Chapter 52 Time Is the Best Remedy
Frederick's hand, holding a drink, paused momentarily as he grunted an acknowledgment, revealing little emotion. "How did you find out?"
His divorce from Amelia hadn't been made public yet, and Vincent wasn't even in the loop.
Sebastian, lounging on the couch with an air of nonchalance, said, "Rachel has been busy with her sister’s paperwork for studying abroad. I heard she's going overseas for further education."
Frederick listened, his expression indifferent.
Amelia had submitted her resignation to General Hospital and could leave any time. Studying abroad was something she had wanted to do for a long time, so Frederick was not surprised.
"She also splurged on a villa in Fondaniss."
Sebastian had a teasing look in his eyes as he mentioned this, directing his gaze towards Frederick.
Scott glanced at Sebastian briefly. "The Davis family, though not what it used to be, can still afford a villa. It's not that unusual."
The Davis family was far from being unable to afford a villa.
Moreover, after the divorce, Amelia would have gotten some of the assets. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary.
Frederick drained his glass in one gulp, noticing Sebastian's odd expression and frowning slightly. "If you've got something to say, say it."
Seeing Frederick's irritation, Sebastian didn't beat around the bush any longer. "Buying a villa isn't unusual."
"What's unusual is that this villa is next to the Vanderbilt family's property in Fondaniss."
The Vanderbilt family.
Frederick's grip on his glass tightened momentarily before he regained his composure.
"How is that unusual?"
Sebastian choked a bit and was speechless.
He found Frederick's lack of concern boring.
Scott nudged him, "What's so unusual about that? Everyone knew Daniel and Amelia were an item back in the day."
"Now that Amelia is divorced, naturally, she'd seek Daniel's embrace."
"Moving far to Fondaniss is for the best—out of sight, out of mind."
"Let's drink!"
Frederick remained impassive throughout the exchange.
Sebastian didn't see the expression he was hoping for, leaving him feeling somewhat disappointed.
After three rounds of drinks, Felix noticed Frederick stepping out of the bar. He walked steadily, showing no sign of drunkenness. Meanwhile, Sebastian had drunk himself into a stupor, leaning on Scott as he muttered complaints about Rachel and Amelia.
"Frederick, I've told you before, those two are trouble," slurred Sebastian. "Don't get caught up like I did, unable to escape."
Frederick listened to Sebastian's rambling with a burgeoning headache. It was as if Sebastian had predicted he would get tangled up in the mess and kept pestering him with warnings.
Felix hurriedly brought the car around to Frederick. Stepping into the vehicle, Frederick heard Sebastian's last words, clutching his hand, "Even though Amelia doesn't want you anymore, don't be sad. You've still got all of us, your good friends."
Frederick's face darkened.
Scott immediately pulled Sebastian's hand back and shoved him into the Kingsley family's car. Felix started the car and drove off, carefully checking the rearview mirror for any trouble.
Frederick felt an incessant irritation and fumbled in his bag for a cigarette, only to find none. He searched the car, and his hand brushed against a bracelet in the corner. Pulling it out, he noticed several diamonds embedded in the bracelet, their luster catching his eye.
"Head to Spring Villa," he said distractedly.
Felix thought he had misheard and quietly asked for confirmation, "Mr. Hastings, are we going to Spring Villa?"
Frederick nodded.
Felix accelerated towards Spring Villa, which was the marital home of Amelia and Frederick. When the Hastings family purchased it, they registered the property in Amelia's name. So, naturally, following their divorce, Amelia ended up with the house.
Amelia had been staying at Rachel's for a few days and hadn't brought many personal items with her when she went there. Since Frederick had already signed the divorce papers, it was certain he wouldn't show up there. After leaving the hospital, Amelia returned to Spring Villa.
Mary, upon seeing Amelia's return, was overjoyed but also felt a pang of sadness because the Hastings Manor had informed her of Amelia's divorce from Frederick.
The Hastings family had told her she could return to work at the Hastings Manor if she wanted, or she could stay at Spring Villa, and her salary would continue to be paid either way. However, Tom had reminded her over the phone that Amelia might not return to live at Spring Villa. So Mary had already packed her things, planning to return to the Hastings Manor.
"Mrs. Hastings, you're back?" Mary greeted her as she entered.
"Have you had dinner yet?" Mary asked with concern.
Amelia shook her head gently, speaking softly, "Not yet, I'll be staying here tonight."
Upon hearing this, Mary nodded promptly, "I'll go and prepare it right away."
Amelia smiled faintly, replying tenderly, "Thank you."
After responding to Mary, Amelia headed upstairs. Her bracelet, which she hadn't been able to find, was on her mind – she wondered if perhaps she had left it at Spring Villa. Entering the bedroom, everything was as she had left it. Clearly, Frederick had not stayed here since she'd departed. His belongings had already been moved out, making it unlikely he would return and, in a way, making things simpler for her.
She walked over to the vanity and began searching for her bracelet. It was of great importance to her, as Vincent had once told her it was something her mother had left for her. Treasured, it was something she had always cherished. Despite looking through all the drawers, the bracelet was not to be found.
Mary had dinner ready, and Amelia, giving up the search, came down to eat. Mary stood quietly to the side, watching Amelia dine. When invited to sit, Mary took a seat gently and began to speak softly.
"Mrs. Hastings, Tom has already informed me about the situation."
"Are you planning not to live at Spring Villa anymore?"
Amelia responded with a soft "Hmm."
"In a little while, I'll be going abroad."
"Did Mrs. Brittany ask you to return to the Hastings Manor?" inquired Mary.
Mary shook her head, "Mrs. Brittany said that if you're not returning to Spring Villa, I could go back to the Hastings Manor. But if you're staying here until you leave the country, of course, I’m to take care of you until then."
Amelia nodded in agreement, "Alright, then, please take care of me until I depart."
Cooking had never been Amelia's forte, and the meals Mary prepared were quite to her liking. After dinner, Amelia took a walk around the yard. Then she went back upstairs, resuming her search for the bracelet in the study, but it was nowhere to be found.
Mary realized her bracelet was lost and joined in the search.
After a fruitless hunt, Amelia gave up.
"Let's stop looking, Mary. You should get some rest."
Perhaps everything was destined, objects and people alike.
She was powerless to change Frederick's feelings for her and just as unable to recover what was lost.
Although she was in pain now, time would be the best medicine.
One day, it would dissolve her sorrow and allow her to let go.
