Chapter 24 Did You Send Dr. Davis Over?
Throughout the ride to the hospital, neither of them exchanged a word. The workgroup chat was buzzing with messages, most of which were about work arrangements. Amelia engrossed in reading, barely looked up and thus did not notice Frederick's increasingly grim gaze in the rearview mirror.
Arriving at the hospital, Amelia put away her phone and stepped out of the car.
A patient under her joint management had developed complications and was now in the emergency room. Amelia needed to be there as soon as possible.
Nicole had also just arrived at the hospital and hastened over to Amelia. Together, they walked swiftly into the hospital.
Frederick watched her dash out of the car and into the hospital without a backward glance or even a farewell and felt a flash of anger.
Amber, with the assistance of the new nurse, Mina, was slow to get out of bed and start moving around. When she saw Frederick's car pulling in, she felt a flicker of excitement, but every step caused her pain, so she dared not to move too hastily.
With Mina’s support, Amber took slow, careful steps. She watched Amelia step out of the rear seat, her expression showing a hint of surprise.
Amelia and Nicole walked into the hospital, and Amelia casually glanced at Amber, who was supported by Mina.
Amber must have seen her get out of Frederick's car, that's why her expression was so surprised. The elevator doors happened to open and Amelia, with no time to explain, quickly stepped inside.
Nicole was discussing a patient's condition with Amelia. She listened quietly and while glancing up, she saw Frederick entering the hospital from outside. His complexion was a bit off, clearly having noticed Amber, which is why he was in such a hurry to come up and explain.
As the elevator doors closed, Amelia turned her attention back to Nicole and quietly discussed potential solutions. Stepping out of the elevator, Amelia threw herself entirely into her work.
Frederick started his car to leave when he glanced in the rearview mirror and noticed a bracelet on the back seat. The hospital's rules stipulated that medical personnel could not wear any jewelry, so Amelia would always take off her bracelet and place it in her bag before entering the hospital. She had been checking messages while taking off her bracelet and hadn't noticed it falling onto the seat instead of going into her bag.
Frederick stopped the car, picked up the bracelet from the back seat, and stepped out to return it to Amelia. He'd seen her wearing this bracelet many times and figured she must be quite fond of it.
As he entered the hospital, he saw Mina supporting a standing Amber in the hospital lobby. Amelia stood calmly in the elevator, listening to someone next to her. She was composed, clearly unbothered by Amber's presence. This made Frederick feel unexpectedly agitated.
Amber bit her lip. "Frederick..."
"Did you bring Ms. Davis to the hospital?"
Frederick glanced at her. His gaze remained neutral. "Why did you come downstairs?"
Amber replied submissively, "Ms. Davis said I could start moving around a bit after laying in bed for so long. If I stay lying down, I could develop adhesions in my uterus that may prevent me from having children in the future."
Frederick just nodded slightly and glanced at his phone. "I'm off to the office, you get some rest."
He spoke emotionlessly and walked away. Amber noticed the bracelet in his hand and quickly said, "Frederick, is that Ms. Davis's bracelet?
"I can give it to Ms. Davis for you."
Frederick looked at the bracelet in his hand with a cold attitude before pocketing it into his pants. "No need."
With that, he walked away briskly. Amber clenched her teeth as she watched Frederick's retreating figure.
Mina stood quietly, supporting Amber. Noticing Amber's poor complexion, Mina spoke with some trepidation, "Ms. Roberts, shall I help you back to your room?"
Amber let out a small grunt of acknowledgment.
Ever since Amelia had entered the office, she had been bustling with activity. There had been an influx of patients recently, and she was assigned to several new cases. After organizing all of her patient files, Amelia finally took a moment to breathe and sat down in her office to take a sip of water.
Just as she set down her cup, Amber, with the assistance of Mina, made her way to the door.
"Ms. Davis."
Amelia raised her eyebrows slightly. "Please, take a seat."
Amber slowly moved and settled into a chair.
Once seated, Amber immediately turned to Mina and said, "Mina, I would like to have a word with Ms. Davis alone."
Upon hearing this, Mina nodded and promptly left.
Amelia, unfazed, continued to go through her files as Amber watched her silently for a while before speaking up.
"Ms. Davis, I saw you getting out of Frederick's car this morning. Did Brittany ask Frederick to pick you up?"
Amelia paused in her work and looked up at Amber. "Mr. Hastings didn't explain to you?"
There was a moment of hesitation before Amber replied softly, "Frederick did explain, but I'm not sure I believe him, so I wanted to ask you."
Amelia raised an eyebrow. "You don't trust him, but you trust me? Aren't you afraid I might stir up trouble, Ms. Roberts?"
Amber seemed hesitant. "It's not that I don't trust him entirely. It's just... I wanted to hear what you have to say, Ms. Davis."
Amelia took out a patient's file and placed it on the desk, tapping it lightly with her finger.
"Ms. Roberts, I'm very busy. If there's no issue with your health, could you please not disturb me for now?" she said, her voice gentle yet firm, brooking no argument.
Amber felt embarrassed and apologized in a low voice, "I'm sorry, Ms. Davis. That was presumptuous of me."
She got up from her chair and walked out of Amelia's office at a slow pace.
Amelia watched her leave, sitting in her chair for a while before diving back into her work.
Amber did not bother Amelia about Frederick's matter again. At the end of her shift, Amelia made her rounds. Entering Amber's room, she greeted her with the usual warmth.
"Ms. Davis."
Amelia nodded and gave Amber a few instructions. As she prepared to leave, she noticed Frederick emerging from the restroom.
He had been there all along.
Amelia arched an eyebrow but said nothing, turning to leave.
However, Amber called out to Amelia with a warm and graceful smile.
Ms. Davis, you're about to clock out, aren't you?
"Frederick's leaving too. You rode with him to the hospital this morning because you didn't drive. Luckily, you can catch a ride with him now."
Frederick stood by the restroom door, glancing over at Amber upon hearing her voice.
With a soft chuckle, Amber seriously said, "Frederick, do you find this bothersome?"
Amelia observed the interaction between them without getting upset and firmly declined, "No need.
Someone's picking me up."
Since Daniel and Kenneth were somewhat acquainted, Daniel invited Kenneth and Rachel to dinner, hoping to settle a land dispute on the west side of town.
Kenneth was famously known in Kasfee as a ladies' man and had always shown an interest in Rachel.
Amelia was a little worried and decided to join them.
