Chapter 405 Her Secret
Ironically, her father, Byron Taylor, was completely oblivious to it all. He believed his young wife and his son got along harmoniously.
The usual stepmom vs. stepson drama was nowhere to be found in the Taylor family. Instead, every day seemed filled with harmony and affection.
Byron felt deeply comforted by this and, as a result, doted on Margaret.
But when Margaret stumbled upon Delilah's secret, she felt sick to her stomach. From that moment on, she avoided Delilah and Samuel.
She became rebellious, resenting her biological mother Delilah and thinking Byron was weak.
She used to believe the Taylor family was a happy place. Her parents adored her, and her brother spoiled her. She was the happiest person.
But the truth is always cruel and dirty.
She chose to leave that home. She didn't care about the Taylor family's wealth. All she wanted was her own freedom.
She had beauty, a great figure, and a sharp mind. What kind of man couldn't she win over?
She had once vowed to marry Michael, following him to Aurora Bay, working at his company, and helping him solve countless problems.
But in the end, Michael didn't love her.
How could she accept that?
Thinking about this, she waved at Delilah, saying, "Delilah, I know you've always hated me. I don't want to see you either. Go back to Samuel! He needs you more!"
Strangely, when Margaret faced Samuel alone, he still felt like the brother who always pampered her.
But whenever Delilah appeared, Margaret would immediately recall those bad memories.
'This woman doesn't deserve to be a mother. If she never had any maternal love for me, why did she give birth to me in the first place?' Margaret thought bitterly.
Margaret held her head and whispered, "Just go. I need some time alone."
Delilah, eager to check on Samuel, left without hesitation.
Margaret heard the door open and close, and the sound of high heels fading away. Suddenly, she started laughing, wiping tears from the corners of her eyes as she did.
Tears are salty, and when they fall on wounds, they sting.
Margaret got out of bed and walked into the bathroom. She stood in front of the mirror, looking at the disfigured woman staring back at her.
This was the first time she looked in the mirror since her burns.
She raised her hands and let out a piercing scream.
Her face was severely burned, leaving a large, ugly scar. Even if the wounds healed, her face would never return to its former beauty.
Not to mention the various burns hidden under her hospital gown.
Her life was ruined. She would never win Michael back, and no man would ever accept her as she was now.
Her eyes widened, her arms braced against the sink, and she gasped for air.
"No, I am Margaret. I will never lose. Until the very last moment, I will not give up."
She calmed her breathing, walked back to her hospital room, and picked up her phone to make a call.
"Jennifer, how's everything going? Smoothly?"
The voice on the other end was filled with joy. "Margaret, you were right! The box was indeed taken by those two kids!"
Margaret smirked. "With all the security at Michael's house, who else could get into his study? Only his kids."
"Margaret, you really know Michael best!"
"Do you have the item?"
"Almost! It'll be here in forty minutes. The producer just called me. She kidnapped Michael's daughter and got the item. She's on her way to me now."
Margaret was skeptical. "Can you trust this producer?"
Jennifer was confident. "She's just a small-time producer at a TV station, working hard for a year to make what? The reward I offered her is worth ten lifetimes! She'd be a fool to betray me!"
"Alright. Let me know when you have it. Congratulations."
Jennifer laughed heartily. "Margaret, I should be thanking you for the information."
Margaret's voice was cold. "No need. I just don't want Michael to have it easy. Since he doesn't want me, I'll have to destroy him."
Jennifer didn't know how to respond and hung up.
At the Thomas family mansion, Michael sat on the couch in the darkened living room, curtains drawn, no lights on.
He held a cigarette, its glow flickering in the darkness.
After a moment, he called out softly, "Ronnie Ford."
A figure emerged from the shadows, stopping respectfully in front of him. "Mr. Thomas, what can I do for you?"
Michael took a drag from his cigarette, slowly exhaling smoke rings, speaking calmly. "Ronnie, you've been my most trusted bodyguard for the longest time. I want to know who is so desperate to get that box, even threatening my daughter."
Ronnie bowed respectfully. "Mr. Thomas, I know what to do. I won't disappoint you."
Michael nodded lightly.
Ronnie quickly and quietly disappeared, just as he had appeared.
In the top-floor office of FutureTech Robotics Group, Jennifer had just hung up with Margaret and was about to call the producer to check her location.
She glanced at the TV on the wall, which had been showing shopping information.
The scrolling ticker at the bottom reported a serious traffic accident on the main road outside Whispering Pines Estates.
A black SUV had collided with a sand truck. The driver and passenger, a man and a woman, were dead on the scene.
Jennifer's face turned pale. She grabbed the remote and switched to the local news channel, seeing the crash site.
The black SUV she had seen once before was now a heap of scrap metal. Ambulances were at the scene. Police were placing the deceased on stretchers.
Jennifer watched in horror as the stretcher revealed a blue dress under the white sheet.
Today, the producer had worn a blue dress when she met Jennifer!
Jennifer stepped back, clutching her chest.
No! She had failed again!
The crash was so severe, the red box was likely destroyed too.
With all of Michael's resources and methods, he would eventually find out that she was behind it. He would come for her!
Jennifer felt a chill in her heart.
At the Thomas family mansion, Michael remained in his spot, unmoving.
He pondered how he would handle things if the contents of that box were discovered.
Ronnie called.
"Mr. Thomas. Jennifer's assistant was spotted at the airport. Jennifer just left the country, a last-minute decision."
"The black SUV seen outside Elizabeth's house at Whispering Pines Estates crashed shortly after leaving. No survivors. The cause of the accident is still under investigation."
