Chapter 461 The Servant's Unusual Behavior
Rachel stepped into the elevator, a chill practically radiating off her. Tina stood next to her, keeping quiet. As they left the Hastings Group building, Tina noticed Nancy's car parked nearby. "Ms. Davis, Nancy's still here," she whispered.
Rachel's face stayed icy, and she just gave a short "Hmm."
Inside her car, Nancy was lounging with her headphones on, a smug smile on her face. But that smile vanished when she saw Rachel walking out of the Hastings Group, still looking determined and cold. Nancy yanked off her headphones and handed them to her assistant.
"Let's go. We need to move fast and catch Rachel off guard," she ordered.
The assistant nodded, and their driver sped off. As Nancy's car passed Rachel, she rolled up the window, avoiding Rachel's piercing gaze.
Nancy took a deep breath, feeling a bit annoyed. She thought to herself that once the Davis Group went under, she'd see if Rachel could still act so high and mighty.
Rachel's expression grew colder as she watched Nancy's car disappear, planning her next move before turning away as Tina pulled their car around.
Once inside, Tina asked, "Back to the Davis Manor or the office? Felix said Ms. Amelia Davis was at the Hastings Group too, but she left after a quick chat with Mr. Hastings. Nancy was in his office earlier; they must have crossed paths."
Nancy was sly and resourceful, way tougher to deal with than Amber. Amelia might not be able to handle her.
Rachel's eyes flashed with determination. "Straight to the Davis Group. My sister can handle her setbacks. Frederick's given me a tough problem, and I need to come up with a good solution."
Rachel's mind raced with strategies, knowing she needed the perfect plan to counter someone as calculated as Nancy.
Tina, sensing Rachel's resolve, nodded and started the car.
Meanwhile, Amelia returned to the Davis Manor from the Hastings Group and sat on the sofa, deep in thought about how to deal with Frederick's custody grab.
Casey, the maid, quietly set a dish of Amelia's favorite fruits in front of her. "Ms. Davis, you look troubled. Anything I can help with?"
Amelia rubbed her temples, trying to hide her heavy thoughts. "No," she replied shortly.
Casey persisted, "If you ever need to talk, Ms. Davis, sometimes it helps to get things off your chest."
Amelia's frown deepened.
Casey tried a different approach, guessing boldly, "Did you break up with Mr. Hastings?"
Amelia's brow furrowed sharply. "No," she snapped, her patience wearing thin. She hadn't accepted Frederick's recent attempts to reconcile, and anything about him was a sore subject. Her focus was on keeping custody of Anna, away from Frederick.
Casey continued, undeterred. "Ms. Davis, nowadays even remarriages aren't a big deal. Considering Mr. Hastings' background, might it be easier to let Ms. Anna stay with him? Raising a child alone is tough..."
Amelia cut her off sharply. "How long have you been working here, Casey?"
Casey quickly replied, "Two months."
Amelia's gaze turned icy. "In two months, Susan should have taught you everything you need to know."
Casey nodded awkwardly. "Yes, Susan is very responsible and has taught me everything."
Amelia's expression turned colder. "Then you should know what's appropriate to speak about in this house. If you can't keep your mouth shut, this job might not be for you."
Casey's face went pale, and she quickly muttered, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to overstep. I just wanted to help."
Amelia's tone was flat. "Go take care of your other duties."
Casey had hoped to get more information from Amelia, but she hadn't expected the usually easygoing Amelia to have such a stern side. Seeing Amelia's impatience, she took a deep breath and wisely walked away.
Amelia watched Casey leave, rubbed her temples, and headed upstairs.
Having already put Anna to sleep, Susan quickly said as Amelia came up, "Ms. Anna Davis is napping. Ms. Amelia Davis, have you had lunch?"
Amelia shook her head. "Not yet."
Susan had thought Amelia had eaten at Frederick's place, but seeing that she hadn't even had a meal before coming back, it was clear their conversation hadn't gone well. She quickly said, "I'll go to the kitchen and have them prepare some dishes for you."
As Susan was about to go downstairs, Amelia stopped her. "I don't have much of an appetite today. I just want to rest in my room for a while."
Susan's expression immediately turned worried. She persuaded, "Ms. Davis, you can't skip meals. Your health is crucial right now. If you get sick, Mr. Hastings will use it to fight for Anna's custody. Take care of yourself and don't give him a chance."
As Susan spoke, Casey happened to pass by downstairs. Amelia noticed Casey, her eyes showing a hint of contemplation. After a few seconds of silence, she nodded. "Alright. Then go ahead and have the kitchen prepare something. I don't need much."
Susan nodded and quickly went downstairs.
Casey, lingering nearby, quickly interjected, "I'll inform the chef. Susan, you stay and check on Ms. Anna Davis."
Amelia, wary of Casey's unusual enthusiasm, watched her closely. She watched Casey briskly head to the back kitchen, her expression slightly inquisitive.
Following Amelia's gaze, Susan quietly asked, "Ms. Davis, is there a problem?"
Amelia turned her attention back, a plan forming in her mind. "Keep an eye on Casey for me. Let me know when the food is ready."
Susan looked a bit puzzled by Amelia's words, but seeing her serious expression, she nodded. "Okay."
Amelia responded with a "Hmm" and returned to her room.
Once Casey was out of sight, she quickly took out her phone and sent a message.
Casey: [Mr. Hastings is aiming for Anna's custody, so Amelia is planning to hire a lawyer to fight back.]
A minute later, a reply came, accompanied by a transfer of funds: [Delete the messages. Report immediately if anything changes.]
Casey deleted the chat and pocketed her phone, resuming her duties with a satisfied look.
After Amelia's lunch was prepared, Casey went upstairs to call her down to eat.
As she passed the nursery, she couldn't help but glance inside. Susan was tidying up Anna's toys. Noticing Casey's gaze, Susan's expression darkened, and she walked out.
She scolded sternly, "Who told you to come upstairs? Didn't I say those in charge of the dining area shouldn't come to the second-floor living area? Don't you remember?"
Casey smiled awkwardly and apologized softly. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Susan. I was just worried that Ms. Amelia Davis might be hungry."
Susan's eyes darkened with displeasure. After sending Casey downstairs, she went to knock on Amelia's door.
Amelia had already informed Rachel about Casey's unusual behavior.
Given the current situation, she couldn't determine what Casey's actions meant. If she was a spy sent by a rival group, Rachel's methods would surely use that information.
After hearing Amelia's words, Rachel responded with a cold laugh. "Don't alert her. Wait for me to come back."
