Chapter 297 Go Check on Dylan
Shirley had never won over Layla's affection.
The moment Layla found out she was pregnant, she was convinced it was a boy and had all these high hopes pinned on it. But when Shirley made her debut into the world, not only did she shatter Layla's grand expectations, but the ordeal also left Layla grappling with a brutal hemorrhage that dashed any chances of having more kids.
The Wright family tradition always favored passing down the business to sons, totally sidelining daughters like Layla's. With no other boys in the family, an older stepbrother from her father's previous marriage hogging all the family assets after their dad's passing, Layla found herself in a tough spot.
During her dad's time, Layla hadn't been too hard on Shirley, but things took a dark turn after his demise. Fortunately, her stepbrother, being the decent sort, stepped in to cover her back when Layla began tightening the purse strings.
Despite the family dynamics being all wonky, Shirley wasn't exactly besties with her sister but found a strange kind of camaraderie with her stepbrother. She noticed her brother always had an eye on Rachel, even keeping magazines with Rachel on the cover, leading Shirley to suspect that his feelings for Rachel ran deep for quite a while.
Rachel's cold gaze bore into Shirley as she uttered sharply, "Shirley, don't even entertain ideas about Frederick."
Shirley's head jerked up, caught off guard by Rachel's blunt warning. "Ms. Davis, do you have feelings for him?" she ventured, seeking some clarity.
Rachel offered no response, instead exiting the restroom silently, leaving Shirley pondering the implications of her brother's romantic interest being one-sided.
Amelia brought lunch to Hastings Group right at noon.
When Felix saw her step out of the elevator, he respectfully led her to Frederick's office.
Inside, she saw Frederick was in a video conference.
No wonder Felix had just opened the door without knocking.
Frederick noticed her and raised his bandaged right hand in greeting.
The senior managers on the video call saw Frederick's usually stern face soften with a slight smile and felt relieved, though they had no idea why.
Amelia set the lunch box on the table, and Felix quickly helped unpack the dishes.
Frederick wrapped up the video call and walked over.
Seeing Frederick approach, Felix made himself scarce, not wanting to be a third wheel.
Amelia had just started eating when her phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID; it was an unknown number. Confused, she answered.
"Hello, I am..."
Before she could finish, Cynthia's anxious voice came through.
"Amelia, it's Dylan's mom. We haven't heard from Dylan since yesterday. Can you reach him?"
Amelia frowned. After Dylan went to see Ken the day before, she couldn't get ahold of him either.
She hadn't expected Cynthia couldn't reach him too.
"Don't worry," Amelia reassured. "I'll check if Dylan came to work."
Cynthia's voice was shaky, "No, he didn't go to work. I went to the hospital this morning to look for him. I saw on the news that Ken came to Kasfee. Do you think Dylan went to find him? Amelia, do you know which hotel Ken is staying at? I need to see if Dylan is with him."
Amelia bit her lip, noticing Frederick glancing at her now and then. She spoke softly, "Mrs. Kingsley, I'll text you."
Cynthia quickly agreed, "Okay."
Throughout lunch, Amelia was almost constantly texting Cynthia.
Frederick's expression shifted from joy to coldness, and finally, he put down his fork with a loud clatter.
The noise made Amelia look up. "Are you done eating?"
Frederick replied sullenly, "Yeah."
Amelia put down her fork too. "I have something to deal with, so I have to go."
Frederick's face darkened as he watched her get up to leave. He grabbed her wrist. "Amelia, this is very disrespectful to me."
Amelia paused, looking down at Frederick sitting on the sofa with a gloomy face. After a few seconds, she asked, "Do you still need me to pick you up this afternoon?"
Frederick's face darkened further, and he looked at her with dissatisfaction. "Yeah."
Amelia nodded. "Alright, I'll come to pick you up after work."
Frederick still held her wrist tightly, his deep blue eyes staring at her. "Amelia, I'm not full yet."
Amelia's eyes showed a hint of difficulty.
Her phone rang again; it was a call from Cynthia.
She frowned slightly and answered.
Mrs. Kingsley's almost crying voice came through. "Amelia, Dylan's father found out where Dylan was last night. He has taken a whip to Kasfee Hotel. Please come quickly and help me."
Amelia frowned tightly. If Cynthia told others about this, Dylan's mental state would make it impossible for him to handle.
She took a deep breath and agreed, "I'm coming right now."
After saying that, she put away her phone and removed Frederick's hand from her wrist, speaking softly. "If you want more food, get it yourself."
Amelia quickly left without looking back.
Felix was talking to a colleague at the front desk of the CEO's office. Seeing Amelia come out of Frederick's office so quickly, his expression became a bit panicked. "Ms. Davis..."
Before Felix could finish, Amelia said, "I have some personal matters to attend to."
Amelia quickly walked into the elevator.
Felix hurriedly said, "Ms. Davis, if you need help, I can handle it for you."
Amelia shook her head and politely declined, "No need."
The fewer people who knew about Dylan's situation, the better.
As the elevator doors closed, Felix stood there in a daze for a few seconds before resigning himself to walk to Frederick's office door.
He raised his hand and knocked.
Frederick's cold, sharp voice came through. "Come in."
Felix took a deep breath. He knew that with Amelia gone, Frederick would be in a bad mood!
He walked in timidly and respectfully. "Mr. Hastings."
Frederick's icy gaze swept over him.
Felix kept his head down, not daring to meet his eyes.
After a long while, Frederick, sitting on the sofa, spoke in a deep voice. "Go check on Dylan."
