Chapter 252 What Was He Thinking in Those Few Seconds He Stood Still?

After lunch, Rachel took out her card to pay the bill.

The waiter approached respectfully, his expression very polite. He said, "Ms. Davis, Mr. Hastings has already taken care of the bill."

Rachel didn't stand on ceremony, put away her card, and then smiled. "Thank you, Mr. Hastings, for the treat."

Frederick nodded slightly and replied in a low tone, "You're welcome."

As he spoke, he took a napkin from the side and wiped the grease off Anna's hands from the meal, looking every bit the dutiful father.

Seeing his behavior, Rachel chuckled softly and then said to Amelia, "Are you going back to the hospital this afternoon?"

Amelia shook her head, "No, I'll rest this afternoon and go back to work tomorrow."

Rachel nodded, "Alright, I'll take you and Vincent home."

As soon as Rachel finished speaking, Sebastian eagerly looked up at her.

Rachel had promised to talk with him after the meal.

Frederick glanced at the useless Sebastian and spoke heavily, "I'll take Vincent and Amelia home. You and Sebastian probably have things to discuss."

Since the beginning of the meal, Sebastian had been absent-minded. Usually so fond of lively gatherings, he had suddenly become quiet, which Frederick found unusual.

The two had grown up together as good friends, so Frederick understood Sebastian's current mood.

During the meal, Amelia noticed Sebastian looking longingly at Rachel as if he had a lot to say.

There might have been some conflict between them, so Amelia also hoped that Rachel and Sebastian could resolve it.

Amelia agreed, "Mr. Hastings, if you don't mind, we'll take your car back."

Frederick felt a bit frustrated hearing Amelia call him "Mr. Hastings," but he didn't show it on his face.

Seeing that Amelia had agreed to take Frederick's car, Rachel didn't insist. She picked up her handbag from the side and glanced at Sebastian.

Rachel said faintly, "Let's go."

Sebastian quickly followed upon hearing this.

As soon as they stepped out of the private room, they heard a commotion in the hallway.

"Clara Hill, I asked you to accompany a client, and you managed to offend them. It's just a drink. Why is it so hard for you? You've already had a child. Why are you still pretending to be so virtuous? Don't forget that you and your son are both being supported by the Hill family! For the Hill family, what's wrong with sacrificing a bit of your beauty?" one shouted.

When Amelia heard the name "Clara," a chill ran down her spine, and she instinctively looked at Rachel.

Amelia was all too familiar with this name. Clara was the very person who had caused Rachel and Sebastian to break up.

Rachel remained unchanged, her gaze lightly sweeping over the slightly stiff Sebastian.

Rachel sneered, "Aren't you going to help?"

Sebastian immediately looked at Rachel, and quickly said, "Honey, what does others' business have to do with me?"

Rachel's cold eyes glanced at him, and she walked out of the private room calmly without saying another word.

Seeing this, Sebastian quickly followed.

In the hallway.

Clara kept her head down in silence, her eyes red, enduring her sister Helen's scolding.

The economic environment had not been favorable these past two years. The Hill family that only focused on the single industry was hit the hardest. Helen, being ambitious, had seen the Hill family decline over the years, and she had developed severe psychological issues, even suffering from mania.

Rachel had once seen Helen at a business conference, where she had physically and verbally abused an assistant who had made a mistake before breaking down emotionally.

At this moment, seeing Clara with her head down, speechless, Helen flared up her anger even more. Unable to control her emotions, she slapped Clara hard.

Caught off guard, Clara nearly fell from the forceful slap, stumbling a few steps before regaining her balance.

Clara covered her face. At the thought of Sebastian and Rachel coming out of the adjacent private room, her eyes reddened even more.

Rachel glanced at Sebastian, whose eyes showed a hint of restraint, indifferently, looked away, and walked downstairs.

Sebastian stood still for a few seconds before following.

Helen also noticed Sebastian and the others coming out of the adjacent private room.

Seeing that Sebastian's gaze did not linger on Clara, Helen looked at Clara with a mocking expression.

Helen sneered, "They've already left. Why are you still pretending to be pitiful?"

Clara kept her head down, sobbing uncontrollably.

Helen, with a cold face, continued to mock her. "We even sent you to his bed back then, and you still couldn't hold onto him. Clara, you missed your chance. The Hill family has been generously supporting you all these years. What's your use?"

Clara trembled her heart, and tears fell like beads.

Amelia, holding Anna, walked beside Frederick while Vincent sighed and shook his head as they went downstairs.

Over the years, anyone who knew the Hill family was somewhat aware of Helen's ways.

Amelia was more worried about Rachel.

Rachel had broken up with Sebastian because of Clara. Now Rachel had postponed her wedding, likely because she knew Clara had returned.

Clara had always been a thorn in the side of both Rachel and Sebastian.

Sebastian had always thought Rachel had found a better option. Clara was sent to his bed to get rid of him, the illegitimate son of the Kingsley family.

But with Rachel's character, she would never stoop to such actions.

Although they had reconciled, they had avoided discussing the past all these years.

Now that Clara was back, things were different.

Clara's unfortunate situation in the Hill family wasn't caused by Rachel. However, Clara caused Rachel's emotional troubles.

Amelia couldn't bring herself to sympathize with Clara.

Frederick noticed the worry in Amelia's expression and saw that she was distracted while walking, so he took Anna into his arms.

Frederick said calmly, "Rachel is very clear-headed. She won't suffer in this matter. You can rest assured."

Amelia paused upon hearing this, looked at Frederick with a heavy gaze, and spoke with a hint of displeasure, "Not suffering doesn't mean not feeling sad."

In the two years after Rachel and Sebastian broke up, Rachel had thrown herself into her work.

They were sisters born of the same mother, and Amelia knew very well how much Rachel had suffered.

After leaving the restaurant, Rachel got into the car. Sebastian quickly followed, opening the door and getting in.

"Rachel," Sebastian hesitated to speak.

Rachel's gaze was calm as she glanced at him. Before Sebastian could speak, she asked first, "Sebastian, you hesitated in those few seconds. What were you thinking?"
