Chapter 388 I Don't Want to Resign
Arnold's words were on the tip of his tongue, but he fell silent.
Charles noticed the fleeting look of conflict and discomfort in Arnold's eyes when he glanced at Rachel, so he asked politely, "Mr. Sanders, is there something on your mind?"
Arnold had a brief conversation with Charles earlier today. At the conference, Arnold had been trying to find opportunities to approach Rachel, and Charles had taken note of all his actions.
Rachel was currently single. Many prominent families in the area were aware of Rachel's capabilities. Since she had no brothers and only a sister who was not in the business world, the Davis family and the Davis Group were entirely in Rachel's hands.
Not only did these prominent families want Rachel to marry into them, but many individuals with modest backgrounds and some ambition also hoped to marry her. After all, marrying Rachel was equivalent to marrying the entire Davis Group. Who wouldn't want such a deal?
Charles scrutinized Arnold with a discerning look. Arnold seemed to be from one of those prominent families and he appeared to have some affection for Rachel. Also, he had plans to bring the Davis Group under the Sanders family in the future. Many families had similar intentions.
Arnold noticed Charles's probing gaze. Although Charles's glance wasn't particularly aggressive, Arnold felt as if Charles was trying to see right through him. For some reason, Arnold's courage diminished significantly and he could not meet Charles's gaze.
"Nothing," he replied with a polite smile, maintaining an outward calmness as he softly responded to Charles.
Just then, Rachel finished her call and looked up at Charles, her tone much friendlier than before. "Tina is here."
Charles nodded. Rachel put away her phone as she spoke. Tina soon drove out from the underground garage.
Rachel beckoned Charles over. Before getting into the car, she looked at Arnold and politely said, "Mr. Sanders, I need to head back for a bit. See you later."
Arnold smiled and nodded, "Alright, see you later."
Rachel acknowledged him with a nod and turned to get into the car, only to see Charles standing at the door, waiting for her like a gentleman. He smiled as she looked at him. "Ladies first."
Rachel bent down and got into the car. Charles followed suit. After Charles got in, Tina closed the car door.
Tina noticed Arnold still standing there watching them and respectfully nodded to him as a greeting before heading to the driver's seat and driving away.
Shirley was sitting in the front passenger seat, and seeing her brother standing next to Rachel made her want to scream. She thought, 'They are just too perfect together.'
However, once Charles got into the car, Shirley didn't dare make a sound and remained so quiet that it seemed as though she was barely breathing.
After getting into the car, Rachel glanced at Shirley in the front seat and said calmly, "Ms. Wright, aren't you going to greet your brother?"
Shirley, hearing Rachel addressing her so candidly, awkwardly turned her head to look toward the back seat. She murmured, "Charles, are you here for the conference too?"
Charles was already aware of the car accident that Shirley had previously caused with her distracted driving. Since then, Shirley hadn't dared to call him.
At today's conference, Charles hadn't seen her and thought that even if Rachel hadn't fired her, she might have been reassigned to another position. Unexpectedly, Rachel still brought her to the conference.
Charles glanced at her and said calmly, "Since you were here for the conference, why didn't you come up?"
Shirley felt guilty hearing Charles's words. She didn't dare to face Layla or Charles. She found an excuse and replied, "I wasn't feeling very well, so I stayed in the car. By the time I felt well enough to go up, the conference was already over."
Charles glanced at her, clearly not believing her.
Shirley, feeling guilty, squirmed in the front seat. Rachel quietly listened to the conversation between Charles and Shirley, her expression indifferent and stoic.
When they arrived at her place, Shirley was the first to open the car door and get out, respectfully opening the door for Rachel. "Ms. Davis, please take your time," she said.
Seeing Shirley's guilty expression, Rachel said calmly, "You can head back to the office first."
Shirley, realizing that Rachel had seen through her thoughts, was delighted and quickly agreed, "Yes, Ms. Davis."
As Charles got out of the car, he glanced at Shirley again. He advised her, "If you're going to stay by Ms. Davis's side, you need to be diligent in everything, no matter how small the task. You can't make any mistakes."
Shirley, realizing she couldn't escape a lecture from her brother even as she was about to leave, looked downcast as she replied dejectedly, "I understand."
Seeing Charles and Shirley talking, Rachel sensibly walked to the elevator to wait.
As Rachel headed toward the elevator, Shirley leaned closer to her brother and whispered urgently, "Charles, you should hurry. Ms. Davis is about to get in the elevator."
Charles glanced in Rachel's direction and started walking toward her. But after a couple of steps, he stopped and turned back to Shirley, his tone serious. "Prepare to resign from the Davis Group."
Shirley looked shocked.
"Why?" she asked. "Charles, haven't I been doing well? I admit I made a mistake before, but Ms. Davis has already forgiven me. Besides, you haven't won her over yet. I can definitely help you if I stay by her side."
Seeing Shirley's earnest expression, Charles realized she had no intention of leaving the Davis Group. His narrowed his eyes as he looked at her intently. "Your mother has come to Kasfee, and she and Nancy might plan to stay and develop their business here."
Nancy's company was in a similar line of business to Rachel's. If they developed locally, they would become competitors on the same track as Rachel. Shirley, being Layla's daughter, couldn't escape the bond of blood, even if she wasn't the favored child.
Shirley understood the implication of Charles's words. However, she was starting to get comfortable with working by Rachel's side. She felt respected at the Davis Group.
Taking a deep breath, Shirley looked at Charles meekly, murmuring, "But Charles, I don't want to resign."
With Layla, Shirley was a nobody, but at the Davis Group, Rachel had precisely utilized her strengths, and her colleagues recognized her merits.
Shirley had gained respect at the Davis Group and didn't want to return to being a nobody by Layla's side, nor a mere accessory to Nancy.
