Chapter 35 You Must Go

Madison got into Amelia's car, took the seat beside her, and gave Amelia a sharp look. Yet Amelia appeared unfazed as if the recent events hadn't affected her mood at all. Madison was deep in thought.

"Aren't you worried about Frederick at all, Ms. Davis?" she asked.

A look of confusion crossed Amelia's face. Amelia's concern would be for Brittany, given Brittany's frail health and tendency to get upset easily.

Seeing Amelia's confusion, Madison sighed deeply. "Frederick got a talking-to from his grandmother because of you. Don't you feel sorry for him? What kind of wife acts like this? A good wife should be able to ease family tensions, not exacerbate them."

Amelia raised sternly an eyebrow. "Is Ms. Blair referring to the matter of Frederick's performance or the incident with Ms. Roberts just now?"

Madison frowned.

Amelia smiled, continuing, "The matter of Frederick's performance—wasn't it you who brought it up first, Ms. Blair? Why does it seem like you're blaming me now? What did I do wrong in this situation? I would appreciate it if Ms. Blair could clarify."

Madison hadn't expected the usually compliant Amelia to speak so sharply today. She took a deep breath, unable to mask the disdain in her eyes and, for a moment, at a loss for words to counter Amelia.

The smile on Amelia's face slightly dimmed as she looked out the window. The rest of the drive back to Hastings Manor was silent, with Madison not uttering another word.

After arriving at Hastings Manor, Madison headed straight for Frederick as soon as she got out of the car. "Frederick, I should go back. It seems like Ms. Davis doesn't like me much."

Frederick's expression was sour from the earful Brittany had given him during the ride, and he frowned after hearing Madison's words. He stared at Amelia, but his face betrayed no emotion.

Brittany watched Madison with a stern gaze. "What are you talking about? Amelia is the kindest and most gentle soul. If she doesn't like you, then it must be for a reason."

Caught off guard by Brittany's words, Madison's face flushed with embarrassment.

"Brittany! You."
Brittany cut Madison off before she could finish, waving her hand dismissively and glanced at the driver, saying, "Take her home. It'll be nice to have some peace and quiet."

Hearing this, the driver nodded and gestured politely to Madison to go ahead.

Madison paused for a moment, clenching her teeth, shot Amelia a cold look, and then turned around to leave.

Amelia remained composed, standing quietly to the side, not offering any defense for herself, nor showing any signs of dissatisfaction with Madison's comments.

After Madison had left, Brittany immediately walked over to Amelia and grasped her hand.

"Amelia, Madison has always been like this, always nitpicking and meddling in everything. Don't take her words to heart," Brittany consoled.

Amelia nodded in agreement.

"Grandma, don't worry. For your sake, I won't make a fuss about it," Amelia assured her.

Brittany relaxed upon hearing Amelia's response. For years, Madison had been intent on introducing her husband's niece to Frederick as a potential wife, but Brittany had chosen Amelia instead. As a result, Madison had harbored a grudge against Amelia all these years.

Now, after three years of marriage to Frederick, Amelia had not become pregnant, and naturally, Madison seized the opportunity to stir up trouble. She did not anticipate, however, that the reason for their lack of children was actually Frederick.

As Amelia was talking with Brittany, her phone suddenly rang. It was a call from the relative of a patient at the hospital. At the sight of the incoming call, Amelia's expression changed slightly, and she excused herself to answer the phone.

The patient she was responsible for was in critical condition and undergoing emergency care.

Ever since the hospital had found out about Amelia's connection with Brittany, they seldom disturbed her on her days off.

Gripped by urgency and having great trust in Amelia, the patient's relative had reached out to her directly.

After speaking with the family member, Amelia became worried about her patient.

Brittany understood completely. "You should go to the hospital now. Just remember to meet us at the restaurant later for dinner," she said supportively.

Amelia nodded gently. As she was about to leave, she caught Frederick's eye.

The dinner party that evening would inevitably reveal the true nature of her and Frederick's relationship, and Amelia wondered how Frederick would handle it.

While she pondered this, Frederick looked at her and said in a deep voice, "I'll take you there."

After speaking, Frederick got into the driver's seat of the car.

"Go ahead," Brittany beckoned Amelia to get into the car.

During the exchange, Brittany had already opened the passenger side door for her.

Amelia nodded and stepped into the vehicle.
Amelia had assumed that Frederick would discuss the plans for the evening's dinner with her during the drive. After all, he had been going to great lengths to keep their relationship a secret. Yet, what Amelia hadn't anticipated was Frederick's total silence throughout the journey, showing no intention of having that conversation.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Amelia stepped out of the car without asking any questions. She went straight to the department, where a patient's family member immediately took her hand, tearfully explaining the patient's condition. Amelia soothed the patient’s family. She stayed at the hospital until the patient was out of surgery, consulted with the doctor in charge to confirm the patient's status, and reassured the family before departing.

No sooner had Amelia walked out of the hospital than she received a call from Hastings Manor. Tom's voice was slightly heavy as he spoke.

"Mrs. Hastings, Mrs. Brittany may not be able to make it tonight. It seems she caught a chill up in the mountains earlier, and she's feeling under the weather. We'll be counting on you to host this evening's gathering."

Amelia frowned at the news, "Is Grandma's condition serious? If it is, I can head back right now. Frederick can handle the gathering."

Amelia had never met Emily's students before, who were also Amber's classmates, so if she didn't attend, Frederick would probably feel more at ease interacting with them.

Hearing this, Tom hastily replied, "Mrs. Brittany isn't too ill. It's essential that you be there tonight, or else she might insist on coming despite her sickness."

Amelia took a deep, silent breath.

"Alright, I understand."

Once Tom received Amelia's response, he ended the call with relief. Amelia put away her phone, and when she looked up, she saw a familiar car pull up in front of her and stop. Felix quickly got out and opened the rear car door for her.

"Mrs. Hastings, Mr. Hastings went to the office and is caught up in a meeting, so he sent me to pick you up," Felix informed her.

Amelia, maintaining her composure, nodded and gracefully got into the car.

"Let's go directly to the restaurant," she instructed.

Felix closed the door for Amelia, returned to the driver's seat, and started the car. On the way to the restaurant, Amelia's thoughts were a jumble. She was growing a headache at the thought of the impending ordeal.
