Chapter 485 Sebastian and Rachel Make Contact

Seeing that Rachel was about to leave, Amelia walked her to the door.

Her mind replayed that awful night when someone spiked Rachel's drink and Sebastian just stood by, indifferent.

It made her doubt him, so she warned, "Come back early. We need to talk."

Rachel nodded. "Sure."

Amelia added, "I'll be waiting."

Rachel nodded again, already half-absorbed in her own thoughts.

Sebastian, nearby, could sense Amelia's unease. A flicker of helplessness crossed his face. Walking beside Rachel, he murmured, "Is Amelia worried I'll hurt you?"

Rachel glanced at him, her tone cool. "Mr. Kingsley, you're overthinking it." The formal address made his chest tighten with a familiar ache.

"Rachel, I..."

However, before he could finish, Rachel cut him off, "Mr. Kingsley, we're here to discuss work today." The abruptness left him momentarily speechless, feeling the sting of rejection.

As Rachel headed to the garage for her car, he suggested, "Rachel, take my car. I'll drive you back after dinner."

Rachel politely declined. "No need. It's easier if I drive myself."

Sebastian frowned but watched her walk to the garage. After a brief pause, he followed her.

He walked to Rachel's car, opened the passenger door, and got in after she took the driver's seat.

Rachel didn't stop him, her expression calm. She asked, "Mr. Kingsley, aren't you driving your car?"

Sebastian replied softly, "I'll ride with you and we'll come back together."

Rachel didn't respond, starting the car and driving away from Davis Manor.

On the way to the restaurant, the car was filled with an uncomfortable silence. Sebastian hesitated to break it, wary of upsetting Rachel, so he decided to concentrate on the project instead.

By the time they sat down to eat, Sebastian found himself enjoying the rare chance to share a meal with Rachel, though he kept his true feelings to himself.

Throughout dinner, Rachel stayed professional, never letting the conversation get personal. However, he noticed she was not as distant as before, which brought him a slight sense of happiness.

After dinner, they left the restaurant together. The valet went to get Rachel's car, and Sebastian stood beside her, waiting.

The evening breeze was getting cooler. Noticing Rachel's light dress, he took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. Rachel's expression stayed calm as she took it off and handed it back. "Thanks, Mr. Kingsley, but I'm not cold."

Sebastian's face fell a bit at her refusal, but he didn't give up. "Rachel, we..."

Rachel cut him off again, "The car's here."

After the valet pulled up, Rachel silently took the keys and got into the car.

Sebastian slid into the passenger seat, and on the drive back, Rachel only talked about work.

This time, Sebastian wisely avoided bringing up their past. It was full of too many bad memories. If they could start fresh, he wouldn't drag up old wounds.

Rachel parked at the Davis Manor entrance and saw Amelia waiting on the balcony, a hint of a smile in her eyes.

Sebastian noticed Rachel's softened expression and couldn't help but smile wryly. "Amelia seems pretty wary of me."

Rachel's voice was calm. "She's always been cautious."

Sebastian nodded, "Yeah, just like you."

He wanted to keep talking, but Rachel glanced at her watch. "It's getting late. Mr. Kingsley, take care." It was a clear sign for him to leave.

Sebastian was quiet for a few seconds, took a deep breath, and got out of the car. He looked back at Rachel, his voice tinged with longing, "Rachel, I'm glad you joined me for dinner tonight. I..."

Rachel cut him off before he could finish, "Thanks, Mr. Kingsley, for giving me this project. Having dinner with you was the least I could do. I won't see you off. Drive safely."

With that, Rachel drove into the Davis Manor.

Sebastian stood at the entrance, watching Rachel park the car in the garage and walk into the house before looking away.

His eyes showed a hint of frustration, but he quickly adjusted his mindset. The distance between him and Rachel had slightly decreased, which was a good sign. He couldn't rush things.

Seeing Rachel return, Amelia immediately went downstairs. Anna had fallen asleep after crying earlier, and Vincent had already gone to bed.

Rachel entered the house, rubbed her temples, looking a bit tired, and said softly to Amelia, "I'll go upstairs to take a shower first."

Amelia nodded and watched Rachel go upstairs.

After going upstairs, Rachel immediately changed out of her dress. When she finished washing up, she saw Casey still cleaning the living room and ordered in a low voice, "Go to my room and throw away the dress and shoes in the bathroom."

Casey nodded quickly. Entering Rachel's room felt like a big step; before, it was always Susan who cleaned in there, marking a shift in Rachel's trust.

Rachel watched Casey closely the entire time, so she promptly took the dress and shoes, not daring to do anything else.

She hadn't received much money, so she was determined to plant the bug in Rachel's room to overhear something more valuable next time.

However, Susan was watching too closely, and Casey never had the opportunity.
