Chapter 490 Propose to Me
Frederick held her waist tight, and they were so close that Amelia could feel his desire.
Her cheeks heated up, and after a moment's hesitation, she pushed him away. He stepped back, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
In the dining room, Brittany and Anna were waiting. Mary stood nearby, looking puzzled. "Why haven't Mr. and Mrs. Hastings come back yet?" she wondered.
Tom, who was adding food to Anna's plate, watched as she took a bite. Without missing a beat, Anna looked up at Mary with wide eyes. "Maybe Daddy and Mommy are hiding to kiss," she said innocently, making everyone chuckle.
Frederick and Amelia had just reached the dining room door when they heard Anna's words.
Amelia's face turned red immediately. Standing behind Frederick, she couldn't help but pinch his back. She thought, 'It's all your fault for leading her to speak out of turn.'
Frederick endured the pain and reached out to pull Amelia from behind him, letting her sit first.
After Amelia sat down, Brittany smiled, picked up the utensils on the table, and signaled Amelia to eat.
Amelia nodded lightly and picked up the fork. When she saw Mary and Tom smiling at her, her ears turned even redder.
After dinner, Frederick was still reluctant to leave the Hastings Manor.
Amelia meticulously instructed Tom about Brittany's dietary restrictions and health guidelines.
Frederick, sitting close, kept playing with her hand or resting his arm around her waist, as if needing constant physical reassurance.
When Tom had finished noting everything, Amelia turned to Frederick. "You should go now," she said softly but firmly.
Hearing her words, Frederick felt a bit sad. "I don't want to go," he muttered.
Amelia rubbed her temples and sighed slightly, "If you don't leave now, with Nancy's cautious nature, it might take even longer for her to make a move. Are you sure you want us to keep living like this?"
Frederick's blue eyes darkened, staring at Amelia for a long time without getting up.
Amelia looked at him and added calmly, "We just need to endure for a while."
Tom wisely left the living room, giving space to them.
Frederick rubbed his temples, looking at Amelia's calm demeanor, and couldn't help but think of the time when Amelia had just returned to the country.
He muttered, "Sometimes I wonder if you're using this situation as an excuse to break up with me for real."
His blunt confession caught Amelia off guard. She hadn't realized just how much he was struggling. It was like their time apart had planted deeper insecurities in both of them.
Just then, Anna, sensing the tension, ran over and jumped into Frederick's lap. She promptly covered his mouth with her tiny hand to stop him from speaking.
Amelia was momentarily stunned by the vulnerability in Frederick's eyes. She had always thought she was the more insecure one in their relationship. After all, she wasn't in the business world, and if the Hastings Group had any issues in the future, she might not be able to offer him good advice or help like Nancy.
But seeing him like this made her realize that their separation had impacted them both deeply.
Frederick hugged Anna tightly, managing his emotions. "I won't say anything, I promise," he whispered to her, his tone soothing.
Anna, satisfied, let go and wagged her finger at him. "Daddy can't argue with Mommy," she declared sternly.
Frederick nodded solemnly. He cuddled Anna for a bit longer before transferring her back to Amelia. "I'm leaving now," he said quietly, the weight of reluctance in every word.
"Okay," Amelia replied, her tone steady but soft.
Seeing her agree so readily, Frederick felt even more blocked inside.
Noticing his visibly sad expression, Amelia softly added, "Drive safely."
Frederick nodded, bent down, and kissed Anna on the cheek. He said gently, "I'm leaving, sweetie."
Anna nodded.
Frederick glanced at Amelia, resisted the urge to kiss her, and got up to leave.
Just then, Amelia grabbed his tie. "You're not gonna kiss me before you go?" she asked, looking at his lips.
Frederick sighed, his resolve crumbling. He bent down, kissing the corner of her lips lightly. Amelia smiled, and this simple gesture lifted his spirits.
Then he said in a deep voice, "I'm leaving."
Amelia nodded.
Seeing her smiling eyes, Frederick took a deep breath and turned to leave.
Amelia watched him go, her expression inscrutable. She turned to Anna on the sofa. "Anna, wait here for a moment. I need to talk to your daddy."
As Amelia caught up to Frederick, who had just reached the yard, she suddenly bumped into him from behind, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Frederick, stunned, turned to pull her into a tight embrace. "What's wrong? Can't bear to see me go?" he whispered.
Amelia looked up at him, their eyes locking. He could see his reflection in her eyes, and his heart swelled.
Standing on tiptoe, she kissed his Adam's apple. "When this is over," she whispered, "propose to me, and make sure it's a proper ceremony."
