Chapter 581 News of Death
Cordelia didn't expect to hear a child's voice. She thought it was Elizabeth calling, but it turned out to be a little girl.
Could it be Michael and Elizabeth's daughter?
"Are you Pearl?" Cordelia quickly composed herself and spoke gently, "I'm your dad's wife now, Cordelia. Has your mom mentioned me?"
Pearl's face fell, and her eyes started to redden as soon as she heard Cordelia confirm her identity.
"I want to talk to my dad. Why are you answering his phone?" Pearl's voice trembled, tears welling up in her eyes.
Elizabeth heard Pearl's shout and quickly called out, "Pearl, what's wrong?"
She asked while hurriedly rinsing Francis off and wrapping him in a towel.
Cordelia heard the commotion on the other end and calmly continued, "Pearl, I get how you feel. But your dad and I are married now, and I'm pregnant with his child. I hope you can accept us."
"What did you say? You're pregnant with Dad's child?"
This news hit Pearl like a ton of bricks, and she started crying harder.
"It's been two months," Cordelia said with a hint of pride. "You're not a little kid anymore; you need to accept reality. Maybe your mom can find you a new dad. Michael will be living with me in Majestic City from now on. He won't be coming back to Aurora Bay."
"Pearl! What's going on?" Elizabeth placed Francis on the bed and walked over to Pearl.
Seeing her daughter in tears, she quickly pulled her into a hug.
"Mom!" Pearl sobbed into Elizabeth's arms, "Cordelia said she's pregnant with Dad's child. Mom, is it true?"
Elizabeth held Pearl close, gently patting her back to comfort her. She took the phone. The call was still connected.
"Cordelia, what nonsense are you telling Pearl?" Elizabeth's voice was icy. "You know very well whether the child you're carrying is Michael's."
"You'll find out the truth sooner or later," Cordelia sneered. "Do you want to know why I'm answering his phone? Because he allowed it."
This statement cut Elizabeth like a knife.
She knew Michael too well; if he hadn't agreed, no one would touch his phone.
"Let him tell me himself," Elizabeth said, suppressing her anger. "As long as he tells me these things personally, I promise I won't bother you anymore."
"Sorry, he doesn't want to see you right now," Cordelia said smugly. "I'm pregnant, and he's particularly concerned about my emotions. If anything happens to the baby because I'm upset, no one can bear that responsibility."
The call abruptly ended, and Elizabeth's hand trembled slightly as she held the phone.
She sat on the couch with Pearl, gently comforting her, "Pearl, don't cry. What Cordelia said isn't true. Your dad already told me before that she's carrying a test-tube baby, and it has nothing to do with him."
Seeing Pearl gradually calm down, Elizabeth made a decision. Once the kids were asleep, she dialed Juan's number.
"Juan, it's me," Elizabeth said directly when the call connected. "I tried to reach Michael tonight, but Cordelia answered the phone."
Juan sighed on the other end, "That's normal. Michael is still unconscious and in the ICU. He definitely can't answer the phone. You didn't know?"
Elizabeth's heart tightened upon hearing the news. "Unconscious? ICU? It's that serious? What happened? How did Michael get hurt? Was it Zander?"
Juan hesitated before speaking, "Yeah, it was Zander. Kirk was there too. Gerald is dead. Michael was planning to return to Aurora Bay. Cordelia was really upset. Zander couldn't handle it and shot Michael at the hospital. He got hit in the knee and chest, lost a lot of blood. Luckily, the bullet missed his heart by less than an inch. Otherwise, not even a miracle could've saved him."
Elizabeth temporarily ignored Gerald's death and asked anxiously, "Is Michael in critical condition? Have you seen him?"
Juan replied helplessly, "The entire ICU floor is guarded by the Murphy family's bodyguards. Not even a fly can get in. Cordelia won't let anyone near Michael, except herself."
Elizabeth asked, "Did you say Gerald is dead?" She found it hard to believe.
"Yeah. Cordelia took care of it herself. Hard to believe, right? That fragile Cordelia."
Elizabeth was too shocked to speak.
Juan, not hearing her response, grew worried, "Elizabeth, don't do anything rash! I know what you're thinking. Are you planning to go to Majestic City to save Michael? I'm telling you, you can't! Gerald is dead. Cordelia is in control of the Murphy family now. She's not the same Cordelia as before! You haven't seen her current state! You're no match for her alone! Since she killed her father, she's been fearless!"
Elizabeth spoke softly, "I know. I'm thinking of a plan."
"No plan will work! Michael is still unconscious. Even if you come, you can't do anything. You can't talk to him or take him away. I advise you to wait a few days until he wakes up. Then I'll help you leave."
After hanging up, Elizabeth's mind was in turmoil.
Knowing Michael's condition, she couldn't just sit and wait for him to wake up.
He's still in the ICU, not out of danger. She couldn't wait.
What if it takes a long time for Michael to wake up?
Or, what if during his coma, Cordelia does something to control his mind?
No. Elizabeth told herself. She wouldn't wait passively.
She was never one to sit and wait. She had to take action. She had to be by his side during his most dangerous time.
But first, she needed to tell Pearl her thoughts and plans.
This time, going to Majestic City, she didn't know how long she would stay. She couldn't let Pearl worry about her constantly.
Majestic City, Silverline Hospital, ICU.
The hallway stairs and elevators were guarded by the Murphy family's bodyguards. Medical staff entering and exiting Michael's room were thoroughly checked.
In Michael's private room, outside the glass, Cordelia sat in a chair, staring at him without blinking.
The man lying in the bed was the love of her life, more important to her than her father. She had already proven this with her actions.
Cordelia thought, Michael no longer needed to think about returning to Aurora Bay.
He had no thoughts, couldn't move, and could only stay here, always with her.
Cordelia stood up and walked towards the door.
At the entrance, she commanded the bodyguards again, "Make sure no one unauthorized gets near him."
The bodyguards immediately stood at attention, "Yes, Ms. Murphy!"
