Chapter 9 How Much Did You Drink
Amelia quietly looked at Amber's hopeful face and replied, "That's false."
Amber looked disappointed, her expression shifting subtlety as she gazed at Amelia.
"Then... after the surgery, will it be difficult for me to conceive?"
Her voice trembled, and she looked utterly pitiable.
If she were an ordinary patient, Amelia would have comforted her, but Amber was her rival.
Amelia looked at her calmly and said indifferently, "Nothing is absolute. So, Ms. Roberts, you should be mentally prepared."
After saying that, she walked past Amber. She thought to herself, "I'm really not a good doctor."
Amber couldn't help but cry. She grabbed Amelia's arm and asked softly, "Ms. Davis, do you not like me very much?"
She had finally noticed.
Amelia stopped in her tracks and looked at Amber. She forced a fake smile. "Of course not. Ms. Roberts, you're my patient. As a doctor, I naturally care a lot about my patients.
"However, I will certainly do my best to save your uterus so you and Mr. Hastings have a chance to nurture a baby."
Amber looked hesitant. She watched Amelia carefully, clearly not believing her words.
Frederick couldn't find Amber in her hospital room. He went over to Amelia's office, where he overheard a conversation.
Seeing Amelia's radiant smile, Frederick felt displeased. An inexplicable anger began to simmer within him, and consequently, the look he gave her turned colder.
Amelia pursed her lips. As she spotted Frederick's figure, she let out a small smile and gently removed her hand from Amber's arm.
"Ms. Roberts, I'm very busy. If you don't have anything else, please don't bother me. Go pester your lover instead."
Following Amelia's gaze, Amber turned and saw Frederick not far behind her. She offered a coquettish smile, walked over to his side, and affectionately looped her arm through his.
"Weren't you busy with company matters? How come you’re here so early?"
Frederick shifted his gaze from Amelia and looked down at Amber, who seemed to be relying on him. He sensed a subtle emotion within himself.
"I was worried you might be bored, so I postponed a last-minute meeting."
Amber was touched. "Even though I'm a bit bored in the hospital, I still hope you handle your work first before coming to keep me company.
"Your grandmother already disapproves of us being together. I'm worried if she finds out about this, she'll blame me and stop us from being with each other."
Amber spoke gently, her words revealing her sense of loss.
"It won't happen."
As Frederick lifted his eyes, he saw Amelia walking back to the hospital room. Throughout the exchange, she hadn't given them an extra glance.
Her indifferent attitude suddenly made him realize that her ultimate goal in maintaining this marriage was just for the sake of the Davis Group. And he was merely someone who provided her with assistance.
Frederick felt a surge of anger and discontent as he gazed toward Amelia's office.
Amber noticed the change in his mood and looked up at him, her hand by her side tightening slightly.
"Frederick, what's wrong?"
He shifted his gaze back and replied, "I'll take you back to your room."
Amber didn't ask any further, obediently following him to her room. As she bowed her head, her eyes took on a sinister look.
Brittany was uncomfortable staying in the hospital and was eager to get discharged.
After wrapping up her work, Amelia went to take Brittany back to Hastings Manor.
Supporting Brittany by the hand, the two of them chatted and laughed as they walked out of the elevator. Just as they stepped out, Brittany paused in her tracks.
Amelia was perplexed. Following Brittany's gaze, she saw Amber with one hand looped through Frederick's arm and the other holding an apple. Amber strolled along, taking bites from the fruit, looking utterly relaxed and at ease.
"Frederick!" Brittany's voice brimmed with immediate anger.
Amber paused, the apple in her hand forgotten. Feeling flustered, she hurriedly tossed the apple into a nearby trash can.
"Mrs. Brittany." Amber's voice quivered, her expression distant and worried.
Brittany's eyes flashed with fury upon seeing Amber's tight grip on Frederick's arm.
"You shameless woman, do you have any idea that he's married?" she spat out.
Amber's face paled, her body rigid as she stood there, staring at Frederick in disbelief. She was utterly confused.
"You're married?" The words slipped out in a sob, her tears falling like pearls from her eyes.
Frederick offered no response. His brows clenched together.
Amelia stood quietly beside Brittany, glancing up at him. Sure enough, Frederick's sharp, cold gaze fell upon her. His expression was one of contempt as if accusing Amelia of being scheming. Clearly, he believed this chance meeting had been orchestrated by her.
"Go upstairs," he commanded, removing Amber's hand from his arm, his tone gentle yet firm.
Amber, however, didn't want to leave, her teary eyes fixed on Frederick, her sense of injustice evident.
"Frederick, are you really married?" Her complexion was ghostly. She still wore her hospital gown and looked frail, as though she might faint at any moment.
Brittany was visibly upset, but Amelia cut her off before she could speak further.
"Brittany, there are too many people around. It's not good to cause a scene."
Brittany, who always cared about her reputation, saw the bustling hospital, put on a stern face, and then shot Frederick a glare.
"Come home with me now," she ordered. Amelia then helped her leave the hospital.
Once outside, Amelia breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, in the heat of the moment, Brittany hadn't disclosed her marital status to Frederick, something that would have surely spread through the hospital gossip mill by the next morning. Amelia didn't want to become the subject of everyone's chatter when she returned the next day.
She helped Brittany into the car, but Frederick didn't appear from the hospital right away.
Amelia withdrew her gaze from the window, her voice gentle as she soothed Brittany's emotions.
"Brittany, let's head back. I trust Frederick will handle it," Amelia said with a sense of unwavering confidence.
Brittany let out a sigh, her tone infused with reproach, "You have too much faith in him, and that's exactly why Amber feels bold enough to confront you like this!"
Amelia fell into silence.
After waiting for a few minutes and with no sign of Frederick, Brittany's face was a mask of frost as she instructed the driver to take them home.
They had been back at the Hastings Manor for half an hour when Frederick finally returned from the hospital.
He seemed calm, his gaze no longer as piercing as it had been earlier at the hospital. Clearly, he had managed to soothe Amber's emotions, which allowed him to relax.
Amelia averted her eyes from him, her thoughts tinged with self-deprecation. "Such enviable love," she thought.
