Chapter 201 The Flaws of Men
Pearl Building.
After calming down, Amelia tidied up the bedroom and threw the sheets into the washing machine.
While she waited for the sheets to be washed, she sat on the sofa with her phone, scrolling through Facebook.
As soon as she opened the app, she saw a post from an intern nurse on Facebook.
This intern nurse had previously interned in the emergency department but had now transferred to another department.
Amelia had shadowed her for a day, and she had taken the initiative to add Amelia's contact information.
Amelia was surprised to find out that she was a fan of Amber.
The nurse: [Amber and Mr. Hastings are such a perfect match! They are both so filial. They accompanied Brittany for a stroll.]
Under the post was a picture.
In the photo, Amber was covering Brittany with a blanket.
From the angle of the shot, Brittany's expression at that moment was unclear.
Amelia clicked on the picture and saw the gentle and filial expression on Amber's face, which struck her as particularly striking.
She sighed and exited Facebook.
Suddenly, the door opened from the outside. Amelia thought it was Frederick returning. She turned her head and saw Mary walking in.
"Hello, Mary." Amelia greeted her.
"Hello, Mrs. Hastings." Mary was surprised to see Amelia here. Her eyes were filled with astonishment.
Although Mary and Frederick had been divorced for many years, she still addressed her this way every time she saw her.
Amelia pursed her lips, hiding the bitterness in her eyes. She asked, "Did Frederick send you over?"
Mary should have been at the hospital taking care of Brittany right now.
Mary nodded. "Yes, Mr. Hastings asked me to come over to clean. He didn't tell me you were here, so I didn't bring you any food."
Amelia smiled lightly, got up from the sofa, picked up her phone, and softly said, "It's okay, I was just about to leave."
After speaking, she walked to the entrance, put on her shoes, waved goodbye to Mary, and left the Pearl Building.
The security personnel at the entrance recognized Amelia and respectfully opened the door for her.
Amelia walked out and waited for a car by the side of the road.
Before the car arrived, she received a call from Frederick.
Frederick had taken Brittany back to the ward. He was on his way back to the Pearl Building at this moment.
Before getting into the car, Frederick checked the Pearl Building surveillance. He saw Amelia standing alone in the living room for a long time. He didn't know what she was thinking.
When he saw how lonely she looked, he couldn't bear it and decided to make the call.
Frederick said, "You're awake."
A deep and indifferent voice reached Amelia's ears.
Amelia couldn't help but bite her lip lightly and softly replied, "Yes." She didn't want to talk much.
Frederick couldn't help but grip the steering wheel more tightly. He asked, "Amelia, don't you have anything to say about last night?"
Amelia paused, a subtle emotion flickering in her eyes. She remained silent for a few seconds before responding, "It's all because I got drunk and delayed things."
Frederick's hand clenched visibly on the steering wheel.
It was all because she got drunk?
What had she delayed?
Did she feel like she had delayed something because of him? Because it had been him, not Jesse?
Frederick felt a fire burning inside him, with no outlet.
As Amelia spoke, a surge of heat passed through her body, and she stiffened for a moment.
She had cleaned up properly before.
Unless...
She gritted her teeth and asked, "Did you forget to use a condom last night?"
Frederick replied, "I'm not some gigolo from a nightclub. I don't carry condoms with me. You were in a hurry last night, so I didn't take any precautions. Today is probably your safe day. If..."
If Amelia were pregnant, he was willing to take responsibility.
However, before Frederick could finish his sentence, Amelia hung up.
There was a pharmacy across from the Pearl Building.
Amelia went straight to the pharmacy and bought a pill. She was not ready to welcome a new life.
And she already had Anna. She didn't plan to have another child.
Frederick's car arrived near the Pearl Building. He saw Amelia from a distance.
After seeing Amelia hang up on him and head straight to the pharmacy, Frederick hurriedly sped up to catch up.
He parked the car by the side of the road and walked into the pharmacy.
However, Amelia had already taken the pill and was throwing the packaging into the trash.
He stopped in his tracks, his eyes cold and sullen.
When Amelia looked up and saw Frederick standing at the entrance of the pharmacy, she was momentarily stunned.
"Aren't you supposed to be at the hospital?"
Frederick's face was stern and expressionless. "What did you just take?" he asked coldly.
Amelia raised an eyebrow and glanced at the medicine in the trash, saying, "It's exactly the kind of medicine you're thinking of. Don't worry. I won't cause you any trouble."
Frederick's face turned gloomy as he sneered. "You're pretty smart."
Amelia felt that he was mocking her. After glancing at him, she walked out of the pharmacy.
Frederick followed her with a cold expression on his face, grabbed her wrist, and said, "As a doctor, you should know that this medicine has significant side effects."
Amelia bit her lip, looked up at Frederick, and gritted her teeth. "This is all because you didn't wear a condom last night. I wasn't sure if I would get pregnant. If I did get pregnant, having an abortion would be more harmful to my body."
Frederick was silenced by her words. He looked at Amelia. His heart ached.
Amelia had a calm expression on her face. She seemed resistant to the idea of having his child.
He felt a sharp pain in his heart, and his face grew colder.
Frederick coldly said, "How are you handling this situation so well? Is it because of your unexpected pregnancy with Anna? How many pills have you taken over the years?"
Amelia's face paled, and she suddenly pulled her wrist away from Frederick's grip, raising her hand as if to slap him.
But before she could do so, Frederick grabbed her wrist again.
Frederick's eyes took on a hint of crimson, and he stared at Amelia fiercely, closing in. "Amelia, did you take birth control pills during our three years of marriage?"
They had never taken any safety measures in their marital life.
But during those three years, Amelia had never gotten pregnant.
At that time, he hadn't paid much attention to it, but now the thought stabbed at his heart.
She had gotten pregnant with Anna after a night of indulgence.
Why hadn’t she gotten pregnant during their three years of marriage?
Frederick underwent physical examinations every year, and his physical condition was excellent.
Amelia might have been taking birth control pills all along.
As Amelia heard his question, her eyes were slightly swollen. She furrowed her brows and said, "We are already divorced. The past isn’t important. Even if I didn't take the pills, got pregnant, and had a child, you would still fall in love with Amber again when she returned to the country."
Frederick frowned. If they had a child, he would never have suggested a divorce so easily.
Amelia continued, "Mr. Hastings, you're only interested in me because I’m avoiding you, and you haven't adapted yet. My days are miserable, without a glimmer of hope, and even if you pass by me, you won't spare me a glance. Men are flawed. You are no different from other men."
