Chapter 291 Amelia, Give Me a Chance

Selah came back because of Ruth.

She planned to see Amelia today to get some advice but clammed up when she saw Frederick there.

The Gonzalez family was pretty famous in Kasfee. When Selah got Ruth's call, she had someone dig into Ruth's background.

What she found out made her so mad she flew back overnight.

If Ruth hadn't somehow gotten Selah's contact info and called her, Selah would've had no clue Daniel was hanging out with someone like that.

Ruth had a good family background but didn't use it to build a career or expand her horizons. She just partied and went to bars every day.

Selah couldn't understand why Daniel would be into someone like that, let alone be in a relationship with Ruth!

She snapped, "If the kid's yours, I'll deal with it. If not, you better get back to Fondaniss and stay with Lucy."

Daniel looked troubled.

That evening, he knocked back a few too many and ended up blanking out, the events fading into a boozy haze. Consequently, he carried on as if nothing of note transpired, convinced there were no rough waters in his wake.

To make matters more confusing, Ruth backed up the tale of nothing going down, further solidifying his nonchalant stance. With her assurance, Daniel shrugged off any hints of a serious incident, choosing to dismiss the matter entirely.

However, the scenario took a drastic turn when Ruth dropped the bombshell of a possible pregnancy, contacting Selah for support. This revelation abruptly shattered Daniel's illusion of ignorance, abruptly thrusting him into a reality he had blissfully evaded.

He said quietly, "Whether the kid's mine or not, I don't want it. After this, I'll go back to Fondaniss with you and marry Lucy."

Seeing the depth of care Amelia showered on Frederick, Daniel felt a finality settle within him, a resignation that had been a long time coming.

Despite shouldering persistent rejections from Amelia, Daniel had clung to a sliver of hope before, a belief in a slim chance that flickered on the fringes of his consciousness.

Yet, when the bombshell dropped, courtesy of Anna's innocent revelation about Frederick and Amelia's impending union, and with no denial from Amelia herself, Daniel's illusions shattered like fragile glass. The reality hit hard—maybe his window of opportunity had closed shut long before he even realized.

For years, Daniel nursed a hope, a contingency plan, that if Amelia and Frederick's bond ever faltered, perhaps then he could step in. Now, facing her enduring affection for Frederick, Daniel grasped the profound truth—he had been fighting a losing battle all along.

Taking a moment to center himself, Daniel drew a deep breath, his gaze drifting out the window as he lapsed into a ponderous silence that hung heavy in the air. Perhaps he had mentally braced himself for this inevitable outcome, finding a strange sense of peace in the acceptance washing over him.

In the Davis Manor, a domestic scene unfolded as Amelia attended to Anna's bedtime routine, bathing her, drying her hair, and slipping her into bear pajamas before descending to the lower floor.

As Susan engrossed Anna in a bedtime story upstairs, Amelia made her way downstairs, greeted by the conspicuous absence of Daniel and Selah, eliciting a quiet sigh of relief before joining Vincent and Frederick in the living room, their animated conversation painting a cozy atmosphere.

Frederick's gaze locked on Amelia as she entered. "Are we ready to go?"

His voice was low, with a hint of reluctance, like he didn't want to leave.

Frederick, once harboring a deep aversion to the Davis Manor, now found himself engrossed in a lengthy conversation with Vincent, a stark shift that did not escape Amelia's notice, stirring a nuanced sense of irony within her.

Maintaining her composure, she acknowledged the passing time with a light nod, stealing a glance at her watch before addressing Frederick calmly, "Yeah, let's go."

Vincent rose from the comfy sofa, shooting Frederick a warm smile, "You gotta head back and treat that wound, so I won't hold you up. How about swinging by for breakfast tomorrow? The spot's just a quick ten-minute drive from the Pearl Building to here."

Frederick replied in a hushed tone, "I've been crashing at Spring Villa lately."

Vincent's expression faltered momentarily. When Amelia and Frederick split, she had wasted no time listing Spring Villa on the market. Unknown to him, Frederick had swooped in as the buyer. It appeared he, too, battled with his emotions post-divorce for the past three years.

Vincent pressed on, "Spring Villa's close by too. If you step on it, it's only a twenty-minute ride."

Yet during those days, Frederick couldn't bring himself to spare even those twenty minutes trekking to the Davis Manor.

Frederick nodded, "Yeah. I'll come over early tomorrow."

Amelia had already changed her shoes at the entrance. Seeing Vincent and Frederick still chatting, she urged, "Let's go."

Frederick then walked toward Amelia.

Vincent saw them off to the yard, watched them get into the car, and reminded them, "Amelia, drive safely."

Amelia replied, "Okay, don't worry. Go inside quickly; it's getting windy."

Vincent watched Amelia drive away from the door before turning back into the house.

On the way, Frederick was the first to break the silence in the car.

He said seriously, "Amelia, I think I'm more suitable to be Anna's father than Dylan."

His voice was low and hoarse, and his tone was serious and solemn. He clearly had thought through his words before speaking.

Amelia's expression changed slightly. She glanced at him and tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

She asked faintly, "What are you trying to say?"

Frederick's voice was a bit hoarse, and he looked at Amelia intently.

He went on, "Dylan's heart isn't with you or Anna, but mine is. If you want to give Anna a complete family, you don't need to consider Dylan. You can consider me. I promise to give Anna all the fatherly love she needs."

Amelia felt her palms sweating as she gripped the steering wheel.

Frederick must have misunderstood her conversation with Dylan this afternoon, thinking there was some emotional entanglement between them.

She raised her eyebrow slightly, "So were you sulking this afternoon out of jealousy?"

Frederick frowned slightly, "Although I don't want to admit it, that's exactly how I felt. So this is what jealousy feels like. It's not pleasant at all."

Amelia's heart was in turmoil, but she quickly calmed down. She glanced at the man beside her and said softly, "I've felt that unpleasant feeling for many years."

She looked ahead, wanting to speed up and get Frederick back to Spring Villa quickly.

But it was the evening rush hour, and the road was congested. Even if she wanted to speed up, she couldn't and had to move slowly with the traffic.

Frederick was stung by Amelia's words, and his deep blue eyes showed a hint of regret.

He took a deep breath and suppressed his frustration.

He insisted, "Amelia, I really like you and want to pursue you."

The flowers Frederick bought in the back seat emitted a fragrant scent.

Amelia felt her eyes sting and her heartache.

"It's too late." She murmured.

She had waited for many years and was already tired.

Frederick fell silent.

The road finally cleared, and Amelia sped up, heading straight for Spring Villa.

She drove into the yard of Spring Villa, opened the car door, and walked around the front of the car to open the passenger door for Frederick.

As soon as she opened the door, Frederick bent down and got out. She instinctively took a step back but almost tripped.

Frederick quickly reached out, wrapped his arm around her waist, and pulled her close, his handsome face drawing near.

"Amelia, give me a chance, please?" He whispered.
