Chapter 44 She Wasn't the First

The driver set off immediately, driving down the road.

Suddenly, a black car zoomed past them from behind.

Rachel's expression instantly turned chilly.

Meanwhile, Amelia's phone was buzzing nonstop with messages.

Rachel glanced at Amelia.

Taking out her phone with an awkward smile, Amelia said, "It's just my coworkers in our work group chat."

While speaking, Amelia looked down at her phone, only to find that she had been added to a brand-new group chat.

[OMG! Mrs. Brittany personally came down to teach Amber a lesson in place of Mrs. Hastings!]

[Ms. Davis, did you get a heads-up on why you left work early?]

[I'm so curious about Mrs. Hastings! She took down Amber without even showing up.]

Messages kept popping up, indicating that the excitement was palpable among her department colleagues.

Amelia stared at the stream of messages, lost in thought.
Rachel leaned in for a quick look and immediately ordered the driver, "Head to General Hospital."

Amelia hesitated, then regained her composure.

"Rachel, let's go home."

She didn't want to witness Frederick protecting Amber.

Rachel had had a few drinks and was now quite excited. In this state, she definitely wouldn't handle the situation with her usual calm.

"Plus, you bumped into Amber at the hospital earlier. She mistook you for Frederick's wife. We don't need to cause more trouble."

Upon hearing Amelia's words, Rachel burst into laughter.

"Then I definitely need to go."

Rachel's smile seemed a bit sinister to Amelia. As she tried to speak, Rachel placed a hand over her mouth.

"Stop. Listen to me."

Amelia fell silent at once.

Inside General Hospital, Brittany stood in Amber's hospital room.

Amber got up from her bed, nervous.

"Mrs. Brittany, what brings you here?"

Brittany looked cold, her expression still carrying an air of authority despite her age.

"I heard you were hospitalized, so I came to check on you. To seduce Frederick, you actually harm your own body. You're quite something. Do you think this will keep Frederick by your side?"

Amber's expression shifted. Frederick had been cold to her after her last discharge.

But during this hospitalization, he visited her frequently.

Amber indeed harbored such thoughts, yet she couldn't bear the physical pain.

Discovering her own unexecuted plans revealed by Brittany made her feel guilty.

However, she immediately denied it.

"Mrs. Brittany, you're mistaken. I..."

Brittany didn't give Amber a chance to explain.

"Mistaken? I'm not sure what misunderstanding you're talking about. When you asked me to sponsor your studies abroad, you promised never to see Frederick again. You even demanded that I pay three years' tuition upfront. Which of these demands did I not fulfill for you?"

Brittany paused, then questioned, "Why are you going back on your word now?"

Amber's face turned pale, and she couldn't meet Brittany's gaze.

"Mrs. Brittany, had you not insulted me with money, why would I have left Frederick?"

Brittany scoffed, "I insulted you with money? Wasn't it you who was willing to accept such humiliation?"
Amber bit her lip tightly, at a loss for words to counter Brittany's accusations.

Outside the door, some patients' family members were gathering and watching.

Tom was about to close the door when Brittany said coolly, "There's no need to close the door. We should let everyone see what a homewrecker looks like, a woman with no morals who has no shame."

Hearing this, Amber's face turned even paler as she bowed her head in silence.

Frederick pushed through the crowd and into the room, closing the door behind him. He frowned at the sight of his grandmother, Brittany, standing there with an aura of superiority. "Grandma, what are you doing?" he asked.

Upon seeing Frederick, tears that Amber had been holding back fell freely.

"Mrs. Brittany, even though I come from a less fortunate background, you may look down on me, but you shouldn't humiliate me like this. When I returned to the States, I didn't know Frederick was already married," she said amid sobs.

Frederick, you tell her I never disrupted your marriage to your wife."

Brittany scoffed when she saw Amber playing the victim as soon as Frederick entered.

Frederick walked over to his grandmother with a furrowed brow. "Grandma, she hasn't destroyed my marriage," he said. After a pause, he added, "This kind of scene you're making in the hospital not only damages her reputation but also mine. Let's leave."

Brittany snorted and turned to look at Frederick. "Do you even have a reputation left? Tell me, Frederick, who in General Hospital doesn't know you've got a mistress lying in a bed here?"

Frederick had placed Amber in the very hospital where Amelia worked and pressured Amelia to perform surgery on her. If it hadn't been for Amelia deciding to divorce and resign, Brittany would have remained unaware of the situation.

Brittany demanded, teeth clenched, "Frederick, are you even human?"

His expression turned grave. Although the door to the hospital room was tightly shut, it didn't prevent the onlookers from eavesdropping outside.

Rachel stepped off the elevator and immediately spotted the group clustered around the door. Even a patient with a cast stood determined amongst them.

Amelia refused to come up and face the situation. So Rachel came alone.

Taking in the crowd, Rachel said, "It looks like we've found Amber's room. Could you all make some room, please?"

She was wearing a striking black suit dress that day, smiling from the back of the group.

As the people turned and saw Rachel, they were surprised.

Rachel was beautiful. Despite her smile, there was an aloofness in her eyes and an air of nobility that one couldn't ignore.
As Rachel noticed everyone clearing a path for her, she smiled.

She approached the hospital room door and knocked gently.

The onlookers speculated whether she might be Frederick's wife. Judging by her appearance and demeanor, it seemed likely to them.

Upon opening the door and seeing Rachel, Tom hesitated for a moment.

With a smile, Rachel greeted Tom proactively, "Hello, Tom."

Tom quickly nodded, stepping aside to let Rachel in.

Once the door was closed again, Rachel's entry immediately captured everyone's attention inside the room.

Brittany, taken aback, shot Frederick a surprised look.

Rachel was exceptionally kind to Amelia. In Rachel's world, she was the only one allowed to reprimand Amelia. She would not tolerate anyone else picking on her.

Now that Rachel had arrived, it was clear that this situation wasn't going to be easily resolved.

"Rachel, what brings you here?" someone asked.

Rachel responded with a smile, "Grandma, I heard you were here, so I came to check on you."

It made sense for Rachel to call Brittany "Grandma," as she was Amelia's sister.

Amber's face turned even paler at the sight of Rachel. She trembled slightly, clutching the bedside railing for support.

Rachel gave Amber a brief, light-hearted look and chuckled.

Rachel seldom laughed. But when she did, her beauty became almost unbelievably striking.

"Grandma, you don't need to get upset over such a woman. There are too many out there who would do anything, even sell themselves, just to have some connection with families like ours. Ms. Roberts is neither the first nor the last," said Rachel.
