Chapter 21 Give Him Three Months
Amelia looked at the phone that was lying next to her, then picked it up and put it in her bag.
She was no more eager to take Kenneth's calls than Frederick was.
But...
She didn't expect Frederick to suddenly come to her aid.
"Alright."
Amelia's reply was crisp. Frederick studied her with a probing look and smiled to himself, thinking, "Now that she’s benefitted, she’s suddenly become very obedient."
Shifting his gaze away from her, a cold voice emitted from him.
"Grandmother has caught a cold after being discharged from the hospital. She wants us to stay at Hastings Manor with her for a while."
Amelia froze for a moment, about to speak, when Frederick added, "Amelia, Grandmother has always been good to you."
Amelia pursed her lips, knowing full well what he meant by that. She turned to look out of the window.
"Don't worry, I'll wait until Grandmother is feeling better before I talk to her about the divorce."
Frederick spoke without emotion.
The ride back was silent.
When they arrived at Hastings Manor, Amelia was the first to open the car door and step out.
Once outside the car, she immediately turned to Felix.
"Felix, thank you for taking care of Rachel’s matter."
As Frederick leaned over to get out of the car, he overheard her polite tone and frowned in displeasure.
Felix noticed the discontent in Frederick's eyes, gave an awkward smile, and quickly said, "It's no trouble at all. I'm just following Mr. Hastings' orders."
He certainly didn't dare to take credit for Frederick's actions.
Amelia looked up at Frederick, about to thank him, but he approached, naturally wrapping an arm around her waist.
"Let's go inside."
As Frederick spoke, he pulled her close into his embrace.
Her waist was so slender it seemed he could almost break it with a little pressure.
Frederick frowned slightly and said, "Starting today, you're eating on time to avoid people thinking the Hastings family mistreated you by not feeding you after our divorce."
Amelia was speechless.
Together, they entered Hastings Manor.
Tom Johnson, the butler, noticed Amelia and Frederick returning together and approached them with a beaming smile.
"Mrs. Brittany has been talking about you two for quite some time, eagerly awaiting your return."
Amelia smiled softly and stepped into the living room.
Brittany was sitting in an armchair and got up when she saw Amelia and Frederick enter. However, she seemed to remember something and lay back down.
"Amelia, you're back?" she called out.
Amelia nodded gently and sat down next to Brittany.
Brittany immediately reached for Amelia's hand. "I've been feeling unwell lately, so I wanted you and Frederick to temporarily move over here to Hastings Manor to keep me company. Once I'm a bit better, you and Frederick can return to Spring Villa."
Brittany said this and then suddenly coughed several times.
Amelia quickly patted her back. It took a while before the coughing stopped.
Seeing Brittany's state didn't seem feigned. Uncertainty flickered in Amelia's eyes.
Noticing Amelia's hesitation, Brittany looked at her with anticipation and softly added, "Is that okay?"
Amelia lifted her gaze towards the man sitting on the sofa across the room.
Frederick was seated near the edge of the bed. The lingering glow of the setting sun bathed him in a golden hue as if he were gilded by the light.
He looked relaxed and indifferent as though all this barely concerned him.
Under Brittany's earnest gaze, Amelia eventually nodded.
"Alright."
Brittany was very pleased with her response, her spirits seemingly lifted.
Frederick casually took a book from a nearby shelf and began to read.
They hadn't joined Brittany for dinner in quite some time. After supper, Brittany's mood had improved considerably, and she chatted with Amelia.
Frederick, on the other hand, sat apart, listening to their conversation.
"Did I hear that your father woke up?" Brittany asked.
"I haven't visited him since he fell ill. As soon as I feel a bit better, I'll go see him."
Brittany had hardly finished speaking before she turned to scold Frederick.
"Frederick, did you visit Vincent?"
He leaned back on the sofa and responded, "I've visited Vincent. I even had a meal with him at the hospital."
Brittany looked at Amelia for confirmation.
She nodded lightly.
After a while, Frederick's phone rang.
Amelia almost immediately looked up and fixed her gaze on Frederick.
Usually, at this time, Frederick would have already been at the hospital with Amber.
Since he hadn't gone over yet tonight, Amber would naturally call to ask about his whereabouts.
Frederick, feeling Amelia's eyes on him, picked up his cellphone, glanced at it, and said, "It's a call from work."
After speaking, he rose from the couch and walked over to the balcony to take the call.
Amelia paused for a moment as she listened to Frederick's explanation.
Brittany held her hand tightly and hurriedly said, "Amelia, I know you want to divorce Frederick.
"Please, for my sake, give Frederick a chance, will you? Just three months. If, after three months, Frederick is still entangled with that woman, then you can think about divorce. Okay?"
Amelia looked up at the man on the balcony, who had just lit a cigarette between his fingers, his expression looking detached.
During the conversation, Frederick turned his head, and his eyes met Amelia's stare. He paused, and almost immediately, he tossed away the cigarette he was holding.
After all, Amelia had always disliked the smell of cigarettes.
Seeing her glance at Frederick, Brittany also looked his way and then glared at Frederick fiercely.
Hesitant, Amelia finally replied, "Grandma, three months then."
Brittany’s face lit up with excitement as she held Amelia's hand tightly. "Good," she said.
He finished his phone conversation and then came back to the living room.
Brittany's mood had clearly improved from before.
Frederick raised an eyebrow as he looked at Amelia.
Her face held a tender smile. Throughout her conversation with Brittany, she was almost always smiling.
Frederick couldn’t help but watch her a bit longer.
The two women sat together, seemingly with endless topics to chat about.
After Frederick went upstairs to freshen up, he returned to the bedroom and saw that Amelia had not come up yet, so he went to look for her.
He saw Brittany sharing amusing stories of her youth with Amelia, and Amelia was laughing brightly.
Frederick leaned on the banister with one hand and watched for a while.
A passing maid, Julie, noticed Frederick looking downstairs and asked softly, "Mr. Hastings, what are you looking at?"
Frederick withdrew his gaze, his expression neutral. "The plants inside, they can be changed."
With that, he turned and walked back to the bedroom.
The gardener had just come yesterday to change out all the plants. were they going to be changed again?
Julie looked puzzled as she followed Frederick's gaze from moments before and saw Amelia's bright and radiant smile, pausing in surprise. From this angle, it was clear Frederick couldn't see the potted plant at all. Obviously, he was sneaking looks at Amelia!
