Chapter 467 Missed Appointment
Elizabeth took a deep breath and said, "I've got a bit of an emergency here. Michael, can you wait for me? I'll be there soon."
Michael didn't suspect anything. "Sure, I'll wait."
She hung up the phone and was about to leave when Quinn suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Elizabeth was shocked and immediately pressed the call button by the bed.
Doctors and nurses quickly arrived.
The doctor examined Quinn and gave orders, "Administer hemostatic medication. No food or water tonight. Schedule an endoscopy for tomorrow morning."
Elizabeth, still shaken, asked, "Is Quinn having a stomach bleed?"
"Before he was admitted, he was severely malnourished. I suspect his gastrointestinal tract is also severely damaged."
Elizabeth grabbed a tissue and gently wiped the blood from Quinn's mouth. Her movements were tender, her brow furrowed with worry and pain.
Quinn slowly opened his eyes and weakly said, "Dr. Jones, you haven't left yet?"
Elizabeth sighed, "Seeing you like this, I can't leave you alone."
Quinn managed a faint smile. "Dr. Jones, I'll be fine. Go take care of your business. I'm used to being alone."
Elizabeth's heart ached even more.
She sat back down. "I'll stay with you a bit longer. I'll leave once you're stable."
Quinn, pale as a sheet, smiled at her.
Elizabeth looked at Quinn lying in the hospital bed, thinking he looked as fragile as a piece of paper. It seemed like a gust of wind could blow him away.
She quickly got up and tucked the blanket around him again.
At the top-floor restaurant of the Pearl Tower, Michael sat quietly by the window in a sharp suit.
He had reserved the entire restaurant for the evening.
The waitstaff, pianist, and pastry chef were all in place. Roses, fireworks, cake, ring, and lighting were all arranged.
Everything was ready, just waiting for Elizabeth to arrive.
It was already late. Michael looked out at the sparkling city night. He dialed Elizabeth's number again.
The automated voice informed him that her phone was turned off.
Michael was a bit taken aback. He didn't want to disturb her if she was busy or driving. He was worried that calling her repeatedly might distract her. So, he held back his anxiety and didn't call again.
He thought that if she couldn't make it, she would at least call to let him know. Instead, her phone was off, and he couldn't reach her.
A wave of frustration washed over him.
They had made this date early in the morning. She had even stood on her tiptoes in the morning light, kissed him lightly on the corner of his mouth, and said, "Okay. I'll be there. Promise."
Sarah had invited her to go shopping today.
Michael had come to the restaurant early to set up and plan a romantic proposal surprise.
Before leaving, he had reminded Elizabeth, "Don't stay out too late. I don't like waiting too long."
Elizabeth had winked at him playfully. "Don't worry, I won't."
In the afternoon, Michael had even called David to have Sarah come back early.
So what was Elizabeth busy with now?
A waiter came to ask when to serve dessert.
Michael suppressed his frustration and dialed her number again.
Still off.
He called her driver.
"Mr. Thomas, Ms. Jones didn't use the car today."
Michael hung up and remembered that the Martinez family's car had picked Elizabeth up from his place this morning. She hadn't gone back to Whispering Pines Estates.
He called Sarah. The phone rang for a long time with no answer. So, he called David.
"Michael, you're looking for Sarah? I'll get her."
David handed the phone to Sarah.
Sarah was a bit annoyed. She and David were about to take a bath together. Michael was really annoying, not bothering others but getting in their way.
"What's up?"
"When did you last see Elizabeth?"
"I left at five. Why, hasn't she arrived yet?"
Sarah was a bit worried.
Three hours had passed. If Elizabeth hadn't gone to meet Michael, where could she be?
"She hasn't shown up. Her phone is off. I can't reach her."
"Call her bodyguard. When we left, her bodyguard was already there."
Michael immediately called Elizabeth's bodyguard and asked, "Where's Elizabeth?"
The bodyguard was standing outside the hospital room. He glanced inside through the glass. "Mr. Thomas, Ms. Jones is with a patient."
Michael exhaled, unsure if he was more angry or relieved. "Which patient? Is it Quinn?"
"Mr. Thomas, how did you know? Did Ms. Jones tell you?"
"Wasn't his surgery already done? Why is Elizabeth still with him?"
"He just vomited blood. His condition is unstable."
Michael hung up. He didn't want to ask any more questions.
Sure, vomiting blood was serious. But didn't Quinn have any family?
Even if his family wasn't around, what was Elizabeth to him? Why did it have to be her?
Weren't there doctors and nurses at the hospital?
Would Quinn recover just because Elizabeth was there?
The more Michael thought about it, the angrier he got.
He had spent the whole day preparing, waiting for her for three hours. From excitement and anticipation to worry and tension, then to disappointment and anger.
It wasn't even nine yet.
He sighed. He could wait a bit longer.
At the hospital, Quinn finally stopped vomiting blood. Maybe he was finally relaxed, and he fell asleep.
Elizabeth quietly got up and left the room.
She instructed the bodyguard at the door, "You're responsible for Quinn's safety for the next few days. Don't leave him. Absolutely no one from the Reed family is allowed near him."
The bodyguard nodded. "Ms. Jones, I understand. Michael called me earlier."
Elizabeth was taken aback. Why hadn't Michael called her directly?
She took out her phone and saw it was dead.
She smacked her forehead, frustrated. "Oh no! He's definitely mad!"
She borrowed a charger in the lobby, quickly hailed a cab, and headed straight to Pearl Tower.
When her phone turned on, several missed calls and unread messages popped up.
There were messages from Michael and Sarah.
Michael: [Where are you? How much longer?]
Sarah: [Elizabeth, where did you go? Michael can't find you and called David. Be prepared. He's probably mad.]
Elizabeth sighed inwardly. Was he still waiting for her this late? Would he listen to her explanation?
Outside the car window, it started to rain. The light drizzle quickly turned into a downpour.
Elizabeth's heart grew more anxious.
