Chapter 243 Sleeping Pills

Nolan and Pearl already had their backpacks on and were heading down the stairs when the doorbell wouldn't stop ringing.

Pearl dashed to the video intercom and shouted, "Mom, Nolan, it's Eloise!"

Elizabeth got up, muttering as she hit the button to open the door, "Eloise? What's she doing here so early?"

Eloise, tears streaming down her face, walked in with her nanny, Clio.

Elizabeth, puzzled, asked, "Eloise, what brings you here so early?"

But before she could finish, Eloise burst into loud sobs.

"I'm here to see you all for the last time," she cried.

Everyone's eyes widened in shock.

Pearl asked, "The last time? Eloise, where are you going?"

Nolan chimed in, "Is Michael going to lock you up?"

Elizabeth added, "Eloise, what happened?"

Eloise wiped her tears and said, "I knew you were the ones who truly cared about me."

She then walked over to the sofa, knelt down, opened her backpack, and started pulling things out one by one.

The three of them gathered around her.

Eloise emptied her bag, placing everything on the sofa and table.

Elizabeth asked, "Eloise, what are you doing?"

With tearful eyes, Eloise said, "Elizabeth, these are all my favorite things. I can't take them with me anymore, so I want to give them to you."

She held Nolan and Pearl's hands and continued, "You are my best friends. After I die, you'll miss me, right?"

The three of them were stunned.

Elizabeth replied, "Eloise, why are you saying this?"

Pearl said, "Eloise, why would you say you're going to die?"

Nolan added, "What nonsense are you talking about?"

Eloise started crying again.

Clio, standing nearby, said, "Eloise has been groggy day and night since she woke up from the surgery, always looking like she can't fully wake up. She keeps saying she's going to die soon. Today she forced herself to come see you."

Elizabeth found it strange. She had performed the surgery herself and confirmed there were no issues. Why did Eloise think she was going to die?

Nolan looked up at Elizabeth and said, "Mom, you can save her this time too, right?"

Elizabeth knelt down and responded, "She should go to the hospital, not come to us. I'm not omnipotent."

Tears welled up in Nolan's eyes. Although he usually acted indifferent towards Eloise, the thought of her dying and disappearing from the world made him very sad.

Seeing this, Elizabeth sighed. "Clio, if Eloise has a problem, you should tell Michael or Calla, not me."

Clio was a bit emotional. "I told Dr. Griffin. Mr. Thomas also consulted her. She said it was a normal reaction. But I can't just watch Eloise be groggy every day. She's worse off now than before the surgery!"

Elizabeth said, "Why didn't you take her to the hospital?"

Clio lowered her head.

Elizabeth thought, 'Clio doesn't dare offend Calla. After all, Calla is already Michael's fiancée and the future mistress of the Thomas family.'

Thinking of this, Elizabeth was a bit angry.

She said, "Clio, are you so afraid of Calla that you're willing to let Eloise suffer?"

Clio whispered, "I had no other choice. Eloise said she missed you. I thought maybe you could help Eloise. If you take her to the hospital, Mr. Thomas can't say anything about it."

Elizabeth glared at Clio. Clio didn't want to offend Calla herself, so she came to Elizabeth to do it. Elizabeth looked at the listless Eloise and couldn't bear it any longer.

"Let's go. I'll take you to the hospital," Elizabeth said.

Eloise's eyes lit up. "Elizabeth, I knew you'd help me," she said.

Nolan chimed in, "Mom, you go ahead. I'll take Pearl to kindergarten."

Elizabeth nodded and took Eloise and Clio to the hospital.

Later that evening, Clio left Eloise with Susan and took a cab to Stellar Enterprises by herself.

Michael was surprised to see her. "Clio, why aren't you at home with Eloise?" he asked.

With tears streaming down her face, Clio knelt in front of him. "Mr. Thomas, punish me!" she cried.

Michael quickly helped her up. "Clio, what are you doing? Get up and tell me what's going on," he said.

Clio shook her head, still kneeling. "Mr. Thomas, look at this first," she said, handing him Eloise's medical report.

Michael's eyes widened as he read it. "Eloise's blood has such a high content of sleeping pills?" he asked.

Clio nodded, tears falling.

"Who gave her the sleeping pills?" Michael asked again, suspicion in his eyes.

Clio pointed to herself. "I did, Mr. Thomas. I gave her the pills."

"Why did you do that?" Michael demanded.

"After Eloise' surgery, Dr. Griffin came to me and said Eloise had postoperative delusions and needed sedation. She gave me this bottle of pills," Clio explained, pulling a pill bottle from her pocket and handing it to Michael. "Dr. Griffin told me to add one pill per meal to Eloise' three meals, so I've been giving them to her, not realizing it would harm her."

Michael frowned at the pill bottle in his hand. Sleeping pills shouldn't be taken long-term. But Eloise had been taking them for so long, under his orders!

He remembered that he was there that day too. He had even blamed Eloise for being unreasonable. It just dawned on him now; no wonder Eloise was always so drowsy.

Michael helped Clio up. "Thankfully, you noticed something was wrong with Eloise and got her to the hospital. Otherwise, the consequences could have been dire," he said.

Clio stood up, head lowered. "Mr. Thomas, it wasn't me. It was Ms. Jones. She took Eloise to the hospital for the checkup," she said.

"Elizabeth? How did she get involved again?" Michael asked.

"Eloise has been feeling like she's going to die these past few days. She wanted to say goodbye to her good friends. This morning, she went to Whispering Pines Estates. Ms. Jones thought she was in a bad state and took her to the hospital," Clio explained.

So it was Elizabeth. Michael's heart ached at the thought of her. Soon, he would be engaged to Calla, and Elizabeth would be out of his life forever.

He took out his phone and made a call. "Calla, come to the office," he said.

Calla received the call and, sensing something unusual in his tone, and quickly arrived at his office. She saw Clio the moment she walked in. "Clio, why are you here?" she asked.

Clio glanced at her and lowered her head without speaking.

Michael handed the pill bottle to Calla. "Did you give this to Clio?" he asked.

Calla nodded. "Yes," she said, already understanding why Michael had called her over.

"This is a sleeping pill. You gave this to Eloise?" Michael continued.

"She had delusions and agitation right after the surgery. She needed sedation at that time," Calla explained.

"If she only needed the sedatives for those few days, why did you keep giving them to her? Aren't you afraid of causing further damage to her brain?" Michael demanded.
