Chapter 43 Do You Really Not Want to Owe Me anything?
Elizabeth yanked Michael outta the cinima.
She glanced over at Michael, noticing his chill vibe, and it hit her—Michael was totally on a date with her.
For a guy as swamped as him, he actually took the time to watch some artsy-fartsy flick with her.
Didn’t that mean Michael was really into her?
Back in the day, Michael couldn’t stand her and was itching to get a divorce. No way he’d stoop to hanging out in a packed cinima with her.
He was all about that peace and quiet life.
Sarah even said Michael was like a rockstar to a bunch of people. Tons of women were into him.
Thinking about it, Elizabeth got all mixed up. She stopped, let go of Michael’s hand, and said softly, “Michael, you should head back. I wanna be alone.”
Michael looked at her, confused, but didn’t say a word. He turned and got into the car.
Soon, Joshua drove him away.
Elizabeth strolled down the street alone.
She needed to untangle her messy thoughts.
Now it was clear—Michael liked her.
But what about her? Did she like Michael?
A tiny voice inside her whispered, 'Yeah, she liked him.'
She liked his good looks, and how he noticed everything about her.
She liked his tall, strong build, and those long legs.
She even laughed at herself for liking his cold way of talking.
Elizabeth warned herself not to fall for Michael.
She raised her hand and touched her small belly.
The babies were over three months along. It wasn’t showing yet.
But at five or six months, she could wear a thick coat to hide it. No one would notice.
What about at seven or eight months? What about when she was due?
By then, if she was still with Michael, how would she handle his anger?
They were together almost every day.
Eventually, he’d find out.
He had made it clear he didn’t want kids.
Was she gonna defy him?
Was she really gonna listen to him and get an abortion?
The thought of it made her shudder.
No way! That was her kid, who’d be her closest person in the future. She’d protect them no matter what.
She wouldn’t let anyone, including Michael, harm them.
So, the marriage had to end.
Even if Michael showed he liked her, she still had to leave.
She didn’t want to owe Michael anything.
Today he took her to the movies, so she should return the favor.
Elizabeth walked to the market.
The place was lit up and buzzing with people.
Elizabeth walked to a stall selling scarves. There were colorful scarves hanging, and a big sign said: Special Sale, $29.9 each.
Elizabeth picked a black and white striped scarf and asked the vendor to wrap it up. Then she took the bag, hailed a cab, and headed back to the Thomas Family’s Mansion.
By the time Elizabeth got back to the mansion, it was super late.
The mansion was quiet, with a light on in the hallway, which seemed to be left on for her.
Michael seemed to have hit the sack.
Elizabeth quietly slipped into the living room, changed her shoes, and tiptoed back to her own room.
After washing up, it was almost midnight when she finally crashed into bed.
Maybe it was the pregnancy, but she knocked out as soon as her head hit the pillow.
The next morning, Elizabeth woke up feeling fresh and headed to the dining room for breakfast.
Susan beamed at her, "Mrs. Thomas, hurry up! Mr. Thomas is waiting to have breakfast with you."
Hearing that, Elizabeth froze.
She thought for a sec, then went back to her room to grab the scarf she bought last night and handed it to Michael.
Michael gave her a puzzled look.
Elizabeth said, "You took me to the movies, so here's a little something in return. Can't take without giving, right?"
Michael's face turned icy.
"So that's how you see it? You don't wanna owe me anything?" He stood up abruptly, slammed his forks and knife on the table, and stormed out.
Michael called for the driver.
Soon, the sound of a car engine roared in the yard.
Elizabeth stood in the living room, confused.
Was he mad again? Did she mess up?
Susan saw her standing there awkwardly, took the bag from her, peeked at the scarf inside, and asked with a smile, "Mrs. Thomas, did you knit this scarf yourself?"
Elizabeth shook her head, "I don't know how to knit. I bought it at the market last night."
Susan felt even more awkward, "You bought a gift for Mr. Thomas from the market? Well, it looks nice though."
STellar Enterprises.
Michael took the CEO's private elevator to the top floor.
The secretary saw him step out and greeted him respectfully, "Good morning, Mr. Thomas!"
Michael responded with a cold nod.
The secretary didn’t dare look up but could feel the bad vibes radiating off him.
All morning, a dark cloud seemed to hang over STellar Enterprises.
Everyone could tell Michael was in a foul mood today.
Daniel quietly called Matthew, begging him to come over and defuse the situation.
Daniel was at his wit's end with Michael’s icy demeanor.
Even when Michael was in a bad mood before, it had never been this scary.
When Matthew arrived, he went straight to the executive assistant's office.
Daniel rushed over and said, "Mr. Thomas has already blown up several times this morning. I think his date with Elizabeth went south yesterday. What’s up with Elizabeth? Why would she tick him off? What’s in it for her to make him mad?"
Matthew replied, "Ever thought that’s what makes Elizabeth special? To Mr. Thomas, all the women in the world revolve around him to please him. He’s never met someone like Elizabeth, who’s indifferent and even defies him. It makes Michael even more interested. Interest is the first step to liking someone. Over time, Michael’s grown to like Elizabeth more and more."
Daniel suddenly got it, "So Elizabeth is actually a pro at this love game! In that case, isn’t Mr. Thomas getting played? Poor Mr. Thomas!"
