Chapter 51 He was Abandoned
"Do you want to come take a look?" Felix asked Amelia for her opinion.
Amelia shook her head slightly, "No, thanks."
Frederick had never really liked her stepping into his social circle. Hence, in their three years of marriage, Frederick never brought her around his friends. Now that she and Frederick had agreed to divorce, she had no status and no need to intrude on them.
Felix nodded awkwardly, "Alright, I'll go in first."
Amelia hummed in response and headed toward her own office. Felix saw that her mood didn't fluctuate much and couldn't help but sigh. Amelia seemed much gentler than her sister, Rachel. But if Rachel was cold outside and warm inside, Amelia was warm outside but cold inside. Beneath her gentle exterior, she hid an indifferent heart.
Amelia assisted a colleague with a few patient issues in the office until it was time to clock out. Just as she stepped out of the hospital, an unfamiliar man stopped her in her tracks.
"Ms. Davis?"
The man wore sunglasses and stood in Amelia's path. She instantly took a step back to maintain a safe distance.
"Who are you?"
To her surprise, as she stepped back, he stepped forward, closing the gap. He had an impudent smile on his face and thought himself handsome as he took off his sunglasses. Amelia paused, not recognizing the man in front of her.
Seeing the blank look in Amelia's eyes, Baxter Murphy raised an eyebrow and leaned in closer.
"Ms. Davis, I'm Baxter Murphy."
At the mention of the name, it rang a bell for Amelia. This was one of the many real estate developers she had met at a gathering organized by Daniel for the sale of land during a crisis at Davis Group.
"Hello."
Amelia smiled politely and, after exchanging greetings, tried to step aside to leave. But Baxter stepped back in sync with her as she moved.
"Ms. Davis, are you here for a check-up?"
Frowning, Amelia replied patiently, "No, I work here."
Her voice was calm, her gaze containing a hint of distance. Despite this, since Baxter was an investor and Davis Group was just beginning to recover, Amelia did not want to offend him.
Baxter, intrigued by Amelia's response, immediately showed more interest.
"I didn't expect Ms. Davis to be a doctor," Baxter remarked a hint of surprise in his voice.
"I've been feeling kind of off recently. Maybe Ms. Davis could check me out?" he suggested, reaching for Amelia's hand and pressing it against his chest, where he felt a constant pain. It disrupted his sleep night after night.
He had been smitten with Amelia since the last party they both attended. However, Baxter had been swamped with work after taking over his father's position and had found no opportunity to approach her. Today, he finally had the chance and he wasn't going to let it slip away easily.
Amelia swiftly retracted her hand, her gaze a mix of alertness and distaste. "Mr. Murphy, if you're genuinely feeling unwell, you should make an appointment for a check-up. I'm off duty right now, I'm sorry."
As she spoke, she hastened her pace, attempting to leave. Baxter chuckled and quickly reached out, grabbing Amelia's wrist. "Ms. Davis, I was just kidding. Where do you live? Let me give you a ride home."
Amelia's face was stern as she tried to wrench her hand free, but he gripped her with surprising strength. "Let go!" she frowned.
Baxter's hold remained firm. "Ms. Davis, give me a chance to make amends. I'm not a bad guy. What are you afraid of?"
With an icy demeanor, Amelia warned, "If you don't let go, I’m going to call security."
Baxter raised an eyebrow, unfazed. As the sole heir to the Murphy family, he had always been arrogant and entitled. Now, with the decline of the Davis Group, the Murphys were one of the top five powers in Kasfee. He felt completely justified in using this advantage over the Davis family, especially since they had recently become the sort that anyone could trample over.
Amelia mustered all her strength to break free from Baxter's grip. Her sudden movement caused her to stumble backward several steps, colliding with a solid chest behind her.
Startled, she turned to see Frederick standing there. She bit her lip lightly, her eyes pleading for help. She had never encountered someone as brazen as Baxter before.
Frederick, looking down at her, seemed to soften when she bumped into him. He removed his hands from his pockets, placing one on Amelia's shoulder and directing a firm look at Baxter. Baxter paused, noting Frederick's possessive demeanor.
"So Mr. Hastings has taken a liking to Ms. Davis," Baxter observed. After a brief contemplation, he shrugged indifferently. "In that case, I'll leave her to you."
The Murphy family might have only been able to squeeze into the top five in Kasfee, but the Hastings family was solidly in first place. Furthermore, the Hastings family was financially formidable, with assets twice as much as those of the Kingsley family, who ranked third.
Both the Sinclair family and the Kingsley family were on good terms with the Hastings. Naturally, Baxter wouldn't dare compete with Frederick for a woman's attention.
Frederick's eyes were sharp, his voice low and cold.
"Let?"
"You need me to step aside for you?"
Baxter instantly knew he'd misspoken and hastily apologized.
"Sorry, Mr. Hastings, that was my mistake."
"I..."
Frederick gave him an icy stare, his lip curling in disdain at Baxter's slick demeanor.
"Get out."
Relieved, Baxter quickly made his exit, not daring to linger any longer.
Amelia quietly breathed a sigh of relief, noting that Frederick still had his hand on her shoulder. She pursed her lips, took a couple of steps forward, and his hand naturally fell away.
"Thank you, Mr. Hastings."
Her voice was soft, barely audible.
Frederick watched her demure expression, his fingers pausing as if he could still feel the warmth of her body on his palm. His gaze fixed on her face, his expression inscrutable.
"No need to thank me."
He responded in a flat tone, resuming his impassive facade.
Amelia bit her lip and turned to leave.
Frederick watched her until she got into her car, and then he finally averted his gaze.
Felix whispered from the side.
"Mr. Kingsley is hosting a party tonight. Would you like to attend?"
Frederick nodded.
"Let's go."
Felix nodded as well and immediately sent a confirmation to Sebastian.
In the bar, Scott notices Frederick drinking alone and nudges the woman beside him, suggesting she join Frederick.
"Go have a drink with Mr. Hastings."
The woman appeared reluctant at the sight of Frederick's brooding, chilly demeanor, but she sat down next to him nonetheless.
"Mr. Hastings, I can keep you..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Sebastian strode over and sat down between her and Frederick. He had been delayed by some last-minute business at his company.
As soon as Sebastian arrived, he dropped a bombshell that electrified the atmosphere.
"You're divorced?"
The others turned their attention to Frederick upon hearing Sebastian's words.
Hadn't Frederick been wanting a divorce for a while now?
Why did he now seem like someone who had been abandoned?
