Chapter 274 Allow Me This Minute to Hold You
The movie told the story of a woman who, after her fiancé's death, couldn't move on and decided to write a letter to him in heaven.
She used his old high school address as the recipient's address.
To her surprise, she got a reply signed by her fiancé.
She wrote back again and quickly received another reply, but this time, she asked who they were.
Through their letters, she discovered the person replying was her fiancé's high school classmate, who had the same name as him.
At her request, the classmate shared stories about her fiancé's high school days.
Only then did she realize her calm and reserved fiancé also had a bright and sunny side.
Curious, she found his high school yearbook and saw that the girl with the same name looked remarkably like her.
The middle part of the movie delved into her fiancé's high school crush and his entanglement with the girl who shared his name.
The youthful crush was both subtle and bold.
Everyone regretted the love they missed out on during their youth.
But Amelia felt deeply for the woman.
After her fiancé's death, she realized she was just a stand-in for his dream lover.
She couldn't determine whether he had truly loved her or always saw her as a substitute.
Because he could never speak again.
All the moments she spent with him would torment her in the days to come, unable to let go.
The movie ended.
Amelia sat in her seat, tears silently falling, her emotions unable to calm down.
Frederick wiped her tears with a tissue, his voice low and hoarse, "I'll have this movie taken down right away."
He didn't know it was a tragic drama.
"Why take it down? It was a good movie," Amelia muttered, looking up at Frederick with tearful eyes.
"It's just a bit upsetting," she added.
She took the tissue from Frederick's hand and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes.
When the movie started, and the male lead was already deceased, Frederick sensed something was off. So he watched Amelia's state the whole time, only focusing on wiping her tears, missing most of the plot.
Seeing Amelia cry made him feel blocked up inside.
Amelia wiped away her tears, glanced at Frederick beside her, and said softly, "If you take down this movie, others won't be able to see it. I can't be the only one crying, right?"
Frederick looked at her slightly red eyes and remained silent.
Most of the people in the theater had already left. Amelia also got up from her seat and turned to Frederick.
"Let's go home." She said, taking a step down, her mood slightly eased.
From the woman's perspective, the whole movie was very oppressive, and Amelia couldn't help but feel depressed as well.
Frederick grabbed her shoulder, a hint of regret flashing in his eyes. After a moment of hesitation, he chose to hug her from behind, his voice low and tinged with guilt.
"I regret bringing you to see this movie. Except for this part, our time together today was very pleasant and beautiful."
Amelia's body stiffened slightly. She wanted to tell Frederick that this pleasantness and beauty seemed to come a bit too late.
Before she could speak, the cleaner came in to clean the theater. Amelia calmed down, patted Frederick's arm around her, and moved it away.
"We need to go." Her voice was calm as if his actions hadn't touched her at all.
Frederick lowered his arm, watching her walk down the steps, feeling a deep sense of emptiness.
Amelia walked to the theater door and, seeing that Frederick hadn't followed, turned to look at him. Frederick saw her gaze and immediately followed.
The two left the cinema together.
Back at the Davis Manor, Amelia opened the car door and got out, Frederick following suit. He said softly, "I'll walk you inside."
Amelia didn't refuse.
They entered the Davis Manor together, walking through the yard, the streetlights casting long shadows of the two. Frederick looked at the shadows on the ground, his fingers twitching, wanting to reach out and hold Amelia's hand.
Just as he made up his mind to grab her hand, Amelia's phone rang, so what he finally touched was merely air.
Amelia picked up her phone and saw that it was Rachel calling.
She swiped to answer. But Rachel had hung up the call.
Amelia raised an eyebrow and looked up at the second-floor balcony, where she saw Rachel standing.
Frederick also looked up at the balcony, following Amelia's gaze. Rachel was leaning on the balcony, raising her cup slightly as if greeting him.
From such a distance, Frederick couldn't see Rachel's expression but could sense her smugness. Perhaps when they got out of the car, all his actions had been within Rachel's sight. She must have seen through his nervousness when he wanted to hold Amelia's hand.
Rachel had indeed been watching Frederick's actions. She would let him achieve what he wanted just like that. Amelia had suffered a lot in the past. If Frederick didn't go through the same, it wouldn't be fair to Amelia for all the hardships she had endured during her pregnancy.
So when she saw Frederick's restlessness, she timely dialed Amelia's number.
Rachel smiled and took a sip from her cup, and the bitter taste of the medicine instantly filled her mouth. Her face darkened, and she lost all her smile.
The medicine was too bitter.
After Amelia entered the house, Frederick stopped at the door. He looked at Amelia and softly said, "Good night.".
Amelia nodded lightly and replied in a calm voice, "Good night."
She said, bending down to change her shoes, but Frederick showed no sign of leaving.
After taking off her shoes, Amelia glanced at him. She asked faintly, "Mr. Hastings, you don't want to come in for a drink again, do you?"
Frederick looked at her, inquiring, "Would you invite me in?"
Amelia didn't invite him in but instead took a bottle of mineral water from the cabinet and handed it to him.
Frederick's fingers closed around the water bottle, a sense of resignation washing over him as he grasped it—and inadvertently, Amelia's hand. With a firm grip, he drew Amelia to his side, enfolding her in a tight embrace.
Amelia froze momentarily before pushing him but failed.
In a soft, controlled tone, Frederick's voice reached her ear. "Just a moment, Amelia. Allow me this minute to hold you."
Amelia's body stiffened slightly, and suddenly, some unpleasant memories flashed through her mind. She remembered three years ago when the Davis Group was in trouble, she had also humbly begged Frederick for a few minutes to talk.
She moved her lips slightly but didn't continue to struggle.
When the minute was up, Frederick showed no sign of letting go. Amelia took a deep breath, pushed him away, and created some distance between them.
"Time's up." Her voice was cold, without much emotion.
Frederick was stunned, his expression blank.
Amelia caught the fleeting confusion and surprise in his deep eyes. It seemed he had clearly forgotten what he had done to her three years ago.
Amelia pursed her lips and said in a calm voice. "Compared to you, I'm still not as heartless. Three years ago, you wouldn't even give me a minute."
