Chapter 469 Ms. Wright Is So Timid
Nancy's smile was all show as she addressed Amelia. "Mom feels bad about what happened, so she wanted to get closer. She wasn't trying to embarrass you, Amelia. You're reading too much into it."
Amelia just laughed, her eyes cold as ice. "I've never met anyone as shameless as you, Ms. Wright."
The folks at the table squirmed, caught between relief and anxiety. They still had business with Rachel, and backing Nancy could mess that up. The tension was thick, and calling out Amelia's jealousy seemed like the safest bet.
Nancy hadn't grown up in Kasfee and was still building her career here, so no one wanted to risk crossing Rachel.
Nancy, though rattled by Amelia's words, quickly pulled herself together. Years in the business world had toughened her up. "Mr. Hastings," she said to Frederick with a calm smile, "it seems Ms. Davis has misunderstood our relationship. She's here demanding answers."
She went on, "It's tough for women in business. Mr. Hastings, it seems your inability to manage things at home has led to Ms. Davis causing a scene here. This behavior will make it hard for any woman to work with you."
Frederick looked at Amelia, meeting her icy stare. He frowned, feeling uneasy but pushing it down. "This isn't the place for a scene. Go home."
Amelia ignored him and turned to Layla. "Aren't you the host tonight?"
Layla hesitated before answering, "No, Mr. Hastings is the host."
Amelia's voice dripped with sarcasm. "Then why did you invite me? Because you already see Mr. Hastings as your son-in-law? Does that give you the right to invite whoever you want?"
Layla was momentarily speechless. "Amelia, don't be ridiculous. There's nothing between Nancy and Mr. Hastings."
"Nothing?" Amelia shot back. "Yet you only think of Nancy when talking about a son-in-law. Funny, since I'm supposed to be your daughter too."
Layla was flustered. "Amelia, that's not fair."
"Fair?" Amelia's voice was thick with sarcasm and disdain. "Then why is Mr. Hastings here, wining and dining business partners who work with the Davis family, supposedly for my sake?"
Amelia laughed coldly, looking around the table.
These people all worked with the Davis Group and sent gifts every holiday. As Amelia's gaze swept over them, they felt like Rachel was watching, making them uneasy.
Frederick felt uncomfortable too, almost doubting if Amelia understood his intentions. If Rachel had walked in, it would all make sense. But Amelia's words carried a weight that felt disturbingly genuine. He sensed that she was on the brink of cutting all ties with him—for real, not just for show.
Nancy tried to stay calm. "Ms. Davis, are you saying that once someone works with the Davis family, they can't work with others? That's ridiculous."
"It's their choice," Amelia shot back. "But Ms. Wright, if you were confident, you wouldn't need underhanded tactics."
She then shot a quick glance at the guests and continued, "Oh, I see. You're nervous about Rachel, so you resort to sneaky moves, right? I wonder what would the business community think of your market-disrupting behaviors, offering higher-than-market prices?"
Hearing Amelia's accusation, the guests shifted uncomfortably, some slipping away quietly. Meanwhile, Nancy's frustration was evident; being compared to Rachel, her real rival, only made it worse.
Nancy wanted to say something but Frederick cut her off. "You go first, I'll handle this."
Nancy smiled slightly at Frederick's words, giving Amelia a provocative look. "Alright. Then I'll leave it to you, Mr. Hastings."
Frederick didn't respond, his deep blue eyes fixed on Amelia, filled with frustration and other emotions.
Amelia sat quietly, unfazed by Frederick's gaze. She smiled at Nancy. "Ms. Wright, leaving already? Rachel's on her way. Are you scared to face her?"
Nancy's expression stiffened. If she left now, it would be like admitting defeat, and the tricky business partners would definitely reconsider their alliances. If she stayed, she'd have to face Rachel, and honestly, she wasn't ready for that.
Amelia chuckled mockingly, looking at the business partners. "Ms. Wright is so timid, and you dare to backstab Rachel with her?" She had already informed Rachel, and before Rachel arrived, she wouldn't let Nancy leave. So, even if it meant being unreasonable, she had to keep her here.
