Chapter 186 Calculations Hidden in the Eyes
They had been married for three years, but Amelia had not received any response.
When the Davis Manor had been in trouble, Frederick had proposed a divorce and sent one divorce agreement after another to Spring Villa.
He still didn’t dare imagine Amelia's state at that time.
With the triple blow of a failing marriage, a failing family, and a very sick father, Amelia must have been.
"Amelia looks delicate, but she is strong inside. She’s not the kind of person who can put down her pride and let someone else bully her." Vincent looked seriously at Frederick, his tone heavy.
Frederick felt a hint of unease in his heart as he listened to Vincent's words.
Vincent saw the anxiety in his expression.
Frederick had rarely gone back to the Davis Manor with Amelia during their three years of marriage.
During those three years, Vincent had also witnessed the grievances Amelia endured.
No father would want to see his daughter suffer.
Amelia drove to the bar, as Jesse said.
As she reached the entrance of the bar, a woman with curly hair in a tight skirt approached her.
She had a cigarette in her hand and immediately flicked off the excess ash when she saw Amelia.
"I didn't expect you to actually come," Ruth said.
She walked up to Amelia, swaying, eyeing Amelia from head to toe.
She saw the confusion in Amelia's eyes and knew that Amelia had forgotten her.
"I'm Daniel's high school classmate, Ruth Gonzalez." Ruth hid the hostility in her eyes and smiled slightly at Amelia. "Let's go. Daniel and everyone are waiting for you."
Amelia frowned slightly and asked, "Isn't Daniel drunk?"
Ruth smiled and said, "He’s not drunk. It’s just that Daniel lost a game, and everyone randomly dialed a number from his contacts to have someone come pick him up. I didn't expect you to actually come."
Amelia's eyes flashed with a hint of doubt when she heard that.
Ruth smiled faintly and quickly said, "Daniel is waiting for you inside. Let's go in."
As she spoke, she reached out to take Amelia's arm.
Amelia didn’t like this sudden familiarity and skillfully dodged.
Ruth's hand froze in mid-air.
Amelia's gaze was calm as she took out her phone to call Daniel.
When Daniel didn't answer, Amelia furrowed her brows.
Ruth saw Amelia’s reaction and said, "Daniel is probably still drinking. It's noisy inside the bar, and he can't hear the phone. Many old classmates want to see you, so if you don't show up, they probably won't let Daniel leave."
Amelia furrowed her brows and put away her phone.
Ruth walked ahead with a smile and pressed the elevator button.
Amelia followed leisurely behind.
The two of them went up together.
As soon as they stepped out of the elevator, Amelia saw Daniel coming out of the bar.
Daniel had drunk quite a bit, and his cheeks were red. When he saw Ruth and Amelia standing in the elevator, a smile immediately appeared on his face.
Jesse and the others came out of the bar too, and they teased Daniel when they saw him talking to Amelia.
In the end, Amelia and Daniel entered the bar together, unable to resist the others insisting they go in.
From their conversation, Amelia learned that Jesse was now a shareholder of this bar.
They happened to be having a class reunion today, so they had come to the bar together.
Jesse poured Amelia a glass of red wine and placed it in front of her. "Have you learned to drink after all these years?"
Daniel immediately pushed away the glass of wine in front of Amelia and smiled at Jesse. "She's still the same as before, and now she can't drink at all."
Ruth sat next to Jesse, her hand resting on Jesse's leg. Her gaze was on Amelia, smiling as she said, "You can't drink at all? Daniel, you've been protecting her too well. I heard from a junior that Amelia is already married, so shouldn't she have had a drink with the guests at her wedding?"
Amelia looked at Ruth when she heard that.
She had sensed Ruth's hostility toward her downstairs.
Now, Amelia was even more certain of her suspicions after hearing Ruth's words.
She didn't have much of an impression of Ruth.
But she remembered who Jesse was.
He had been a good friend of Daniel's in high school.
Teenage boys and girls always gathered to do rebellious things, like smoking and drinking secretly.
At that age, doing those things seemed cool.
She had grown up with Daniel, so Daniel had taken Amelia with him wherever he went.
Therefore, Amelia had drunk for the first time with Jesse and others.
She didn't know much about drinking since it was her first time, so by the time she reacted, she was already drunk and even showed symptoms of an alcohol allergy.
After that incident, Daniel never took her to such gatherings again.
Not long after, Daniel went abroad, and her meetings with Jesse became less frequent.
Ruth's smile faded slightly when she saw that Amelia didn't respond.
Ruth said, "Jesse, Amelia probably doesn't remember who you are. Amelia didn't recognize me downstairs."
Jesse tightened his grip on the glass and chuckled self-deprecatingly. "It’s normal for Amelia not to recognize us unimportant people. Bring Amelia a glass of water." As Jesse spoke, he glanced at the waiter standing beside him.
When the waiter heard that, he immediately went to fetch some water.
Soon, the waiter brought a glass of water to Amelia.
Amelia took it, thanked him politely, then placed the glass on the table.
The music in the bar was very loud, and she wasn't used to it.
Daniel was already a bit drunk. He leaned his body and listened to his classmates beside him.
Jesse got up from the sofa, walked around Daniel, and sat next to Amelia.
He smiled, leaned over, and said in Amelia's ear, "Amelia, long time no see. I’ll toast you with water instead of wine."
His sudden closeness made Amelia uncomfortable, so she immediately moved toward Daniel.
Jesse noticed her distance and didn't mind. He picked up the glass of water on the table and handed it to Amelia.
He said, "This is water, not wine. I don’t dare let you drink. The first time we drank together, I was expelled from school. The price was heavy, and I don’t dare do it anymore."
Amelia's expression flashed with surprise. "Why?"
She didn't know Jesse had been expelled from school.
In her memory, Jesse's grades were very good.
Jesse smiled bitterly and didn't continue. He just handed the water glass to Amelia.
Amelia took it. Jesse lightly touched his glass to hers, then drank the wine. Jesse saw Amelia holding the glass and looking at him with a puzzled expression, so he smiled, leaned in close to her ear, and whispered, "Back then, when you got drunk and ended up in the hospital, your sister, Rachel, found out who you were drinking with and went to the school to talk to the authorities."
The others had been on good terms with the school authorities, so they hadn’t been expelled.
But he was from an ordinary family, and had only been able to enter Kasfee High School solely based on his outstanding grades.
When Rachel approached the school, naturally, the school had to give her an explanation.
Although he had helped Amelia avoid drinking a lot that day, in the eyes of the school authorities, he had forced Amelia to drink, leading to Amelia's alcohol allergy and hospitalization.
So, since there was no one to support him, he became the scapegoat.
Amelia was surprised to learn that. She had no idea about this incident.
After Jesse finished speaking, he saw the guilt in Amelia's eyes. He smirked and leaned back.
As he sat on the sofa, he rubbed his forehead and hid the calculations in his eyes.
