Chapter 443 Don't Blame Daddy
In Nancy's mind, Amelia wasn't even worth considering as competition.
Layla noticed Nancy's relaxed demeanor and gently warned, "This is just the start. Vincent and Rachel have pampered her since she was a kid, so she might not be that skilled. But Rachel's a different story. You need to watch out for her."
Nancy shrugged off Layla's warning. She turned away from the window, a smirk playing on her lips.
"Seriously? A woman who got her spot through connections? What's there to worry about?" Nancy said, leaning back in her chair with a sneer. "But don't worry, I won't underestimate her. Amelia is just a start to me."
Layla chuckled, smoothing Nancy's hair. "If only Shirley were as sharp as you, we wouldn't have lost to Charles."
Nancy's eyes blazed with determination. "One day, I'll have all the Wright family's assets in my hands. And then, I'll crush Charles under my heel."
Layla beamed with pride. "Nancy, you're incredible! I'll definitely help you make that happen."
Nancy's smile turned cold. "I've come to Kasfee, and that fool Shirley probably doesn't even know yet. She hasn't called me once since she got back. Seems like she doesn't care about me as her sister."
With that, Nancy pulled out her phone, found Shirley's number, and dialed.
Meanwhile, Amelia took a deep breath and walked through the gates of Davis Manor.
Vincent had been watching from inside. When he saw Nancy get out of the car, he immediately came out. Just as he reached the stairs, he saw Amelia return.
Amelia had composed herself, not wanting Vincent and the others to worry. Seeing Vincent hurrying down the stairs, she quickly stepped forward.
"Dad, didn't I tell you to wait inside? Why did you come out?" Amelia asked.
Vincent, noticing Amelia's calm expression, relaxed a bit. "I was worried about you. Rachel's not home, and you've never dealt with people like them. I was afraid you couldn't handle it."
Amelia smiled and took his arm. "Dad, I'm an adult now. I can handle these things. Let's go inside."
Vincent nodded, patting her hand. "Amelia, what did they say to you? Don't hide anything from me. Even though I'm old, I can still help you with a lot."
Amelia tightened her grip on his arm and replied warmly, "Dad, there's nothing to hide. Ms. Murphy wanted to make up, but I refused. She got mad and said some nasty things. That's all."
Vincent sighed in relief but then frowned. "She hasn't changed a bit. Still thinks everything has to go her way."
Vincent shook his head, clearly not having a high opinion of Layla. But he held back from saying too much in front of Amelia.
Amelia bit her lip, thinking about how Layla's attitude had changed toward her. Layla had never really seen her as a daughter from the start.
Luckily, Amelia had never expected much from her mom, always thinking she had passed away. So, Layla's treatment, while uncomfortable, wasn't devastating.
But Nancy's words really got under her skin.
Vincent noticed Amelia's serious expression and asked, "Amelia, what's wrong?"
Amelia took a deep breath and said, "I'm worried about Frederick."
Vincent frowned and said, "Tonight, I'll ask a friend to let you see Frederick."
Amelia nodded, trying to shake off her negative emotions.
Inside, Anna was still on the carpet, playing with toys Frederick had recently bought her. She was working on a puzzle but couldn't quite solve it.
Frustrated, she put down the toy and looked up as Vincent and Amelia walked in.
Anna's little face was downcast, and she mumbled, "Why isn't Daddy home yet? Can I call Daddy?"
Without Frederick, she couldn't even finish her puzzle. She really needed his help.
Amelia felt a pang of sadness. She walked over, picked Anna up, and said softly, "How about I help you with the puzzle?"
Anna nodded but still missed Frederick. She tilted her head and asked, "Mommy, is Daddy so busy he can't even take my call?"
Amelia's hands paused, and she looked down at Anna's innocent face. She was looking up with a puzzled expression.
Since Frederick and Anna had reunited, he had come to the Davis Manor almost every day to be with her.
Now that he hadn't been around for a while, Anna was naturally upset.
Vincent noticed Amelia's mood seemed off, so he walked over, ruffled Anna's hair, and said, "Your dad's dealing with a tough problem at work. He needs time. When he's free, he'll definitely call you. And I'll make him apologize. Sweetie, you're still so young. How can your dad be away for so long, right?"
Anna nodded seriously.
Amelia composed herself, hugged Anna tighter, and added gently, "So, when your dad comes back, I'll give him a good scolding. How could he make you worry and miss him so much without even a phone call?"
Anna listened to Amelia's slightly resentful words, was silent for a moment, and then muttered, "Mommy, let's forgive Daddy this time. He's busy with work, not on purpose. Don't blame Daddy."
Anna was afraid Amelia would really scold Frederick, so she started speaking up for him.
Vincent saw Anna's worried little face and couldn't help but laugh. It amused Amelia too, but her heart ached.
