Chapter 185 Not to the Point of Non-essential

After Amelia washed her hands, she walked over to sit across from Frederick.

When she saw that Daniel's seat was still empty, she asked, "Where is Daniel?"

Susan quickly replied, "I've called Mr. Vanderbilt. He's out having dinner with friends today."

Amelia nodded, softly said "OK," and didn't ask any further.

Frederick's warm gaze fell on Amelia.

Vincent sensed a subtle atmosphere between them and pushed the okra toward Frederick.

He said, "Frederick, have some more okra. It's good for your stomach."

Frederick nodded. Since Vincent was pushing all the dishes to him, he picked up his fork and took a bite of the okra.

The okra’s sticky threads stuck to the fork.

Frederick's expression immediately turned sour, and he felt himself losing his appetite.

But since Vincent was watching him, he put the okra into his mouth.

Amelia raised her eyes when she saw Frederick putting the okra into his mouth. He chewed a bit and swallowed.

"Tastes good," he said insincerely.

Amelia couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

Frederick didn't like okra.

He never had.

When they had first been married, Amelia knew he had many business dinners, so she would ask Mary to prepare some healthy green vegetables for him.

But his resistant expression had been particularly obvious whenever there was okra.

So Amelia noted that he didn't like okra.

Amelia strangely felt a bit of pleasure when she saw Frederick reluctantly swallow the okra.

When they had just gotten married, she had accommodated him in every way, wanting to show him her heart.

But he had repeatedly emotionally abused her.

No response, no rejection.

"I’m glad you like it." Vincent didn't notice Frederick's subtle change in expression and smiled contentedly.

Frederick just smiled lightly in response.

Okra would help Frederick's stomach problems.

So Amelia put some okra in Frederick's bowl and said, "Enjoy some more if you like."

She enjoyed seeing Frederick struggle to swallow the okra.

Frederick looked at Amelia, slightly stunned.

Amelia smiled sweetly at him. "Don't you like it?"

Frederick shook his head, smiled, and slowly chewed the okra in his bowl.

Amelia watched him eat without a wrinkle on his brow, her eyebrows slightly raised.

Had she been mistaken?

So she took some okra for him again.

Frederick continued to enjoy his meal, savoring each bite.

Amelia pursed her lips, glanced at him quietly, and didn't pour him any more water.

After dinner, the plate of okra was almost empty. Frederick had eaten most of it.

Vincent smiled at Frederick and said, "I grew this okra myself in the backyard. Frederick, if you like it, I'll pick some for you to take home later."

Frederick immediately replied, "The Pearl Building doesn't have a chef. And the food made by other chefs doesn’t taste very good."

Vincent said, "If you want okra, you should come to the Davis Manor."

After all, it was Vincent's homegrown produce, and he was worried it would go to waste.

"Okay," Frederick agreed readily.

Vincent smiled faintly and said, "You can come to the Davis Manor for dinner every day, so you won't risk eating bad food outside. The food at home is healthier."

"Thank you, Vincent," Frederick replied.

"We're family. No need to be polite." Vincent smiled.

Frederick smiled lightly and couldn't help but look at Amelia.

Amelia remained calm. She sensed Frederick's intention to come to the Davis Manor for meals, so she asked, "When did you start liking okra so much?"

"Just now," his voice was deep, and his gaze fixed on Amelia as he spoke.

Amelia glanced at him calmly, showing no emotion on the surface. She felt less resistant to the idea of him coming to the Davis Manor for meals.

If he ate well, it would benefit his health.

Amelia remained composed. As she put down her fork, her phone rang.

She picked it up and saw it was a call from Daniel.

She answered casually. "Daniel."

But the voice on the phone was not Daniel's.

"Amelia, this is Jesse. Daniel is drunk. Can you come pick him up? We've all been drinking, so we can't drive him."

Jesse?

Amelia found the name familiar but couldn't recall his face immediately.

Since there was no response from Amelia, Jesse added, "Daniel's really drunk and keeps asking for you, so I used his phone to call you."

"Where are you guys? I'll come over right away," Amelia said.

After getting the address from Jesse, Amelia hung up.

When Amelia answered the phone, Frederick's gaze had been fixed on her without wavering.

As soon as she hung up, she stood up immediately.

Frederick's heart skipped a beat.

Vincent said, "Are you going to see Daniel?"

"Daniel is drunk. I'm going to pick him up." Amelia nodded, walking out of the dining room as she answered.

Frederick's hand tightened slightly as he held the fork. The veins on the back of his hand bulged, and his face showed restraint.

He put down the fork, stood up, and said, "I'm leaving too. I'll drive you."

No one in the living room responded.

Frederick paused for a moment, then walked out of the dining room. Amelia was nowhere to be seen in the living room.

He looked out the French windows into the yard.

Amelia was walking quickly, looking anxious, as if she was worried Daniel would be harmed if she was late.

Frederick watched her back, feeling uncomfortable.

Anna was still sitting in the dining chair and looked at Frederick with concern, as if she could sense his current mood.

Anna said with a soft voice, "Uncle Frederick."

Frederick immediately adjusted his mood and turned back into the dining room.

"I'm fine," Frederick said.

Vincent quietly watched Frederick and softly said, "It doesn't look like everything's fine."

Frederick fell silent.

Vincent sighed softly and said, "I remember Amelia used to love a dress I brought back from abroad for her. She wanted to wear it every day. Later, my niece saw it and liked it too, so I bought one for her. But gradually, Amelia's enthusiasm for that dress faded, and I never saw her wear it again."

Frederick remained silent.

He knew why Vincent was telling him that story.

He was now like the dress Amelia once loved.

She had liked him, but not so much that she liked only him.
