Chapter 418 Rupture

Since he was going to marry Margaret, why would he care about her and the kids' feelings?

If he cared, he wouldn't be marrying into the Taylor family in the first place.

It was Margaret, for crying out loud! How could Michael not know the deep-seated hatred between her and Margaret?

Margaret caused her to give birth prematurely, making Sarah lose her child and her chance to be a mother forever.

If the bodyguards hadn't arrived in time, who knows what terrible things might have happened to Sarah.

Margaret even indirectly caused Eloise's death. And Michael can forgive even that?

Of course, he was still a businessman at heart, putting profit above all else.

He once swore to avenge Jennifer, but that came to nothing. Jennifer must have offered him benefits he couldn't refuse, right?

Elizabeth took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down.

She couldn't just condemn Michael based on one online comment. She couldn't act impulsively. She needed to stay calm. She should give him a chance to explain himself.

What if, just what if, it was all a lie? Wouldn't she be wronging him?

She forced herself to close her eyes and go back to sleep. In her heart, she said, 'Michael, don't let me down.'

Early the next morning, Michael got out of bed quietly. Behind him, Elizabeth opened her eyes almost simultaneously.

"Michael, where are you going?"

Michael didn't expect her to wake up so early. "Go back to sleep. It's still early."

Elizabeth sat up. "You still haven't answered my question. Are you going back home today?"

Michael was taken aback, seemingly not expecting this reaction. "Yeah, I have to go."

He continued getting dressed. "Don't you have work? I saw a medical file on your desk."

Elizabeth got out of bed too. "Yeah, but the patient's family said it's not urgent. I can do the surgery when I have time. Did you look at the file?"

Michael hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "Yeah. It looks a lot like Eloise's condition."

Elizabeth nodded, but her tone lacked the usual warmth. "Not being able to save Eloise has always been my regret."

Michael was already dressed. "That wasn't your fault."

Elizabeth changed the subject. "Are you in such a hurry to go back because you have something urgent to deal with?"

Michael hesitated, somewhat unnaturally. "Yeah, there's something urgent."

Elizabeth stood in front of him. "So urgent that you don't even have time to say goodbye to the kids?"

"Elizabeth, I..."

Michael was flustered. He guessed that Elizabeth already knew about his engagement to Margaret.

Seeing him not answer, Elizabeth pressed on. "Are you going back to marry Margaret?"

Michael was completely stunned. "Elizabeth, how..."

Elizabeth's face was icy. "How did I find out? The internet is so advanced now, news spreads so quickly. If I didn't know, were you planning to keep it from me forever? Are you taking revenge on me? Do you enjoy seeing me fooled by your lies? And what about Pearl? What did she ever do to you to deserve being deceived like this? She's so young. Will she ever trust anyone again?"

Michael's eyes were red, his heart aching more than Elizabeth's.

He couldn't tell her the truth. He didn't care how the world saw him or judged him. But he didn't want Elizabeth to look down on him. He'd rather have her hate him.

He didn't want that secret to be made public. He didn't want Pearl and Nolan to be pointed at and talked about.

"Michael, Margaret and I are enemies. If you really marry her, we'll be enemies from now on. Are you sure?"

Michael painfully ignored the tears on her face, turning his back to her. "Elizabeth, give me some time. Things aren't what you think."

"Then what is the reason? Are you being blackmailed? Does Margaret have something on you?"

Michael couldn't answer. He almost fled in embarrassment.

Elizabeth shouted after him, "If you leave like this, you'll never see me and the kids again! Think it over!"

There was no response.

She wiped away her tears and opened the door, almost bumping into Susan.

Susan was holding Francis, with Pearl standing beside her. They both looked at her.

Pearl's face was unusually serious. "Mom, I heard everything. Dad is going to marry someone else, right?"

Elizabeth nodded with difficulty. "Yes."

Pearl's eyes filled with tears, but she held them back. She continued, "He doesn't want me anymore, does he?"

Elizabeth shook her head. "No. No matter who he marries, you, Nolan, and Francis are still his children. That will never change. He just... doesn't want me anymore. And I... I don't want him anymore either."

Elizabeth thought she was strong, but she still cried.

Pearl reached out her small hand and gently wiped away her tears. "Mom, I support you. Nolan was right about him. He said Michael was a jerk. We were the ones who chose to believe he would change. Whether he acknowledges me as his daughter or not, I've decided I don't want him as my dad. A man who goes back on his word doesn't deserve to be my dad. Mom, you deserve someone better to love you."

Elizabeth couldn't hold back anymore and hugged Pearl tightly.

Once she calmed down, she walked over to Susan and took Francis. "Susan, I've always respected you and am very grateful for your help and care for Francis. But as you can see, Michael and I have parted ways. It wouldn't be right for you to stay here."

Susan shook her head. "Elizabeth, please keep me. I've grown attached to Francis while taking care of him. I can resign from Mr. Thomas' employment and you can pay me instead. That way, I'll be your employee and follow your orders."

Elizabeth agreed. "Alright."

Her mind was in turmoil, her thoughts complex. She needed to think carefully about her future.

She needed to completely forget the years of back-and-forth with Michael. This man had hurt her time and again. She needed to completely remove him from her life.

She went back to the room and packed Michael's clothes into his suitcase. He had left in a hurry, taking almost nothing but his phone and passport.

She dragged his suitcase downstairs and handed it to Susan. "Susan, could you please send Michael's luggage back to him?"

Susan took it. "Sure, Elizabeth. There's chicken soup in the kitchen for you. Don't forget to drink it."

Elizabeth nodded and went upstairs, feeling lost.

Susan watched her go up, then took out her phone and called Dean, telling him about Elizabeth's sudden ordeal.

"Dean, should you call Sarah? I think Elizabeth's mental state isn't right. Should Sarah come to stay with her? I'm afraid something might happen if she's alone in her room."
