Chapter 41 The Thought of Divorce
Amelia followed Frederick into his office.
It was her first time visiting his office. The cool color tones matched his demeanor well.
Once inside, Frederick glanced at her calmly.
"Have a seat wherever you like."
She was about to discuss divorce with him.
Felix knocked on the office door. "Mr. Hastings, there's an urgent document that requires your signature."
Frederick nodded.
Felix walked over, respectfully handing the document to Frederick.
Amelia chose not to sit but instead stood to one side.
While reviewing the document, Frederick looked up at Amelia, his eyes filled with inquiry.
Amelia pressed her lips together, speaking softly, "After you sign the document, I have something I need to discuss with you."
Frederick returned his gaze to the document in hand.
Felix felt that Frederick was taking an unusually long time to review the document today.
After waiting several minutes and seeing that Frederick still hadn't finished, he asked, "Mr. Hastings, is there something wrong with the document?"
Frederick didn't respond, only giving him a look.
Felix was a bit perplexed.
He sensed blame in Frederick's look earlier.
Felix thought, "Did I do something wrong?"
Not daring to inquire further, Felix stood quietly to the side, waiting.
A few more minutes passed before Frederick picked up a pen and signed his name on the signature line of the document.
There was nothing wrong with the paper.
Feeling somewhat relieved, Felix took the document and immediately left the office.
Once Frederick finished signing, Amelia took the divorce agreement out of her bag.
Just as she took out the papers, Frederick's phone rang.
Without even glancing at her, he picked it up to answer.
It was Mina, Amber's caretaker, on the line. For some reason, Frederick usually handed the phone to Felix when that number was called, but this time, he felt a strange sense of relief from answering it himself. Turning his back to Amelia, he spoke into the phone.
"What's the matter?"
Mina's tone was urgent.
"Mr. Hastings, Ms. Roberts has been rushed to the emergency room. Ms. Roberts has been in a poor mood these past few days. She wanted to get some fresh air today. While I was in the restroom, Ms. Roberts unfortunately slipped down the stairs."
Frederick frowned, his expression turning very serious.
"I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, he got up, ready to leave.
Amelia frowned and immediately reached out to grab Frederick.
"I need to talk to you."
Frederick removed Amelia's hand and said with a meaningful look, "Let's talk another day."
With that, he left the office without looking back.
Amelia stood still, it took her a while to recover. The divorce papers she had been clutching tightly didn't even get a chance to be handed over.
She took a deep breath to calm herself.
That's when Nicole called her.
Amelia pressed the answer button.
Nicole's angry voice came through. "I am so frustrated with Amber!"
Remembering how Frederick had hastily left just moments ago, Amelia couldn't help asking, "What happened now?"
Nicole exclaimed angrily, "I told her to rest in bed, but she insisted on walking around and nearly fell down the stairs. She's been groaning in pain, so we all rushed her to the emergency room. It turns out she only sprained her ankle."
Amelia furrowed her brows, "She must have been scared. Since she's alright, I won't go over."
Nicole vented a bit more before ending the call with Amelia.
Rachel had seen earlier that day that Amelia had taken the documents, so she sent her a message:[Where are you? I'll pick you up.]
After seeing the message, Amelia replied: ["I'm at Hastings Group."]
Rachel replied quickly: ["I'm waiting downstairs for you."]
Amelia raised an eyebrow.
She steadied her emotions and placed the divorce papers back in her bag, then walked out of Frederick's office.
The secretary at the door greeted her with a professional yet pleasing smile, "Goodbye, Mrs. Hastings."
Hearing "Mrs. Hastings" felt ironic to Amelia. She didn't reply and headed straight into the elevator.
The secretary found Amelia a bit cold. Compared to the gentle Amber, she found Amelia harder to approach.
She preferred someone more approachable, like Amber.
When Amelia left the Hastings Group, Rachel was already there.
She saw Rachel's car, walked over, opened the passenger door, and bent to get in.
"Did he sign it?" Rachel asked.
Amelia shook her head.
Rachel raised an eyebrow, "What's the issue? Is there a clause he's unhappy with?"
Amelia sighed, "He left without even looking at the divorce papers."
Rachel was silent.
Neither spoke for a while. Then, looking out the window, Amelia said, "It seems I'll have to go directly to Brittany."
She was determined to bring up the divorce in front of Brittany and pulled out of the divorce agreement. This way, Frederick would not be distracted by other matters. Rachel nodded in agreement, signaling her support.
"Divorce proceedings these days are complicated and time-consuming. You need to take care of it as soon as possible."
Amelia agreed, "Okay."
Currently, divorce procedures at the courthouse are very complex, requiring roughly thirty days to complete. Only after finalizing all the divorce paperwork and obtaining the divorce decree could Amelia finally feel at ease.
Rachel then spoke to Amelia about her plans to study abroad. Amelia had received an acceptance letter from a medical school at Fondaniss three years ago. However, at the time, she chose to stay in the country for Frederick.
Now that she decided to study abroad, Fondaniss was her top choice. "I'll go to Fondaniss. The medical standards there are very high, and they have some advanced technology. I can even learn while I'm preparing for childbirth," said Amelia.
Upon hearing about Fondaniss, Rachel nodded. "The Vanderbilt family is doing quite well in Fondaniss these days. Daniel's parents are there too. Our families have a really good relationship. They can look after you. I'll make a trip to Fondaniss soon, arrange a house for you near Daniel's place, and hire a few servants. You can move in directly when it's time."
Amelia was touched by Rachel's thoughtful consideration. She wasn't showing much yet and didn't need care. But as her pregnancy advanced and she became less mobile, she would definitely need assistance. Having acquaintances in Fondaniss would be better.
Amelia and Rachel returned to their home together. After dinner, they chatted for a while before Amelia retired to her bedroom.
Frederick didn't call her till she fell asleep. It was as if he couldn't care less about why she came looking for him at Hastings Group. Such indifference from Frederick deeply saddened Amelia. They had been married for three years, yet she felt like nothing more than a shadow in his life. Her desire for a divorce peaked at that moment.
