Chapter 43 Amelia is a Dispensable Person

Watching the woman walking ahead of him, Frederick's eyes held a hint of coldness. He felt that recently, Amelia had become like a hedgehog covered in spikes.

Frederick considered that it might be because she had spent a few days with Rachel, and her personality was becoming similar to hers.

Narrowing his eyes, he suddenly didn't want Amelia to continue staying at Rachel's place.

Once inside, the butler immediately went to inform Vincent.

Vincent came out cheerfully to greet them.
"Frederick, you went to the hospital to pick up Amelia, didn't you? Seeing how stable your relationship is now really warms my heart," Vincent said as he continued, "Come on in. I made some of your favorite dishes today."

As he spoke, Vincent patted Frederick on the shoulder. He was more excited than seeing Amelia herself.

Amelia looked on with concern. Her gaze settled softly on Frederick.

But Frederick politely responded, "Then I'll have to give them a try."

During dinner, Amelia hardly found an opportunity to speak.

Vincent and Frederick were engaged in lively conversation.

Perhaps because of his age, Vincent often enjoyed recounting the great feats of his youth.

Vincent talked continuously while Frederick listened patiently.

Amelia had heard these stories many times before, so it wasn't surprising that she found the conversation a bit dull.

Frederick, however, appeared genuinely interested, which greatly encouraged Vincent's desire to share his tales.

Noticing Amelia's mood, Susan gestured for her to come over.

Amelia stood up and walked across the living room to the yard with her.

Susan stopped in a fitting spot and looked up toward the living room.

Following Susan's gaze, Amelia also looked. Frederick was sitting politely opposite Vincent, nodding in agreement occasionally and, at times, sharing his own thoughts.

Vincent's smile never faded.

Susan paused and then looked away.

"Susan, what's wrong?" Amelia inquired after Susan had been staring at her for several seconds.

"Ms. Davis, I really shouldn't comment on your private matters with Mr. Hastings as an outsider, but I've noticed that Mr. Hastings treats you really well," Susan began. She paused before continuing, "Perhaps your feelings for Mr. Vanderbilt are just remnants of a youthful fondness and regret. It's just that Mr. Vanderbilt's sudden return has magnified those old feelings of yours. I just can't bear to see you make a mistake and miss out on such a good person like Mr. Hastings."

Susan's tone was heavy as if Amelia had already committed some wrongdoing behind Frederick's back.

Amelia was momentarily stunned, falling into a long silence.

Her dealings with Daniel were not close.

Yet she hadn't expected that to lead to misunderstandings by Susan.

With a sigh, Amelia replied, "Susan, Daniel, and I are just friends."

After missing several appointments with Daniel, Amelia felt too embarrassed to ask him to dine with her again.
Fortunately, Daniel didn't care about those issues.

Amelia felt some guilt towards Daniel. After all, he had helped the Johnson family, but they hadn't properly thanked him yet.

Her response seemed to lack persuasion to Susan.

Susan was obviously skeptical.

Amelia massaged her brow, momentarily at a loss for how to clear up Susan's misunderstanding.

"My relationship with Frederick is indeed in trouble, but it's not because of Daniel."

She hadn't finished speaking when Rachel's voice rang out from not too far away.

"Frederick is having an affair."

Shock immediately flitted across Susan's face as her gaze toward Amelia became extremely complicated.

It was filled with both guilt and sorrow. But more importantly, she was worried.

"It's okay, Susan," Amelia said awkwardly. "Please, don't let my father find out about this."

Susan nodded stiffly, looking towards the living room.

Frederick was still conversing with Vincent, and their exchange was harmonious.

The distinguished and elegant aura that Frederick exuded was undeniable.

Susan hadn't expected a man like him to betray his marriage vows, and Frederick's image in her mind started to crumble.

Rachel had just come back from a party. Once she learned Amelia and Frederick were at the Johnson mansion, she rushed over.

It was time for Vincent's medication. Susan glanced at the time and returned to the living room.

"Mr. Johnson, it's time for your medicine."

Susan approached Vincent and gently reminded him.

Frederick also stood up from the couch. "Vincent, Amelia, and I will come to see you another day."

As Frederick's image shattered, Susan felt he was eager to leave.

She even sensed that Frederick had been hoping for her to interrupt their conversation.

Vincent nodded and then saw Rachel standing at the doorway.

"Rachel, is your party over?"

She nodded, "Yes, it is."

Vincent then inquired softly, "Did Sebastian give you any trouble?"

He knew Sebastian was also at the party tonight.

Rachel arched an eyebrow, her expression calm.

How could Sebastian have passed up the opportunity to hassle her?

He had embarrassed her throughout the party.

But during the tough times the Johnson family faced, Rachel had grown accustomed to the ridicule from others.

"No."

Thus, Sebastian's attempts to trouble Rachel seemed insignificant in her eyes.
Vincent chatted with Rachel for a bit more.

After Susan prepared his medication, Vincent swallowed it and then stood up from the couch, waving at them.

"Y'all head back now. I'm gonna rest," he said.

As Vincent tried to see them out, Rachel stopped him.

"Just go on in and rest. We're not kids anymore. You don't have to worry," Rachel insisted.

Vincent patted Rachel on the head with a smile and said, "Your sister's got Frederick looking out for her. I'm not worried about her at all. But you're still unmarried, with no one to watch over you. That worries me."

Upon hearing this, Rachel laughed and replied, "Okay, I'll try to bring a boyfriend home next time."

Vincent raised an eyebrow and asked, "Really?"

"Yes," Rachel affirmed.

Vincent's smile widened so he didn't follow them out.

The trio left the Davis Manor.

Rachel's chauffeur immediately started the car.

Amelia followed alongside Rachel and got straight into the car.

Frederick didn't hold her back.

As Amelia got into the vehicle, Rachel glanced at Frederick, who was heading toward his own car, with a serious expression.

"Mr. Hastings, we're leaving now," she announced.

Rachel had always called Frederick by his first name naturally. Noticing the sudden change in address halted Frederick's step for a moment.

But he quickly regained his composure, gave a slight nod, and said, "Goodbye."

Rachel's gaze turned icy, and she immediately instructed the driver to take off.

She was irked by Frederick's nonchalant attitude as if he believed Amelia was expendable.
