Chapter 358 Hoping to Avoid Estrangement
Amelia sat down in her office chair, her gaze coldly fixed on Scott.
Scott didn't mind Amelia's attitude at all. He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down with a smile on his face. "Where should we start the check-up?"
Amelia looked away indifferently, staring at her computer screen. She glanced at the list of patients registered for the day and spoke coldly. "Make an appointment first, then wait in line."
Seeing her serious expression, Scott leaned back slightly in his chair. He grumbled, "We've known each other for so many years. Can't I cut in line?"
Amelia replied coldly, "No."
Her response was so crisp and decisive that Scott couldn't help but sigh. He stared at her for a few seconds, then reluctantly got up from his chair. "Alright, I'll make an appointment."
Amelia didn't respond.
Scott stared at her, his eyes narrowing slightly, but eventually, he stepped out of her office.
Amelia didn't lift her head. Looking at the registration list on her computer, she began calling out names in order.
A few minutes later, Scott's name appeared on the computer screen, at the very bottom, scheduled for 4 PM.
Amelia glanced at his name, then looked away and started attending to the patients.
Scott walked back in from outside. When she saw his figure, Amelia's eyes turned colder. She snapped, "Wait outside!"
The patient sitting opposite Amelia was startled by her sharp tone. He hadn't expected the gentle doctor who had just been sitting across from them to have such a fierce side.
Amelia's scolding tone took aback Scott, who smiled helplessly and sat down by the door to wait.
Watching Scott leave, Amelia gave an apologetic smile to the patient sitting across from her and continued the consultation.
After the patient left Amelia's office, the name of another patient appeared on the display screen at the door.
Amelia lowered her head to organize the previous patient's information and began to ask. "What's wrong..."
Before she could finish her sentence, she saw out of the corner of her eye that Scott had walked in.
Amelia frowned and looked at the patient's name. She asked, "Are you Angelina Ramirez?"
Scott sat down opposite Amelia, smiling. "I switched places with this patient. Is that not allowed?"
Amelia frowned, glanced at the assistant who had just entered, and said calmly. "Bring Ms. Ramirez in. I'll see her first."
The assistant nodded and brought Angelina in from the door.
Although Angelina looked very worn, she still had a smile on her face. "Dr. Davis, let this gentleman go first. It's okay, I can wait."
Scott, hearing Angelina's words, sat comfortably in the chair opposite Amelia.
Amelia frowned, looked seriously at Angelina, and said sternly. "Take a look at yourself and then look at him. Who do you think can wait longer? His appointment is scheduled for four o'clock. Do you really think you can hold off until then?"
Scott was clad in a casual gray tracksuit, his complexion giving off an impression of health, completely the opposite of Angelina, who looked pale and pained.
She smiled awkwardly and quickly said, "It's okay. I can go to another hospital to register."
Amelia frowned and looked at Scott. "Get up and leave."
Scott sat in the chair, refusing to move. He insisted, "Amelia, I'm a patient too."
Amelia frowned and replied coldly, "We don't allow cutting in line here."
Scott chuckled, disbelief in his voice. "You're just targeting me, aren't you?"
Amelia's face was cold. "Scott, if you don't want me to dislike you even more, you'd better not waste my time."
Scott listened to Amelia's words, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. "If I get up and leave now, will you stop disliking me?"
Amelia didn't answer.
Scott quietly looked at her for a while, then finally got up from the chair. Before leaving, he held out his hand to Angelina.
Angelina's expression was somewhat resentful, but she eventually took the money out of her pocket and handed it back to Scott.
No sooner had he stepped outside than the assistant promptly closed the door behind him.
Sitting across from Amelia, Angelina carried a tinge of indignation, as if Amelia had just snatched away her chance for a fortune.
"Where are you feeling unwell?" Amelia asked, her voice betraying a touch of professional impatience.
Angelina's response dripped with bitterness. "I feel unwell in my heart."
Amelia looked up, meeting her eyes. "How so?"
"The money I was about to get is gone, Dr. Davis. Would you feel good?" Angelina shot back, her frustration palpable.
Amelia's expression shifted slightly as she grasped the real issue; Angelina wasn’t here because of any true medical concern—she was upset about missing out on Scott's money. Yet, despite her obvious irritation, there was something undeniably off about Angelina's appearance. Her face was pale, and her discomfort seemed genuine.
Amelia observed that Angelina seemed to be experiencing abdominal discomfort and moved closer to examine her. Gently, she pressed on Angelina's abdomen.
Amelia continued her examination methodically despite Angelina's protests. Just before Angelina's anger boiled over, Amelia turned to her assistant, issuing clear and concise orders.
"Preliminary diagnosis is acute appendicitis. Take her for an examination. If it's confirmed, arrange for surgery immediately."
She then removed her gloves with the calm demeanor of someone who’s seen it all. Turning back to Angelina, she spoke in a measured, serious tone. "Acute appendicitis can be fatal. If you don't get treated in time, is a few thousand dollars worth your life?"
Angelina's face went even paler, fear creeping into her eyes as the gravity of her condition sank in. Quickly, she began explaining her symptoms and the nature of her pain in detail, realizing the seriousness of her situation.
With the symptoms recorded, Amelia nodded to her assistant, who guided Angelina to the examination room. As they left, Amelia quietly whispered final instructions to her assistant. The assistant acknowledged with a nod and led Angelina away.
There were many patients in the emergency department, and quite a few had registered just in the morning. Amelia was busy until lunchtime. After seeing off the last patient before lunch, she got up and stretched.
Nicole had completed Jesse's discharge procedures and first went to the inpatient department to look for Amelia. However, she couldn't find her, so she went to the outpatient department. She grinned, "Amelia, how about having lunch together today?"
Seeing Nicole's head poking out from outside her office, Amelia smiled and agreed. "Sure."
Nicole smiled at Amelia's response.
Amelia got up and saw Jesse as she walked to the door.
After the awkward incident on the yacht, coupled with Ruth's close friendship with him, she felt hesitant about sharing a meal with them. But she had already agreed to Nicole, and backing out now would be rude.
Jesse noticed Amelia's expression change slightly upon seeing him and smiled apologetically. "Ms. Davis, I'm very sorry about what happened on the yacht. It was my oversight that led to such a mistake. Nicole was also a victim. I hope this incident doesn't create a rift between you and Nicole."
