Chapter 16 What Do You Think

Amber's eyes were filled with hope. Amelia felt very suffocated. She nodded and said, "Really?
"There's no love between them.
"Divorce is just a matter of time."
She tried to keep herself calm. After speaking, she stepped out of Amber's hospital room.
Amber watched Amelia's retreating back with a meaningful look.
After Amelia left Amber’s hospital room, hurried footsteps came from the next room.
Amelia turned her head and saw a nurse wheeling out an elderly woman with cancer from the adjacent room.
The old woman was of advanced age, and the cancer had led to many complications. At that moment, she had a sudden attack.
Amelia had no time to dwell in sorrow as the nurse hurriedly wheeled the elderly woman into the emergency room.

After several hours of desperate efforts by the medical team, the elderly woman passed away. In her final moments, she clutched Amelia’s hand, her weak gaze filled with a comforting assurance as if to tell Amelia not to feel guilty.

The elderly woman had battled cancer for many years and had a prolonged stay at the hospital. She was among the first patients Amelia had treated. Her optimistic spirit and warm personality made her well-liked among most of the hospital staff.

Once the elderly woman let go of Amelia's hand, Amelia took a deep breath, strived to remain composed, and stepped out of the emergency room to allow the patient's family to enter and bid their final farewell.

Amidst the cries from the emergency room, Amelia fought back her own grief and returned to her office.

She felt overwhelmed. At that moment, she could no longer control her negative emotions.

Trembling, she pulled out her phone from the drawer and dialed Rachel's number.

"Rachel, the lawyer hasn't contacted me," Amelia said.

"The lawyer's a coward," Rachel replied calmly. "When he heard you were filing for divorce from Frederick, he backed out. I'm still looking for another lawyer for you."

Amelia bit her lip and simply responded with a subdued "Hmm."

Rachel sensed something was off and asked, "What's wrong? Did Frederick mistreat you?"

Hearing the concern in Rachel's voice, Amelia couldn't help but break down in tears.

"Rachel, I regret it," Amelia confessed.

Rachel understood that Amelia was suppressing her sorrow and remained silent for a long while.

When Amelia married into the prominent Davis family at the height of their influence in Kasfee, the Hastings Group crumbled due to factional infighting within the family.

Brittany, a shrewd woman, saw Amelia's affection for Frederick and requested the Davis family's blessing so that Amelia could marry him.

Vincent, who had a high regard for Frederick, and knowing Amelia's feelings for him, consented to the marriage between Amelia and Frederick.

Rachel had once warned Amelia to marry a man who loved her, not to try to move a man who didn't.

Yet, Amelia had said that even if she couldn't win Frederick's heart, she would never regret it.

Only three years later, the once-confident Amelia tearfully admitted to Rachel that she had regrets.

Rachel felt a tangle of emotions. Normally, she might have scolded Amelia, but at this time, she had no wish to reprimand her sister, who had never faced any hardships in her life.

"If you regret it, then come home," Rachel finally said. "The Davis family can still take care of you."
Upon hearing Rachel's words, Amelia couldn't hold back her tears any longer. She hastily ended the call and slumped over her desk, sobbing uncontrollably.

Colleagues walking by Amelia's office had also heard the sad news that the endearing elderly woman had passed away. Even though doctors in the hospital were no strangers to death, anyone's heart would sink at the sight of life slipping away.

The colleague didn't enter Amelia's office to offer consolation. after all, she had to come to grips with her emotions on her own.

After a while, the phone rang in Amelia's office.

She collected herself and answered the call.

"Hello, this is Amelia."

Her voice was hoarse, and she tried her best to keep from crying again.

"Hello, Ms. Davis. This is the intensive care unit. Your father has awakened, and he's asking to see you."

Amelia paused for a moment, quickly wiped away her tears, and responded eagerly, "Thank you. I'll be right there."

Amelia touched up her makeup in her locker, making sure she showed no signs of distress before she hurried to see Vincent.

Vincent's condition had stabilized. As Amelia arrived upstairs, the ICU doctor informed her that Vincent would soon be moved to a regular room.

After expressing her gratitude, Amelia made her way to Vincent's room.

Just as she reached the doorway and pushed open the door, she saw Frederick sitting beside Vincent's bed, talking with him.

She hesitated for a moment, then entered the room. Vincent smiled immediately.

"Amelia, you're here."

Amelia nodded and moved forward to take Vincent's hand, sitting beside the bed.

"Dad, I was so scared."

Tears were on the verge of spilling from her eyes once again.

Vincent immediately apologized, admitting that he had been too impulsive.

Vincent had always been successful. When he experienced failure in his middle age, it was something he couldn't accept.

"Frederick just told me Rachel has saved the company."

"Now that Rachel can handle all the company's affairs on her own, you're the only one I'm worried about."

Saying so, Vincent gently ruffled Amelia's hair.

Amelia snorted softly, "If you're worried about me, then don't do anything foolish.

"Without you protecting me, everyone will think they can push me around."

At that, Amelia's eyes brimmed with hot tears. To hide her emotions, she leaned her head against Vincent's arm to conceal her tears from him.

Frederick sat quietly to the side, watching her with an impassive expression.
Vincent patted Amelia on the back with a reassuring chuckle, "You're married now, why are you still acting like a kid? Frederick is going to tease you about this. Besides, you're Frederick's wife now. Who would dare to bully you?"

Amelia was silent.

It was Frederick who was bullying her!

She could feel Frederick's gaze on her, and with gritted teeth, she shot him a glare before looking away.

Frederick raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

After a while, a nurse arrived to help Vincent move to a new room.

Amelia and Frederick spent a long time with him in the new room.

Glancing at the watch, Vincent said, "It's getting late, and you and Frederick have work tomorrow. You should head home."

The Davis family's nanny quickly added, "Ms. Davis, I'll take good care of Mr. Davis. You and Mr. Hastings should head back."

"Alright, Susan, thank you for helping us take care of my father."

Daniel had already sent a message to Amelia, saying he was waiting for her downstairs at the hospital, so she was anxious to leave.

However, Frederick was in no hurry. As she made to leave, he reached out, pulled her back to his side, and said warmly to Vincent, "Vincent, I've sent over some of your favorite dishes to the hospital. I don't often get a chance to take a break. I'll stay here with you for dinner and a chat."

Vincent was delighted to hear this and responded, "Great. It's been a long time since we had dinner together."
