Chapter 379 Rachel Is Not to Be Messed With
Rachel narrowed her eyes slightly, a cold smile gracing her lips as she scrutinized Sebastian. "How do you know it was Kenneth?" she asked.
Last night, when Rachel realized she had been drugged, she didn't return to the private room. So when she left, no one should have noticed she had been drugged. Charles only found her when he heard her voice while she was waiting for Tina in the restroom.
Earlier at the conference, she also saw Elbert, who was completely unaware of what had happened the previous night. He thought she had left early because she drank too much and wasn't feeling well.
Since their breakup, Sebastian had repeatedly shattered her perceptions. When Sebastian saw Rachel's sharp gaze fixed on him, his expression changed slightly. He realized that Rachel wasn't here for idle talk; she was navigating his emotions, leading him to speak and reveal himself. Desperation to clear his name had landed him directly into her trap.
He took a deep breath, his face stiffening slightly. "I'm not entirely sure if it was him," he began cautiously, his voice lacking the previous conviction. "But it could also be Charles, couldn't it?"
Sebastian knew Rachel had a good impression of Charles. Despite Charles being Layla's stepson and falling outside of her selection range, the fact that he had taken Rachel away the previous night raised uncertainty in Sebastian's mind. The possibility of something developing between them left him feeling threatened by Charles's presence.
However, instead of casting doubt in Rachel's mind, Sebastian's attempt to implicate Charles only fueled her disgust. Reflecting on the events of the previous night, Sebastian and Kenneth emerged as the primary suspects based on their behavior and actions. Kenneth had left midway, and Sebastian had also left the private room to take a phone call. This led her to suspect both Kenneth and Sebastian.
Sebastian knew some of her habits, and Kenneth was a shareholder of the restaurant they were at last night. "So, when you went out to take a call, did you see Kenneth drugging my drink?" She asked, her voice sharp.
No wonder Charles saw Sebastian chasing after them when he drove her away last night. Sebastian felt like a criminal stripped bare in front of Rachel, awaiting her judgment. He gritted his teeth tightly and suddenly raised his hand, slapping himself hard across the face.
Rachel watched his actions, her beautiful eyebrows furrowing involuntarily. The slap was so forceful that the crisp sound echoed in the air. Rachel paused for a moment, then saw a clear handprint appear on Sebastian's face.
A gasp came from the doorway of the back hall. Rachel turned to see several women standing there, looking at her with a mix of fear and shock. When they saw Rachel turn toward them, they immediately retreated, afraid she would retaliate.
Rachel's eyes cooled, and she glanced indifferently at Sebastian. However, Sebastian slapped himself again. Those women who had just left could hear it, and their pace quickened significantly.
Rachel was indeed not to be trifled with. Such loud slaps—was she going to ruin Sebastian's face? Even after leaving the back hall, those women were still shaken but couldn't help gossiping about the incident.
One woman said, "Mr. Kingsley didn't do anything unforgivable, did he? Ms. Davis was so harsh."
One woman interjected, "I heard Mr. Kingsley was just showing pity to a woman with a child, and Ms. Davis treated him like that."
Another woman couldn't help but say, "Ms. Davis's possessiveness is too strong. Being with her, do you have to become as heartless as she is?"
One woman sighed. "Poor Mr. Kingsley. When we left, the slaps kept coming. Who knows how many times she slapped him?"
They summarized. "She probably doesn't even see Mr. Kingsley as a person, treating him like a dog!"
In the back hall, only Sebastian and Rachel remained, and the slaps echoed in the space.
They had intended to sneak into the back hall for a break but unexpectedly witnessed such a scene. They hadn't actually seen Rachel slapping him; they just instinctively assumed that Rachel must have been involved in such a situation.
Felix, overhearing their conversation, quickly went to find Amelia and Frederick.
When Frederick and Amelia arrived at the back hall, the sound of slapping was still echoing. Rachel stood expressionless in front of Sebastian, watching him slap his face.
She had no intention of stopping him; in fact, she seemed quite interested. His self-abuse, unable to explain himself, once again shattered her perception of him.
Frederick and Amelia hurried in. Frederick saw Sebastian slapping his face and grabbed his hand. He snapped. "What are you doing?"
Amelia walked over to Rachel, pulling her hand to keep some distance between her and Sebastian. She checked Rachel's hand, and Rachel immediately understood Amelia's concern, chuckling softly. "Don't worry, I didn't hit him. My hand doesn't hurt."
She did not desire to dirty her hands by hitting Sebastian. Amelia saw that Rachel's hand wasn't red at all, and it did not look like she had hit anyone.
Sebastian didn't answer Frederick. He shook off Frederick's grip and continued to slap his face. Rachel glanced at him and sneered. "Mr. Kingsley, what are you trying to do? Are you planning to make everyone think I abused you when you go out later?"
Sebastian frowned at Rachel's words, stopping his actions. He looked at Rachel and explained, "I'm apologizing for what happened last night."
Rachel laughed coldly, withdrawing her gaze from Sebastian. "No need for an apology. I have no intention of blaming you. After all, it's not the first time you've shattered my perception of you."
Rachel cast a fleeting glance at Amelia and spoke softly, "Let's give Mr. Kingsley some space to calm down."
Amelia nodded and followed Rachel out of the back hall. Once outside, Amelia quickly took her sister's arm and asked, "What happened last night?"
Rachel raised an eyebrow slightly. "Frederick didn't tell you?"
This morning, on the way to the conference with Charles, he mentioned that Frederick had called him many times last night. Given Frederick's current efforts to impress Amelia, if he knew, Amelia would certainly know too. So when Rachel saw Amelia today, she thought Amelia hadn't mentioned it to avoid making her feel awkward.
Rachel hadn't expected Frederick to have told Amelia. Amelia paused, recalling how Frederick had suddenly gotten up to take a call in the middle of the night and gone to the study, her expression tense. "No."
Rachel heard this and smiled faintly. "If he didn't tell you, then forget it. It wasn't anything good."
Amelia's expression grew heavy. Seeing Sebastian's behavior, I believe that last night's incident must have been serious. Yet Rachel was speaking to her in such a light tone, which only made Amelia more worried.
Rachel and Amelia walked out of the back hall together. Before they even reached the front hall, they heard people talking.
One woman complained. "Ms. Davis is so overpowering. As a woman, treating Mr. Kingsley like that, trampling on his dignity—no man could stand it."
Another woman chimed in. "Yeah, when we went to the back hall earlier, the slapping was so loud. Ms. Davis must have been hitting him really hard."
Hearing this, Amelia looked displeased and wanted to rush over to defend Rachel. However, Rachel stepped forward first, entering the front hall and addressing the gossiping women. "Daring to talk behind my back, I want to see which families you all belong to."
The women were startled by Rachel's voice, quickly covering their faces with their hands and scattering. Rachel was clearly angry, and they didn't dare to offend her truly.
