Chapter 269 Searching for Her Lips in the Dark
After resting for half an hour, Rachel couldn't stand staying in the hospital any longer. She got up, lifted the comforter, and prepared to go home.
Seeing her hastily get out of bed, Amelia quickly reached out to support her. "Take it easy, or you'll faint again."
Amelia looked rather helpless. She wondered if all successful people disliked staying in hospitals.
Rachel had this issue, and so did Frederick.
On the way back, Rachel was on the phone the entire time, her expression serious. Amelia sat beside her, feeling troubled just by listening.
After ending the call, Rachel looked down at her phone, typed a message, and said to Amelia, "Mr. Montgomery is seriously ill. I won't be home for dinner tonight. I'll drop you off at home and then see him. Mr. Montgomery helped the Davis Manor before. We can't be ungrateful."
Elbert Montgomery had three sons who were always at odds, both openly and secretly. When Elbert was healthy, he could keep them in check.
Now that he was ill, the three sons started eyeing the Montgomery Group, each determined to seize control. Thus, the Montgomery family had split into three factions.
Elbert usually spent more time with his youngest son. Now that Elbert was seriously ill, he rarely saw visitors.
Rumors were rampant outside, saying that Elbert wasn't really sick but was being held captive by Alvin, who was forcing him to draft a will to secure most of the Montgomery family's assets.
It was no wonder people speculated this way. After all, Rex and Orlando were born to the first wife, while Alvin was an adopted son.
Regardless of who took over the Montgomery family in the future, the Davis Manor would need to maintain relations with them.
At this critical juncture, it wouldn't look good if the Davis Manor didn't visit. But visiting might make three sons of the Montgomery family suspect the Davis Manor of taking sides. Not visiting, on the other hand, raised concerns that Elbert might indeed be seriously ill.
Rachel felt a headache coming on and couldn't help but rub her temples.
Amelia took her hand down and said seriously, "You're not feeling well, and you're injured. Let me go to see Mr. Montgomery. I'm a doctor and can represent the Davis Manor. I can also find out Mr. Montgomery's exact condition."
Rachel hesitated.
Amelia wasn't involved in business, which made it a suitable choice for her to visit Elbert.
However, Rachel didn't know the exact situation with the Montgomery family, so she was hesitant to let Amelia take the risk.
Seeing Rachel not immediately agree, Amelia continued, "I'm not involved in business, so Alvin shouldn't make things difficult for me or be too wary of me. If you go, you might not even get to see Mr. Montgomery."
Tina also nodded in agreement. "Ms. Davis, I think Amelia is right. You're still injured and should go home to recover. Plus, Amelia does need some experience."
Today's car accident had really scared Tina.
Rachel pondered for a few seconds, then looked at Amelia, "You go then."
Rachel added, "Tina will go with you. If there's any problem, call me immediately."
Amelia nodded seriously, "Okay."
Tina drove Rachel back to the Davis Manor.
As soon as they arrived, Susan hurried out of the house to help Rachel.
Seeing Rachel with bandages, Susan's eyes reddened, and she muttered, "How could you be so careless?"
Rachel patted her hand, indicating she was fine, and then gave Tina a few instructions.
Amelia, sitting in the back seat, stuck her head out the window to look at Rachel. "Don't worry."
Rachel nodded, but she still couldn't help feeling uneasy.
Watching Tina drive Amelia away from the Davis Manor, Rachel still took out her phone and called Frederick.
Having Frederick involved would ensure everything went smoothly.
On the way, Tina explained the Montgomery family's situation to Amelia.
Amelia listened attentively.
The Davis Group had more dealings with Orlando and some collaborations with Rex, but it did not interact with Alvin at all.
If the Montgomery Group ended up in Alvin's hands, the Davis Group's interests would be harmed.
Although the Davis Manor didn't want to take sides, they also didn't want Alvin to take over the Montgomery Group.
So, this time, Amelia's visit to Mr. Montgomery was not only to check on Elbert's health but also to subtly inquire about his preferred successor.
Amelia felt a bit of a headache listening to all this.
The business world had too many variables and complexities.
When they arrived at the building where Alvin lived, Amelia was mentally prepared.
Amelia opened the car door, got out, and walked into the building.
The security personnel at the entrance immediately stopped her. After questioning Amelia, they notified someone upstairs before allowing Amelia to enter.
The building's tight security made it no wonder there were rumors about Elbert being held captive by Alvin.
As the elevator doors opened, Amelia was about to step in when she saw Frederick standing inside.
She initially wanted to ask why Frederick was there. Still, then she realized that since Rachel had received the news, Frederick must have as well.
After all, they were in the same circle.
So she asked, "Are you here to visit Mr. Montgomery, too?"
Frederick looked at her gently and said softly, "No."
Amelia paused.
Frederick then said calmly, "Come in."
Amelia replied, "Okay," and stepped into the elevator.
Frederick pressed the button for the top floor, his warm gaze fixed on Amelia standing beside him.
He muttered, "I heard you were coming to visit Mr. Montgomery on behalf of Rachel, so I came too."
Frederick implied that he came because of her.
Amelia pursed her lips and looked up slightly at the man beside her.
'After Amber got the news, she would have informed Frederick immediately, right? That didn't seem like Amber's style,' Amelia pondered.
Amelia parted her red lips to speak, but suddenly, there was a noise from the top of the elevator. With a crack, the elevator shook and plunged into darkness.
Amelia's heart skipped a beat. Before she could react, she was pulled into a warm embrace.
Frederick whispered, "Don't be afraid, I'm here."
Amelia had never encountered such a situation before, and her heart raced.
She asked lightly, "Is the elevator malfunctioning?"
"Probably," Frederick replied in a deep voice, unconsciously holding Amelia tighter.
"Frederick," Amelia was about to ask Frederick to let her go when the elevator shook again. Her face turned pale, and she tightly gripped his shirt.
Amelia murmured, "We're not going to fall, are we?"
This was the first time Amelia had encountered an elevator malfunction. Standing in the small and pitch-black elevator, she was gripped by an inexplicable fear.
Sensing her fear, Frederick was about to take out his phone to call for help but paused for a second. He then put his phone away, tightened his arm around her waist, and rested his chin on her head.
He placated, "We won't."
Her grip on his shirt remained tight. She was not only worried about the elevator suddenly falling but also scared of the dark. She had never been comfortable in very dark places, and the surrounding darkness made her especially anxious.
"If you're scared, you can hold onto me," Frederick said softly, his voice low.
He then took her hand, which was gripping his shirt, and placed it around his waist.
In her panic, Amelia's forehead brushed against Adam's apple. Her breathing was erratic due to her nervousness, and the warm air from her nose hit his collarbone.
The faint fragrance from her body continuously wafted into his nose. Holding her soft and fragrant body suddenly felt like torture.
Frederick's Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily, and the urge to kiss her surged to the forefront of his mind.
The thought crossed his mind.
He leaned down slightly, searching for her lips in the darkness.
