Chapter 399 Then You Two Carry On
Amelia lightly pressed her lips together, withdrew her gaze from Frederick, and looked out the window. A hint of hesitation flashed in her eyes before she responded truthfully.
"Yes, I came back because I heard about your engagement."
Frederick's breath hitched, and he tightened his hold on Amelia, his voice hoarse. "I know." He knew that he always had a place in Amelia's heart.
Amelia responded with a gentle hum, saying no more. After all they had been through, it was nice that she and Frederick hadn't drifted apart.
Amelia rested her head on Frederick's shoulder and murmured, "Do your best, Mr. Hastings." Her voice was soft, with a hint of admonishment.
Frederick's thin lips curved slightly as he looked down at Anna in his arms and Amelia leaning on his shoulder, feeling a surge of emotion. "I won't let you down." He spoke as he kissed Amelia's forehead.
Amelia smiled faintly, feeling an inexplicable sense of peace deep inside.
The short vacation ended, and it was time to get back to work.
Amelia heard some noise from inside the house and thought Anna had woken up. She groggily opened her eyes and saw Frederick, dressed in a black suit, sitting by her bed, brushing Anna's hair.
Anna was lazily leaning against Frederick, yawning.
Frederick's movements were not very skillful, but it was clear he was being very careful, afraid of pulling Anna's hair too hard.
Amelia found his awkward actions amusing. She lifted the comforter, moved to Frederick's side, and took the comb from his hand. In just a few strokes, she had Anna's hair neatly combed and tied into a ponytail.
"All done," she said softly. Anna raised her little hand to touch her ponytail and immediately smiled sweetly. "Mommy is amazing. Uncle Frederick is clumsy."
Frederick had been trying to comb Anna's hair for a while but hadn't succeeded. Although Anna had initially been full of energy, since Frederick couldn't get her hair right, she had started to feel sleepy, leaning against him.
"Ungrateful girl," Frederick chuckled, tickling her. Anna's laughter filled the room.
Amelia watched their interaction, smiling, and asked Frederick, "When did you get here?" She was usually a light sleeper but hadn't noticed when Frederick had come into her room this time.
Frederick stopped playing with Anna, bent down to pick up her slippers, and replied to Amelia while helping Anna put them on. "Just a little while ago."
He had planned to come upstairs to see if Amelia needed any help. After all, she had to dress Anna and get herself ready in the morning. But when he entered the room, he saw that Anna was already awake.
Anna was sitting quietly on her little bed, playing with her toys. When she saw him come in, her eyes sparkled with unbridled joy, and she held her arms out for a hug.
Anna's demeanor made Frederick's heartache. He had missed so much of her growing up as a father.
Amelia raised an eyebrow slightly. Frederick had stayed at the Davis Manor until late last night after bringing her and Anna back.
When they returned, Vincent's friends were still there. Frederick had rarely sat down with Vincent's friends to chat and drink.
It wasn't until Anna got sleepy that Frederick reluctantly left.
He had come to the Davis Manor so early today, probably not having rested well after spending most of his time on the road.
Amelia worried that this continuing with this routine in the long-term would affect Frederick's well-being.
Susan's voice came from outside the bedroom. "Mr. Hastings, Ms. Amelia, breakfast is ready. Mr. Davis asked me to call you downstairs."
Anna immediately responded, her voice crisp and loud. "Coming!" She was always very enthusiastic about breakfast.
After replying to Susan, Anna struggled to get off Frederick's lap. Frederick smiled and put her down.
As soon as Anna's feet touched the ground, she ran out the door on her short legs, holding Susan's hand. She said, "Susan, I'm hungry."
Susan quickly picked her up, smiling. "Oh dear, we can't let our little princess go hungry. I'll take you downstairs for breakfast right away."
Anna and Susan's conversation gradually faded as they proceeded down the hallway.
Amelia looked at Frederick, who was still sitting beside her and gently said, "You don't have to come so early." She stretched as she spoke.
Frederick took the opportunity to wrap his arm around her waist and kiss her on the lips. He teased, "Didn't you tell me to do my best yesterday? I'm here to earn some points."
He tried to deepen the kiss, but Amelia immediately covered her mouth with her hand. She glared at Frederick and grumbled. "I haven't brushed my teeth yet."
Frederick chuckled softly, removed her hand, and kissed her lips again. "I don't mind," he whispered, his large hand cupping Amelia's face, deepening the kiss.
His fingers tangled in Amelia's hair, wrapping it around his fingers, heightening the intimacy between them.
Frederick held Amelia tightly in his arms, the passionate kiss making her body heat up.
Hearing the door open in the next room, Amelia quickly pushed Frederick away and got out of bed in a hurry.
Rachel, already dressed and ready, came out of the next room. Noticing that Amelia's bedroom door was ajar, she called out for Anna. "Anna, are you up? Do you want to go downstairs with me?"
Rachel walked to Amelia's room as she spoke, only to be met with the sight of Frederick sitting by the bed and Amelia looking at her with a flushed face.
"Susan already took Anna downstairs," Amelia muttered.
Rachel nodded, glanced at Frederick, and then turned around. "You two can carry on, then." As she spoke, she closed the bedroom door to give them some privacy.
Amelia's face turned bright red. She wanted to explain the situation, but the door was already closed. She glared at Frederick with resentment.
Frederick chuckled softly, got up from the bed, and placed his broad hand on Amelia's waist again. He began to speak, "I remember you always listen to Rachel. Since Rachel has spoken, then..."
Amelia immediately pressed her finger against Frederick's thin lips, interrupting firmly, "No."
Frederick pulled her closer, bringing her body flush against his. "How can I go downstairs like this?" His voice was hoarse, filled with emotion. Amelia felt his hardness pressing against her.
