Chapter 121 She Wants to Make Him Like Her
Calla took a small sip of her red wine, her head lowered. "You've been with Michael for over a decade and never heard about Eloise?"
Margaret took a sorrowful gulp of her wine, the once sweet taste now only bringing bitterness.
"He hid it well," Margaret said with a bitter smile. "Not a single hint. All these years, I had no idea Eloise existed."
Calla stood up and looked at her. "You've been with him for over a decade and couldn't ask him this question. Do you think he'd tell me, a stranger who's only met him a few times? If he's been hiding it from you, it means it's a secret he doesn't want anyone to know. Why push his limits and pry into his privacy? Doing so will only annoy him. He'll see it as you trying to control him, not as an expression of your love."
Margaret stared at her blankly. "You're right, why didn't I think of that? You see things more clearly than I do. When he married Elizabeth, I thought she wasn't good enough for him. Elizabeth was so ordinary! Her looks, body, and background are all average—she was inferior to me in every way, even in her feelings for Michael. But Michael married her and even fell in love with her. I was insanely jealous of her back then. But now that he's divorced her, why would he choose someone as abnormal as Eloise as his girlfriend? Isn't that an insult to me? He'd rather be with someone like Eloise than come to me. How much must he despise me? I'd rather he stayed with Elizabeth. At least now, Elizabeth is a worthy opponent."
Margaret continued to mutter to herself. Under the influence of alcohol, she was completely immersed in the pain of unrequited love for Michael.
Tears streamed down her face, falling into her wine glass and creating tiny ripples.
Calla listened to Margaret's words, indifferent, focusing only on the name "Elizabeth."
She was Michael's ex-wife. They had a four-year marriage.
Calla pondered. While she was doing research abroad, she had heard Elizabeth's name many times.
They both worked in Emily's lab. But Calla never had access to Emily's core research, while Elizabeth did.
Emily valued Elizabeth so much, teaching her everything she knew. But she let Emily down by not pursuing a medical career after graduation.
Rumor had it she co-founded a tech company, abandoning the medical skills Emily had taught her.
Calla thought, 'Even Emily misjudges people sometimes. If she had chosen me for personal mentorship, I would never have disappointed her. Elizabeth chose business over medicine. Emily would be heartbroken if she knew. But it seems Elizabeth's medical skills aren't that great. Otherwise, Michael, who knows her for so long and was married to her for over four years, never asked her to help Eloise with surgery. Clearly, Michael doesn't think much of her medical skills.'
Calla was still lost in thought in the yard when she noticed Margaret had slipped away quietly.
She glanced toward the door and scoffed.
Margaret's feelings for Michael were so obvious, she might as well have shouted it from the rooftops.
Calla couldn't help but mock her in her mind.
Margaret liked Michael but had no clue how to win him over or make him fall for her. That was why she failed.
But Calla wasn't about to make the same mistake. She had the looks, the brains, and the medical skills.
She clenched her fist lightly, a smile full of ambition spreading across her lips. She believed that one day, Michael would fall for her and willingly marry her. By then, she'd truly be part of high society.
Over at Whispering Pines Estates, Nancy had just finished cooking and was eating with Nolan and Pearl.
Nolan seemed distracted.
Nancy looked at him with concern. "Nolan, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Or is the food not to your liking?"
Nolan shook his head lightly. "No, Grandma. The food is great. I was just wondering why Mom hasn't come back yet. I shouldn't have brought Eloise back. I made Mom sad. I want to apologize to her. Grandma, do you know when Mom will be back?"
Pearl chimed in, "Grandma, I miss Mom too. When will she be back?"
Nancy, serving them oatmeal, said, "Mom went to the hospital. She'll come back as soon as she's done. She doesn't work at the hospital."
Pearl asked anxiously, "Grandma, did Mom take Eloise to the hospital? Is she going to treat Eloise and save her?"
Nancy nodded. "Yes, Mom went to help Eloise. She'll come back to see you as soon as she's done. She loves you so much and can't bear to be away from you for too long."
Nolan kept his head down, quietly eating.
Pearl looked at Nancy with concern. "Grandma, will Mom be able to cure Eloise?"
Nancy reassured her, "You have to trust Mom. She's very skilled."
Nolan suddenly muttered angrily, "If she can't be cured, then so be it."
Pearl and Nancy looked at him in surprise.
Nolan blamed himself as he said, "I shouldn't have brought her back. She made Mom sad, and now Mom has to take care of her for so long. When she's better, will she team up with Michael to bully Mom again?"
Nancy was surprised at how much Nolan understood.
She filled his plate with more food. "Nolan, you shouldn't be angry while eating; it will upset your stomach. Let the adults handle their own problems. They will find their own solutions. You brought Eloise home for treatment because you're a kind child. And Eloise, though an adult, has the mind of a child. She might not know anything and is just being manipulated. So don't be angry with her. Is it possible that Michael is the one using and deceiving her? Maybe she is a victim too."
After hearing Nancy's words, Nolan and Pearl quietly ate their food. But Nolan was still thinking about seeing Elizabeth as soon as possible to apologize. He didn't want to make her sad.
