Chapter 244 I Will Kiss You
Calla glanced at Clio and then, with an innocent look, said to Michael, "I didn't tell her to keep giving it to Eloise. The bottle was new and unopened at the time. I never told Clio to give her the whole bottle."
"Then why didn't you make it clear to Clio?" Michael pressed.
Calla shrugged. "There was a manual. I figured Clio would read it."
Clio, looking panicked, blurted out, "Dr. Griffin, you told me to put one pill in Ms. Thomas' meal each time, but you never said for how many days!"
Calla sighed. "Sleeping pills shouldn't be taken in large amounts continuously; that's just common sense. I thought you'd know that, Clio."
Clio was at a loss for words. "Dr. Griffin, you..."
She turned to Michael, feeling both wronged and scared. "Mr. Thomas, it's all my fault! I was too careless!"
Luckily, Eloise didn't have any serious issues; otherwise, Clio would have felt guilty for the rest of her life.
Michael gave Calla a hard look. "From now on, when you prescribe medication for Eloise, give it to me first."
Calla nodded. "No problem."
Michael then said, "You can leave now."
Calla glanced at Clio and left the office.
Michael turned to Clio. "Clio, you should go back too. Eloise needs you. Just make sure to inform me about any medication for Eloise in the future."
Clio nodded repeatedly. "I will take even better care of Ms. Thomas."
Michael gently patted her shoulder. "Clio, thank you for all your hard work over the years."
Tears welled up in Clio's eyes. "It's my honor to take care of Ms. Thomas. I can't let down your trust and Ms. Thomas's reliance on me."
"You should go back and take care of Eloise."
"Okay." With that, Clio also left.
The sun had already set, and the night outside the window was growing darker.
Michael sat in his office chair, staring out the window.
Fortunately, Eloise sensed something was wrong and went to find Elizabeth, who promptly took her to the hospital. Otherwise, who knew what might have happened to Eloise?
Michael also felt guilty for letting Calla do what she did to Eloise.
Calla was clearly shirking responsibility.
It seemed like she deliberately used Clio to feed sleeping pills to Eloise.
Why would she do that?
It seemed like she was afraid of Eloise waking up.
Thinking of this, Michael clenched his fists.
Calla seemed to be hiding something.
He had to find out.
If Elizabeth hadn't taken Eloise to the hospital, he would have regretted it for the rest of his life.
He should thank her properly.
Early the next morning, Elizabeth and the kids were having breakfast when the doorbell rang again.
It was Clio. "Ms. Jones, I'm here on behalf of Mr. Thomas to thank you for saving Ms. Thomas yesterday," she said.
Elizabeth responded, "No need to be so formal."
Clio said, "By saving Ms. Thomas, you saved me too."
Elizabeth looked puzzled.
Clio continued, "Ms. Jones, I've been taking care of Ms. Thomas for over twenty years. I've poured my heart and soul into her. She's like a daughter to me. If anything happened to her, it would break my heart."
Elizabeth was surprised. "Over twenty years? You've been with Eloise all this time?"
Clio nodded. "Yes. I've been taking care of Ms. Thomas since she was very young."
Elizabeth thought, 'Clio listens to Michael's every word. It's obvious she's a nanny hired by the Thomas family. Could it be that he and Eloise have known each other since childhood?'
Clio glanced at Nolan and said, "Ms. Jones, this must be Mr. Thomas's child. He looks exactly like Mr. Thomas when he was young."
Elizabeth's heart skipped a beat, but she replied, "It's just a coincidence."
Clio didn't press further; she stayed for a while and then left.
Later, Dean took Pearl and Nolan to kindergarten while Elizabeth went to the office for an impromptu meeting with the executives.
So, the Jones Group put out a statement online after that meeting.
They admitted their housekeeping robots didn't have cameras as good as Innovatech Solutions' ones, but that was because of the price difference. Everything else was up to international standards.
But the statement didn't really get much attention. It seemed like people just stopped caring about the whole thing.
That evening, Elizabeth went back to her room, grabbed her phone, and wanted to check out the latest comments about the Jones Group's robots.
But instead, she got a notification about Michael and Calla's engagement. She angrily swiped it away. After scrolling for a bit and not seeing any new negative comments, she put her phone down.
She thought, 'Tomorrow's the day he gets engaged to someone else. Michael and I will be done for good.'
Thinking about it made her heart ache. She tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep, but she didn't want to admit the news was bothering her.
Frustrated, she got up, opened the fridge, grabbed a beer, and drank it. But she still couldn't sleep.
So, she opened a bottle of red wine and drank a big glass. Finally, she fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Elizabeth was still out cold when the doorbell rang.
She pulled the blanket over her head, not wanting to deal with it.
'What's with all these early morning visitors lately?' she thought.
Worried the doorbell would wake Pearl and Nolan, she reluctantly got up.
Elizabeth threw on a robe and groggily made her way to the living room. She checked the monitor and saw it was Michael.
Still foggy from last night's drinking, she subconsciously thought Michael was just coming home late, like old times.
Without thinking, she opened the door and headed back to her room.
Michael walked in, went straight to her room, and picked her up from the bed.
Half-asleep, Elizabeth mumbled, "Michael, what are you doing now?" She didn't resist as he carried her away.
Michael put her in the back seat of his car, where she continued to sleep soundly.
He whispered in her ear, "How much did you drink?"
She waved him off with her eyes closed and snapped, "None of your business! Go get engaged!"
Her tone was full of hurt.
Michael felt a pang in his heart.
Did she drink because of his engagement? Was she heartbroken? Did she still care about him?
He sat beside her, gently stroking her cheek and tucking her hair behind her ear.
Then he told the driver, "Drive."
The driver started the car and headed to Sunset Serenity Avenue.
When they got there, Michael told the driver, "Take a cab back. I'll drive."
The driver nodded and left.
Michael moved Elizabeth to the front passenger seat, where she stayed asleep. He couldn't help but watch her. Her hair was a mess, and her brows were furrowed. Was she troubled even in her dreams?
"Elizabeth, what's bothering you? Do you not want me to get engaged to Calla?" he whispered in her ear.
But she didn't respond, still deep in sleep.
Michael buckled her seatbelt and gently patted her face.
"Elizabeth," he called softly.
She was sleeping soundly, but he kept patting her until she finally woke up.
She pouted, annoyed. "Who is it? So noisy this early!"
She opened her eyes and was startled to see Michael's face so close.
"Michael! What are you doing here?" she screamed.
Michael just looked at her coldly and said, "If you hadn't woken up just now, I would have kissed you!"
