Chapter 148 What Would Be Close Then??

Elizabeth leaned against the car door, trying to calm herself down. She couldn't go home in such a foul mood, so she decided to head back to the office. It was still early, and she could get some work done. She figured she could go home later once she felt better.

Out of nowhere, someone came running towards her from across the street.

Before she could even react, she saw Anthony already standing in front of her.

Looking at Anthony's face, which she found utterly repulsive, Elizabeth took a step back, frowning as she looked him up and down. "Anthony? What are you doing here?"

Anthony grinned as he walked closer. "Elizabeth? I saw someone who looked just like you from across the street. I ran over to check, and it turns out it is you." He touched the Range Rover behind her, smiling obsequiously. "Is this your car? It's gorgeous."

Elizabeth didn't want to spend another second with him.

She really didn't want to deal with him, so she opened the car door, got in, hit the gas, and sped off.

But she didn't expect Anthony to get in his car and follow her to the Jones Group.

Elizabeth was still fuming from her call with Michael and didn't even notice Anthony was tailing her.

The receptionist was about to stop Anthony, but seeing him closely following Elizabeth, she hesitated.

Anthony was quite good-looking and always paid a lot of attention to his appearance.

After all, he was still part of the Thomas Family, and his every move exuded the refined grace of a wealthy young gentleman.

The receptionist thought he might be another one of Elizabeth's suitors.

She glanced at Elizabeth, who didn't react, so she let Anthony go upstairs.

Elizabeth entered her office, and Anthony followed her in.

Elizabeth had just sat down when she turned and saw Anthony, startling her.

She widened her eyes and shouted at Anthony, "Anthony! When did you come in? Who let you in?"

Anthony pointed downstairs. "Your receptionist didn't stop me, so I just came up."

"What do you want?" Elizabeth's mood soured the moment she saw him.

Anthony said, "We didn't finish our conversation at the restaurant entrance."

"What is there to talk about between us?" Elizabeth was angry.

Anthony said ingratiatingly, "Don't be like that, Elizabeth. Even if we broke up, we can still be friends."

Elizabeth sneered. "Who wants to be friends with you? Do we have any relationship left?"

Anthony continued. "Elizabeth, we were together for years, weren't we? You're not that heartless."

"Speaking of heartless, I remember your ex-girlfriend, Patricia. She's been dead for four years, right?"

"Why are you bringing her up?" Anthony's face changed.

"She had no deep hatred for Michael. Why do you think she wanted him dead?" Elizabeth said.

Anthony avoided Elizabeth's gaze. "I wasn't that close to her. How would I know about her issues with Michael?"

Elizabeth laughed. "Anthony, you're really shameless. Not that close? You two had sex at my wedding. And you say you weren't close? What would be close then?"

Anthony was at a loss. "Elizabeth, why are you so harsh now? You weren't like this before. You used to be so gentle."

Elizabeth waved her hand dismissively. "Don't talk to me about the past! From the day you betrayed me, you became nothing to me!"

Anthony's face darkened. "Elizabeth, why do you have to degrade me like this? Have you forgotten our sweet past?"

"Wasn't your past with Patricia sweet? Didn't you feel guilty rolling around in bed with her? She probably only had you in her heart, right? You're always good with sweet talk. You must have made her do anything for you, right? If you asked her to kill someone for you, she would have foolishly agreed. Anyway, Patricia was my stepsister. I didn't have the money or ability to find out the real cause of her death before. Now I can afford a private investigator." She glanced at Anthony. "Anthony, should I help her investigate? What if she died unjustly?"

Cold sweat appeared on Anthony's forehead. "Elizabeth, I won't bother you anymore. You get back to work, and I'll leave."

Elizabeth said coldly, "Goodbye."

Anthony turned and walked towards the door.

On a cabinet by the door, there was an acrylic photo frame.

Anthony glanced at the photo and froze.

It was a picture of Elizabeth, her arms full of two smiling children: Pearl and Nolan.

Anthony stared intently at Pearl.

He pointed at Pearl, eyes wide. "Elizabeth, is this little girl your daughter? I've seen her, twice! Every time I see her, I become unlucky!"

Anthony held up two fingers toward Elizabeth.

Elizabeth quickly walked over and flipped the photo frame face down on the shelf.

She pointed at the door. "Aren't you leaving?"

Anthony touched his nose, deep in thought, and left.

After Anthony left, Elizabeth sat back in her chair, holding her head in her hands. Too much had happened today. She needed to sort it out. Anthony knew Pearl? When had they met?

Pearl and Nolan were always different from other kids.

They always had their ideas, especially Nolan.

Had they heard something?

Or had Nolan found out something?

Otherwise, why would Pearl meet Anthony?

Maybe it was Nolan's arrangement.

Elizabeth felt uneasy. She was very afraid Anthony would mention the two kids to Michael.

Meanwhile, at Moonlit Grove, Michael sat in the living room, examining Calla's hand.

What was originally just a burn had now clearly become infected and festering.

Michael frowned. "How did it get this bad?"

Calla looked at him with tears in her eyes. "Michael, will you despise me?"

Michael said, "Why would you think that?"

"My hand is injured, and it won't heal in a few days. I can't perform surgery. Eloise's treatment will be delayed. It will hinder her recovery progress. Will you be mad at me?" she said.

"Don't think about that now. Does it hurt?" as soon as Calla heard him ask that, tears immediately streamed down her face.

She nodded heavily. "It hurts a lot."

Michael stood up and took her other hand. "Let's go. I'll take you to the hospital."

Calla stood up, leaning into his arms, and closed her eyes.
