Chapter 27 Your Sister Can Handle It
Kenneth’s voice preceded his entrance, causing Amelia to frown involuntarily.
Kenneth was as bothersome to Amelia as Scott.
How could she let Rachel marry someone like him?
A flash of concern crossed Amelia’s eyes, worried that Dominick might try to play matchmaker between them. Her gaze immediately settled on Sebastian, next to Dominick.
Sebastian was the only man Amelia knew who had previously dated Rachel.
Frederick caught the direction of her gaze and, reaching out, gently pinched her waist, drawing her closer to him. His deep eyes flickered with displeasure.
Amelia turned her attention back to Frederick, puzzled.
Frederick just silently gave her a look, his eyes carrying a hint of warning.
Dominick noticed Frederick's movements and smiled knowingly. It was Frederick's first time bringing his wife over, so naturally, Dominick's attention was more on Amelia.
His impression of Amelia was still that of the young girl who had been well-protected by Rachel and Vincent years ago. When Amelia caught Dominick's gaze on them, she felt uneasy and nudged Frederick with her hand.
Frederick just smiled and didn't let go of her hand.
When Kenneth walked straight over and caught Frederick's gaze with a hint of hostility, he remembered he hadn't offended Frederick. With a regained smile on his face, Kenneth casually sat next to Rachel.
"Ms. Rachel Davis, we meet again," he said.
Rachel responded with a faint nod, a subtle way of acknowledging his presence.
The sofa they were sitting on was crowded with four people. Rachel subtly shifted closer to Amelia.
Amelia, consequently, had no choice but to move closer to Frederick. She was enveloped by Frederick's arms and felt like if she leaned in any more, she would practically be in his lap. Yet, the small gap between Kenneth and Rachel was the only space available.
In the end, Rachel stood up smoothly and sat down beside Sebastian, maintaining her composure. Sebastian appeared indifferent, not sparing Rachel any unnecessary glances.
Kenneth, seeing Rachel keeping her distance, didn't seem annoyed and maintained his smile.
"Mr. Montgomery, are you trying to set Ms. Rachel Davis up with a boyfriend? Do you think I qualify to be Ms. Rachel Davis's boyfriend?" he joked.
Dominick kept on his charitable smile. He glanced between Kenneth and Rachel and noticed Rachel's eyes carried a hint of detachment. He laughed lightly.
"You're a talented young man. Of course, you are qualified. Rachel is exceptional, and it's natural for her to have admirers. I'm old now, and you young people cherish your freedom in love, so I won't interfere," Dominick said with evident courtesy.
It was clear Dominick didn't genuinely want to matchmake them. Given Kenneth's reputation as a notorious playboy in Kasfee, and Rachel's status as the successor to the Davis family with impeccable integrity, it was obvious Dominick wouldn't jeopardize Rachel's well-being.
Amelia caught a glimpse of Sebastian sitting next to Dominick, his expression unmoved. She silently took a deep breath and cautiously stole a glance at Rachel, who seemed unperturbed.
"Mr. Montgomery, you're still young at heart, not old at all," someone chimed in to lighten the mood.
As the casual chat progressed, dinner was ready in the kitchen.
Dominick invited everyone to the dining room to take their seats.
In Dominick's presence, Frederick seemed to be particularly attentive to Amelia, to the point that she felt somewhat uncomfortable.
Kenneth, seated next to Rachel, wore a smile and broached the subject of land ownership with enthusiasm.
Before Dominick, however, Kenneth didn't dare to be too arrogant.
Out of respect for Frederick, Dominick agreed to play the mediator.
Sebastian had been relatively quiet since Rachel's arrival at the Montgomery Manor.
Back then, his demeanor was gentle, but now there was a profound depth to his expression that was hard to read.
Amelia couldn't help but cast extra glances at Sebastian.
After all, back when Sebastian was in love with Rachel, he was willing to give her everything. Now that he seemed so indifferent, Amelia found it hard to believe.
Frederick served Amelia some dishes with a sharp look. Her frequent gazes towards Sebastian were grating on his nerves.
Amelia quickly shifted her gaze and pursed her lips.
After the gathering ended, Dominick called Rachel, Kenneth, and Sebastian into the study for a talk.
Meanwhile, Frederick and Amelia waited in the living room, tense with anticipation.
As they entered the study, Amelia nervously watched Rachel. Rachel gave Amelia a reassuring look before stepping inside.
Half an hour later, Sebastian was the first to emerge from the study, his complexion grim. then he grabbed his jacket from the sofa and left without a word.
Frederick raised an eyebrow at Sebastian's departure.
Amelia frowned. A few minutes passed before Kenneth and Rachel exited the study, Kenneth still smiling.
Rachel's expression was neutral, revealing little of her emotions.
Dominick followed them out of the study with a benevolent smile, turning his attention to Frederick and Amelia.
"I'm off to rest. You all should head back and get some sleep, too."
"Frederick, do bring Amelia over more often," he added.
Upon hearing this, Frederick nodded.
The group emerged from Montgomery Manor. Frederick walked Amelia over to the car, opening the passenger door for her to get in. But Amelia's gaze remained fixed on the direction where Rachel and Kenneth were.
Kenneth, despite Dominick's persuasion to let go of that piece of land in the western suburbs, kept using it as an excuse to pester Rachel for a chance. He claimed that the property in the western suburbs was his ticket to pursue Rachel. "Ms. Rachel Davis can handle it," he insisted.
Frederick blocked Amelia's view, signaling her to get into the car. She redirected her focus, bent down, and slid into the seat. He closed the door, then walked around the hood to the driver's side.
Their proximity was closer than usual. Amelia, who normally sat in the back, felt slightly uneasy sitting in the front seat. Frederick drove back to the Hastings Manor.
As the car pulled into the garage, Amelia hesitated, then pursed her lips. For three years, Frederick had been reluctant to stay at the Hastings Manor. Even with Brittany's earnest attempts to keep him, he would inevitably leave after Brittany had rested.
This time, however, Brittany had requested they stay over at the Hastings Manor with her, and Amelia was surprised at Frederick's compliance. She remained silent, turning her gaze towards the man beside her.
After the car was turned off, Frederick unbuckled his seat belt. Seeing her looking at him, he reached over and pressed the buckle of Amelia's seat belt. Once it was released, Frederick glanced at her indifferently. Seeing that she showed no intention of leaving the car, he said coldly, "If you don't want to stay here, go and talk to Grandma."
Amelia was speechless. This was probably his true character. The tender and considerate care he had shown her in Dominick's presence was just for show. Men of their status often liked to present a harmonious family image when out in public. Ironically, it was his masterful performance that had stirred something in Amelia.
