of security.
However, the subtle fragrance emanating from Frederick made her a bit uneasy. She used to love that scent on him, but ever since she had learned about its origin in Amber's hospital room, she had grown to despise it.
They entered the living room.
Dominick was seated on the sofa, chatting with a few young people. He loved lively gatherings and thus hosted parties every month, even making a point to invite younger guests over for meals.
Rachel paused as she stepped into the living room.
Sebastian was seated opposite Dominick, conversing and smiling with him. Sebastian’s manner was the epitome of maturity and stability, a stark contrast to his boyish appearance in the past.
She hadn't expected Sebastian to be there.
Rachel had thought Dominick had only invited Frederick, herself, and Kenneth for the day.
Upon seeing Frederick arrive with Amelia and Rachel, Dominick smiled and nodded his head warmly.
"Frederick, welcome, come and sit."
Frederick nodded and, with Amelia in tow, took a seat opposite Dominick.
Noticing Dominick's gaze fixed on her, Amelia gently spoke up, "Mr. Montgomery, it's been a while."
Dominick nodded slightly, quite pleased with Amelia's address.
"The little girl who used to cry and follow Rachel around has grown into a beautiful woman. I hear you're working at the hospital now?"
Amelia hurriedly nodded.
"Yes, Mr. Montgomery."
Dominick smiled benevolently. "The prospects for a doctor are good—a very respectable profession.
"How's your father been doing recently?"
Amelia nodded lightly. "Much better. He'll be discharged from the hospital tomorrow."
Dominick nodded and then turned his attention to Frederick.
"Speaking of which, I haven't attended your wedding with Frederick yet. Don't you plan on having a little celebration?" Despite his composed facade, Frederick's grip around Amelia's hand tightened ever so slightly. After a lengthy pause, he finally answered, "I’ve been pretty busy lately. I’ll give it some serious thought when I get a chance."
Frederick's response sounded sincere. If it weren't for their impending divorce, Amelia might have been fooled by his apparent candor at that moment.
Who said that only beautiful women could be deceivers?
She felt that Frederick was quite the charmer himself.
Rachel took a seat next to Amelia, making an effort to greet Dominick.
Dominick had always been quite fond of Rachel.
Among their circle of influential families, only the Davis family had no sons. Rachel, being a woman, had made her mark in the business world, and for that, Dominick held her in high esteem.
If it weren't for the fact that there were no eligible bachelors in the Montgomery family, Dominick would have quite liked to see one of their young men marry Rachel.
Perhaps it was his age, but he seemed increasingly concerned about the marital affairs of the young, especially since Rachel was nearly thirty.
Consequently, Dominick glanced at Sebastian beside him, then back at Rachel. "Rachel, you're not married yet, are you?"
Rachel didn't look at Sebastian and replied coolly, "Not yet.
"My father has also been worried about finding me a good match lately. Mr. Montgomery, do you have anyone suitable in mind? If you do, I’d appreciate an introduction."
Suddenly, a mocking voice rang out from the doorway.
"Aren't I the best candidate?"
