Chapter 426 A Facade

Cynthia was hanging out in Amelia's office for what felt like forever.

She probably had a ton of stuff bottled up, not knowing where to let it all out, and no one to spill it to. But now, she got one.

Amelia just sat there, listening quietly until Cynthia finally ran out of steam. By then, Cynthia looked way more chill.

Cynthia mumbled a thanks, "Amelia, thanks for letting me ramble. Never thought I'd be this bitter at fifty. But, honestly, after getting it all out, I feel kinda better. Sorry for dumping all this on you."

Cynthia still wanted to keep some pride in front of Amelia.

Amelia gave her a gentle smile and said, "You just needed a listener. You trust me, so you told me all this."

Cynthia shot Amelia a grateful smile. Thinking Dylan might be awake by now, she worried the caregiver might be busy with something else and not in Dylan's room. She said her goodbyes and headed back to the hospital room.

Once Cynthia left, Amelia dove back into her work.

After work, Frederick came to pick her up. Amelia bent down to get in the car and noticed Anna wasn't there. Her eyes narrowed. "Where's Anna?" she asked, a bit of edge in her voice. Anna had left with them that morning.

Frederick pulled her close and said softly, "Anna was sent home. Mr. Wright's heading to Fondaniss tomorrow, and I'm hosting a dinner for him."

Hearing that, Amelia let out a small sigh of relief. She pulled out her phone and called Vincent to make sure Anna was home, then leaned on Frederick's shoulder, looking a bit worn out.

Frederick started massaging her fingers. By the time they got to the restaurant, Amelia was feeling more lively.

After Felix parked the car, a waiter came over to open the door for them.

As Amelia got out, she saw Rachel stepping out of another car.

Amelia walked over and linked arms with Rachel like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Frederick wanted to pull her back to his side, but after reaching out, he pulled his hand back. He was starting to think Amelia liked her sister more than him.

Whatever Rachel said, Amelia would go along with it.

Feeling a bit left out, Frederick watched the two of them walk into the restaurant together, a hint of hurt in his eyes.

Sebastian was already at the restaurant, sitting on a sofa in the lobby, looking at his phone. When he saw Amelia and Rachel walk in, he looked up.

Amelia and Rachel noticed Sebastian too.

Amelia shot a questioning look at Frederick, who just gave a calm, helpless smile. In their tight-knit circle, running into familiar faces was no big deal, and Sebastian was more than just a familiar face—he was Frederick's childhood buddy.

Rachel's expression didn't change much when she saw Sebastian; she just glanced over him calmly.

Sebastian got up from the sofa, looking way more chill than before. "Ms. Rachel Davis," he called out, switching up his tone.

Rachel stopped, gave him a quick glance, and nodded slightly, her voice cool and distant. "Mr. Kingsley."

Seeing Rachel's cold vibe, Sebastian's eyes showed a flicker of sadness, but he quickly pulled it together and apologized. "I'm sorry about the exchange meeting, I lost my cool."

Rachel nodded lightly, still looking unbothered. "It's fine, I didn't mind."

Their convo was polite but distant, like they were just acquaintances, not people with history.

Amelia watched, low-key impressed by her sister's calm and unshakeable strength.

After a brief exchange, they didn't say much more.

Rachel followed the waiter, and a few steps later, Charles walked in from the entrance.

His voice was all cheerful. "What a coincidence. Did everyone show up at the same time?"

Rachel stopped and turned to look at Charles coming in.

Charles immediately zeroed in on Rachel, smiling. "Ms. Rachel Davis."

Rachel nodded slightly, "Mr. Wright, good afternoon."

Charles stopped next to Rachel, glancing at Amelia's hand linked with Rachel's arm.

Amelia noticed Charles's look and, for some reason, felt the urge to pull her hand back. She did and naturally moved back to Frederick's side.

Even though Charles was smiling, Amelia felt there was something a bit dangerous about it.

Seeing Amelia retreat to his side, Frederick wrapped his arm around her waist and asked softly, "What's up?"

Amelia shook her head lightly, "Nothing." Then she whispered, "I just feel safer next to you."

Rachel and Charles were both strong-willed, so their vibes matched well.

But for Amelia, being around Charles felt like his aura might overwhelm her.

Frederick was pleased by Amelia's words, his lips curling into a smile. He pulled her closer and said softly, "Then stay right here with me."

Amelia nodded, and Frederick, smiling, tightened his grip on her waist, feeling pretty satisfied with Amelia's dependence on him.

Charles and Rachel walked ahead, chatting. Charles was definitely leading the conversation.

Amelia rarely saw a guy who could keep up with Rachel and even take the lead.

If Charles was solid, Amelia thought he might be a good match for Rachel. After all, Rachel needed someone to have her back, both in life and at work.

Thinking this, Amelia glanced at Sebastian.

Sebastian's eyes briefly lingered on Rachel and Charles before he looked away, pretending to be engrossed in his phone.

But Amelia noticed his hand gripping the phone was veined, showing that his calm demeanor was just a front.
