Chapter 441 You Never Really Cared About Me
Layla locked eyes with Vincent, her smile not quite reaching the reproach in her gaze.
Amelia darkened her mood as she caught the arrogance in Layla's eyes. She couldn't understand where Layla got the nerve to treat Vincent who raised her and her sister alone so disrespectfully.
Compared to Vincent, Layla hadn't done squat for her.
Layla should be feeling guilty and awkward around Vincent.
But nope, Amelia saw zero shame in Layla's eyes.
Amelia's brows knitted together as she shot Layla a cold look. "He did," she said, her voice icy.
Layla smiled gently at Amelia and reached out to hold her hand, trying to close the gap between them.
But Amelia yanked her hand back, dodging Layla's touch.
Layla's hand hung in the air for a second before she pulled it back, giving Amelia an awkward smile. "Amelia, do you have a problem with me?" she asked softly.
Amelia's cold stare didn't waver. "Dad, you go inside first. I need to talk to her alone," she told Vincent.
She remembered how seeing Layla yesterday had made Vincent feel unwell and didn't want him to spend too much time with her now.
After all, Layla had never shown any remorse for her past actions.
Amelia worried that Vincent would feel even worse after hearing some of the shameless things Layla might say.
Vincent looked at Amelia with concern, while Layla, completely unfazed, said calmly, "Vincent, go inside. After all, I am Amelia's biological mother. No matter what, you shouldn't stop me from reconnecting with her."
Vincent sighed but didn't look at Layla. Instead, he turned to Amelia and said softly, "If you need anything, call me immediately. I'll be inside."
Hearing Vincent's concerned voice, Amelia's lips curled up slightly, and she replied gently, "Dad, don't worry. We're at the Davis Manor entrance. If anything happens, the security personnel will rush out to protect me."
Vincent glanced at the security personnel at the Davis Manor entrance and felt a bit more at ease. Rachel had carefully selected them, and if Layla tried anything, they could indeed protect Amelia.
"Alright, I'll go inside then," he said.
With that, Vincent walked toward the Davis Manor, never lingering his attention on Layla for too long.
Layla watched Vincent's back, a faint smile playing on her lips. She then turned her gaze back to Amelia, speaking softly.
"Amelia, over the years, your dad has had a hard time raising you and your sister alone, so I understand why he doesn't want you to reconnect with me. After all, everyone has a selfish side. But I'm not someone who abandoned her husband and children as your father said. There were reasons for my departure."
Layla instinctively felt that Amelia's cold attitude toward her was because Vincent had said something to her. He might have even mentioned the reasons for her departure.
Now, Layla wanted to mend her relationship with Amelia and needed to explain herself.
Layla continued, "When I left, Rachel was still young and filled with hatred toward me. But over the years, I've never stopped thinking about you both."
Amelia quietly watched Layla, noting every change in her expression. Layla's words felt rehearsed, and even though she spoke with emotion, there was no real longing in her eyes.
The Davis family had never moved. If Layla really missed them, why hadn't she come back?
Amelia thought, 'Good liar.'
Amelia asked calmly, "Ms. Murphy, haven't you been doing well with the Wright family all these years?"
Layla's face flickered with a subtle emotion, clearly not expecting that question.
Her expression stiffened a bit, but she forced a smile. "Of course not," she replied. "I've been doing well with the Wright family."
Layla had left the Davis family on her own. Even though she had constant conflicts with Charles over the years, she wouldn't admit she was doing poorly.
Amelia's eyes were scrutinizing, her gaze indifferent.
Layla raised an eyebrow slightly and asked, "What's wrong?"
Amelia replied coldly, "If you're doing well and have kids with the Wright family, why insist on reconnecting with me? All these years, you've never thought about reconnecting. Now you want to, is it because you see some value in me that you can use?"
Layla hadn't expected Amelia to be so direct. Her expression changed slightly, and she couldn't come up with a response immediately.
Amelia's gaze stayed fixed on her, waiting for an answer.
Layla could only deny it. "No, I just said, I've always missed you and Rachel. This time, I had the opportunity to come back, so I wanted to reconnect."
Amelia's lips curled slightly, her eyes showing a hint of mockery. She didn't respond to Layla; she just quietly watched her.
Layla was stunned for a few seconds, suddenly seeing a shadow of Rachel in Amelia.
At the exchange meeting, Amelia had been protected by Frederick, appearing as a gentle lamb. So when Layla learned that Rachel had gone to Fondaniss, she hurried to the Davis Manor. In her mind, Amelia would be easier to connect with than Rachel.
However, she hadn't expected that Amelia, though seemingly gentle, was no different from Rachel.
Layla felt a bit panicked, looking at Amelia anxiously, trying to prove herself. "Amelia, don't you believe me?" she asked.
Amelia's expression remained calm. She stated, "How can I believe you? You came back just for the exchange meeting and wanted to reconnect because you saw me there. But at the exchange meeting, did you forget your hostility toward me?"
Layla gritted her teeth. At that time, she hadn't immediately recognized Amelia's identity, which was why she had been hostile toward the woman standing next to Frederick.
Layla had always wanted Shirley to marry Frederick, but Shirley had defied her wishes, saying she wanted to work at the Hastings Group, only to secretly join the Davis Group.
Amelia looked at her coldly, with no trace of emotion in her eyes. She said icily, "Ms. Murphy, if you want me to believe you, you need to provide evidence. All these years, you've never paid attention to me. You didn't even recognize me at the exchange meeting. Now you said you were missing me all the time, isn't it ridiculous?"
