Chapter 239 Illusion
Elizabeth had a long, restful sleep.
When she finally woke up, she stretched out like a lazy cat.
Grabbing her phone to check the time, she noticed a bunch of missed calls.
She frowned. What the heck? Why were all these random numbers calling her?
Dean had left her a message: [There's food on the table. Call me back after you've eaten.]
Elizabeth shrugged off the missed calls from the unknown numbers. She took her sweet time with her morning routine, got dressed, and headed to the dining room for breakfast.
The kids were already off to preschool, and Dean was busy at the company.
She could chill for a bit.
After eating, she remembered Dean's message.
Dean must have come home super late last night; who knew what kind of party he was at?
She called him up. "Why were you so desperate for me to call you back? Can't it wait until I get to the office? Is it something urgent?"
Dean's voice was unusually serious. "Elizabeth, you're awake? Did you sleep well?"
Elizabeth felt a bit uneasy because of his tone. "Yeah, I slept fine."
Dean said, "Then come to the office. I have something to tell you."
Elizabeth thought, 'Can't you just tell me over the phone?'
In the VIP ward at Harmony Health Hospital, Michael stayed by Eloise's side.
Eloise hadn't woken up yet.
He had sent Calla home to rest.
After all, she was pregnant and had just performed a long surgery, so she was exhausted.
Calla had initially resisted. "Michael, Eloise just had surgery. I'm worried she might have some complications. I'd feel better staying with her. Besides, I wouldn't be able to sleep even if I went home."
A pang of guilt rose in Michael's heart; he had doubted her.
Calla was actually a really good woman.
She was dignified, very capable at work, had a great personality, and wasn't arrogant, jealous, or materialistic.
Most importantly, she was very attentive to Eloise's needs.
If she weren't pregnant with his child, Michael might have considered being with her properly.
But now that she was pregnant, he felt a bit repelled by her.
"No need. You go rest. I'll stay with Eloise. If anything happens, I'll call you."
Calla thought for a moment, nodded, and left.
When Eloise woke up, the first person she saw was Michael. "Michael."
Michael was thrilled to see her awake. "Eloise, you're awake? Do you feel any discomfort?"
Eloise slowly shook her head. "No, just a bit of a headache."
She looked around and then asked, "Michael, am I in the hospital? Did Elizabeth perform surgery on me again?"
Michael was taken aback.
He just realized that after Eloise woke up, her eyes and tone had changed.
Her eyes were no longer innocent and naive.
Her tone was now more mature, like an adult.
Michael held her hand. "Eloise, it was Calla who performed the surgery on you. I asked her to go home and rest."
Eloise frowned. "Calla? How could it be Calla? It was clearly Elizabeth."
Michael patiently explained, "I saw Calla come out of the operating room with my own eyes. And the anesthetist and nurses here can all confirm it. It was really Calla."
Eloise didn't buy it. "I clearly remember Elizabeth comforting me, telling me not to worry and not to be afraid. She said I would just sleep and the surgery would be over. What does this have to do with Calla?"
"Eloise, whether you believe it or not, it was really Calla. I even called Elizabeth to confirm, and she denied performing any surgery on you."
Eloise's eyes were firm. "Michael, no matter how much you don't want to believe it, it's true. Even last time, it was Elizabeth who did the surgery on me. Calla had nothing to do with it."
Michael was stunned.
In all these years, he had never seen such a determined look on Eloise's face.
Was this some kind of postoperative reaction?
Was Eloise hallucinating about Elizabeth performing the surgery?
Feeling anxious and uneasy, Michael called Calla, "Calla, Eloise is awake. But there's a bit of a problem."
"She woke up so soon? That's great news. What's the issue?"
Michael hesitated, "I think she's having hallucinations. She insists it was Elizabeth who did the surgery."
Calla broke out in a cold sweat.
Could it be that the mysterious surgeon who operated on Eloise without showing their face was actually Elizabeth?
No wonder Elizabeth had said the surgeon was someone else and accused Calla of taking credit to deceive Michael.
It made sense. If there was one person who wouldn't care about Michael's reward, it would be Elizabeth.
Calla's nails dug into her palm, and she felt a sting.
She absolutely couldn't let this situation escalate.
Now was not the best time to leave Michael.
She instructed the driver to take her to Harmony Health Hospital as quickly as possible.
She hurried upstairs.
After seeing Michael, Calla pretended to calmly examine Eloise.
She smiled and asked, "Eloise, do you feel any discomfort?"
Eloise coldly replied, "Dr. Griffin, I don't need you."
Eloise had long noticed that Calla only showed her a gentle smile when Michael was around.
Calla wasn't fazed by Eloise's rejection. "Eloise, don't throw a tantrum. You just woke up, and your vital signs are still unstable. You need to rest."
Eloise turned her head away, ignoring her.
Calla faced Michael with a hurt expression.
Michael's guilt towards her doubled.
He walked over to Eloise. "Eloise, Calla stayed up all night performing surgery on you. You should thank her. You also owe her an apology for your rude behavior just now."
Eloise closed her eyes and pulled the blanket over her head.
Just as Michael was about to pull the blanket off Eloise's head, Calla quickly stopped him.
She gently said, "Michael, Eloise just woke up, her emotions are unstable, and her memory is confused. Don't hold it against her."
Michael's affection for Calla was growing bit by bit.
She had worked all night, and when he asked her to rest, Eloise woke up just as she got home. But because of his call, she rushed back without complaint.
Michael softly said, "Calla, I'm sorry. I apologize on behalf of Eloise."
Calla smiled, "Michael, I know how important Eloise is to you. Since you're my boyfriend, I naturally also consider Eloise very important. Don't worry. Eloise is your family. I will also treat her as family and take care of her."
Hearing her say this, Michael felt infinite comfort and gratitude.
He thought, 'Elizabeth should really hear this and reflect on how petty she is.'
But then he suddenly felt that it was better for Elizabeth to remain petty.
His heart seemed to reject Elizabeth's magnanimity.
