Chapter 499 Shirley Returns to Kasfee
Hearing that, Orville was taken back.. He looked totally confused. "Ms. Davis, are you saying you're bailing on this project?"
Sebastian was on edge. This project was his big chance to work closely with Rachel, hoping to spark something between them again. If she ditched now, it would all go up in smoke.
"Rachel," he begged, gently grabbing her sleeve. "Don't rush into this. Didn't we already talk about it?"
Rachel calmly pulled her hand away, smiled, and turned to Orville. "I'm not bailing on the project. I'm just giving Ms. Wright a shot. She'll be in Kasfee for the long haul, so getting some hands-on experience will be good for everyone. Plus, it saves Mr. Larson and Mr. Kingsley from having to pick sides."
Nancy felt a strange unease, but she still said with a smile, "Thanks, Ms. Davis, for this opportunity." She then raised her glass to Rachel.
Rachel mirrored the gesture, her smile cool and collected. "No need to be so formal, Ms. Wright."
The clink of their glasses was sharp. Orville and Sebastian's faces were hard to read. They had both expected a showdown between Rachel and Nancy, but instead, there was this weird civility and cooperation. It threw them off.
Nancy, initially suspicious, kept an eye on Rachel's calm demeanor. It felt calculated, almost too generous for a project that was so important. Next to her, Sebastian's face tightened. Rachel had clearly made this call without looping him in, leaving him frustrated and confused.
Nancy bit her lip, trying to figure out Rachel's game. She had already upped her investment in the West Suburb Project. The rest of her money was supposed to deal with Rachel. She had to use it wisely to take down the Davis Group. Otherwise, if Rachel got the upper hand, all her efforts would be for nothing.
Throughout dinner, Rachel kept Orville entertained with lively conversation.
Orville, a guy with a deep family history of patriotism, seemed pretty impressed by Rachel's knowledge and grace.
Meanwhile, Nancy was too busy trying to decode Rachel's sudden change of heart to pay much attention to Orville's patriotic stories.
Sebastian, stewing in his frustration, stayed quiet. Rachel's unexpected move to hand over the project was driving him nuts. It felt like she was cutting him out, and he didn't like being left in the dark.
When dinner wrapped up, Rachel stood to see Orville off, exchanging polite words at the restaurant's entrance.
Sebastian and Nancy trailed behind, the tension between them thick enough to cut with a knife. Nancy tried to get his attention. "Mr. Kingsley," she called softly, reaching out.
He coldly shook her hands off, his eyes fixed on Rachel.
Nancy stared at her hand, shocked. No guy had ever treated her so rudely. She bit her lip, watching Sebastian head towards Rachel, feeling a surge of anger.
Rachel was chatting kindly with Orville before he left, his handshake lingering like he was really impressed with her.
Sebastian watched, torn between frustration and admiration. After Orville left, Sebastian turned to Rachel, his voice tinged with sadness. "Rachel, why did you give up on this project?"
Rachel met his gaze calmly, her tone steady. "I didn't give it up, Mr. Kingsley. I want to take it on alone. If it's not solely mine, I'd rather not have it."
Nancy walked up just in time to catch Rachel's words. Her expression shifted slightly, and her eyes showed a hint of mockery. So Rachel was playing the long game. She had thought Rachel was really going to give up on this project.
Nancy smiled faintly as she walked past them, her eyes showing a hint of sympathy for Sebastian.
She said, "Mr. Kingsley, I'll discuss the cooperation details with you another day."
Sebastian replied icily, "No need, I won't work with you."
Nancy raised an eyebrow slightly, not in a hurry, and said softly, "Mr. Kingsley, you may not need it now, but that doesn't mean you won't need it later. Rest assured, I won't hold you back."
With that, Nancy gave Rachel a meaningful smile and walked away.
Rachel glanced at Nancy's back, a cold glint in her eyes.
Sebastian's expression grew heavy. He searched Rachel's face for any sign she might relent. He said, "Rachel, we need to discuss this. I understand your position, but I can't hand over the entire project. What about splitting the profits differently? You get 60%, I take 40%."
Rachel gazed at him in silence for a few moments before replying, "I'll consider it."
Then she added, "You've had some drinks. Let your assistant come pick you up. I'll take a cab home."
Sebastian frowned, his eyes serious. "Rachel, you..."
Before he could continue, a clear female voice interrupted him, "Ms. Davis, I'm here to pick you up."
Shirley, stepping out of the car with a big smile, quickly opened the car door for her and hurried over.
