Chapter 454 It's My Job

That night, Amelia had a bunch of dreams, mostly about Frederick. When she woke up, she felt even worse.

After getting Anna dressed, she carried her downstairs.

Vincent was sitting in the dining room, waiting for them to come down for breakfast. He looked a bit surprised when he saw Amelia carrying Anna down the stairs.

"Didn't you stay at Frederick's place last night?" Vincent asked. Amelia had gone out for an appointment yesterday and hadn't come back for a long time, so he figured she had stayed at Frederick's place.

"No," Amelia replied softly, putting Anna in her high chair.

Anna yawned, her eyes a bit puffy from crying the night before. Even though she was young, she still cared a lot about how she looked. So when she saw her puffy eyes while brushing her teeth in the morning, her little face fell, and she grumbled, "I'll never cry again. Never cry again."

Amelia couldn't help but smile at her adorable attitude, which lifted her spirits a bit.

Vincent noticed that Amelia didn't seem too eager to talk about Frederick. He had some guesses but didn't ask her in front of Anna.

He said, "Rachel's flight gets in at ten. If we leave after breakfast, we'll get there just in time to pick her up."

Amelia nodded, feeling a bit more relaxed at the thought of Rachel coming home. After breakfast, they headed to the airport. When the driver went to the garage to get the car, he noticed one was missing and casually asked, "Ms. Davis, didn't you bring the car back last night?"

Amelia replied calmly, "Yeah, I drank last night and couldn't drive, so I left the car at the hotel."

The driver respectfully said, "I have some free time at noon. Ms. Davis, if you give me the address, I can go pick up the car."

Amelia nodded, "Okay. I'll give you the address later."

Since Vincent was in the car, Amelia couldn't explain the reason to the driver.

The driver, having received Amelia's response, didn't continue the topic.

At the airport, Amelia, holding Anna, saw Rachel in a black trench coat pulling her luggage out of the airport from a distance. Tina was also carrying two suitcases.

When Anna saw Rachel, she immediately stretched out her arms toward her. "Aunt Rachel, hug me," she said sweetly.

Anna knew that Rachel always brought her gifts when she came back from a trip, so she was always super excited about Rachel's return, wanting to cling to her.

Rachel reached out and picked up Anna. The driver sensibly helped Rachel with her luggage.

"Nothing serious happened while I was away, right?" Rachel asked. Her trip hadn't gone smoothly, but she didn't show any stress in front of her family.

Amelia answered softly, "Nothing special except for the issue with Frederick."

Rachel, hearing her words, didn't elaborate in front of Anna. "My departure was terribly ill-timed. Thank you for bearing the burden during this period."

Amelia's eyes reddened slightly, but she composed herself and said softly, "It wasn't hard at all. I didn't really do much."

Rachel, seeing Amelia's evasive eyes, knew something was up. They had grown up together, and none of Amelia's subtle actions could escape Rachel's notice.

Rachel's eyes darkened slightly, but with Anna in her arms, she kept her cool and said softly, "Let's talk when we get home."

Amelia nodded. After they got into the car, Vincent's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID; it was Susan. He answered, "What's up?"

Susan's hesitant voice came through. "Ms. Murphy is here again. I told her you were out, but she still insists on waiting at the door."

Vincent frowned and said coldly, "Tell security to..."

Before he could finish, Rachel took the phone and said indifferently, "Invite her inside. You didn't tell her I was back, did you?"

Susan was momentarily stunned but quickly replied, "No, I just said you were out."

Rachel responded, "Good."

Hearing Rachel's calm voice, Susan felt reassured and said, "Ms. Rachel Davis, I'll invite her inside right away."

"Okay," Rachel said before hanging up. Then she handed the phone back to Vincent.

Vincent frowned and said in a deep voice, "Why bother with her? Just send her away."

Rachel smiled slightly. "I want to see what she wants." As she spoke, she glanced at Amelia. "You know everything, right?"

Amelia nodded lightly. "Yes."

Layla was their mother, and Shirley and Nancy were their half-sisters.

Seeing Amelia's calm and unperturbed eyes, Rachel felt slightly relieved. When Amelia was young, she had always been desperate for a mother. Many people with ulterior motives wanted to approach Vincent by first getting close to Amelia.

But Vincent had long given up on marriage, fearing that a new wife might mistreat Amelia and Rachel, so he never remarried.

Moreover, Susan had taken care of them meticulously over the years, so Amelia's obsession with having a mother gradually faded.

After their conversation that day, Amelia even felt that Layla had tarnished the title of "mother."

Throughout the journey, Amelia didn't say much. Rachel could tell that Amelia had something on her mind.

On the other side, Layla sat in the living room of the Davis Manor, her eyes scanning the surroundings. Frowning, she remarked, "After all these years, the Davis Manor hasn't changed a bit. The Davis family must not be short of money. Why haven't you thought about moving to a new place all these years?"

Susan placed a glass of water on the table in front of Layla and didn't respond to her comments.

Layla then turned her gaze to Susan and said with a smile, "I thought you would have left the Davis family long ago. I didn't expect you to still be here. Amelia and Rachel grew up under your care. It must have been hard for you all these years."

Susan replied calmly, "Ms. Murphy, you're too kind. This is merely part of my job."

Layla chuckled, "Well, yes, after all, you're a nanny hired by the Davis family. This is what you're supposed to do."
