Chapter 286 Yielding
Elizabeth rushed back to her room and quickly took a shower. Just as she stepped out of the bathroom, her phone rang.
It was Susan calling. "Elizabeth, Eloise is sick and keeps calling your name. I asked if she wanted Dr. Griffin to come, but she insisted on seeing you."
Elizabeth could never be hard-hearted about Eloise. Despite what she had told Michael about not treating Eloise, she was genuinely worried when something happened to Eloise.
Elizabeth quickly got dressed and drove to the Thomas family mansion.
Susan had been anxiously waiting at the door. As soon as she saw Elizabeth's Range Rover pull up, she opened the door immediately.
She said, "Elizabeth, you're finally here. Eloise has been waiting for you."
They hurried inside.
However, at the gate, the sound of screeching brakes echoed.
Calla rushed over and asked, "Susan, why is Elizabeth here? Didn't Michael divorce her a long time ago?"
Susan glanced at Elizabeth, feeling awkward. "Dr. Griffin, it's because Eloise isn't feeling well..."
Yet Calla interrupted, "I know Eloise isn't well. She called Michael, and he asked me to come over and check on her."
Susan looked even more troubled and turned to Elizabeth. "Elizabeth..."
Elizabeth didn't want to make things difficult for Susan. "It's okay, Susan. Since Michael has already arranged for someone to come, I'll leave," she said.
Susan hesitated, wanting to say more.
Yet Calla shot a triumphant look at Elizabeth and headed upstairs.
As she passed Elizabeth, she gave her a hard shove and said, "Get out of the way!"
Elizabeth, already unsteady on the stairs, was thrown against the railing.
She lost her footing and stumbled down several steps.
Susan, standing in front of her, broke into a cold sweat.
She cried out, "Elizabeth!"
Elizabeth's mind went blank. Instinctively, she grabbed the railing and managed to steady herself.
Susan rushed over, her heart pounding. "Elizabeth, are you okay?" she asked.
Elizabeth shook her head and replied, "Don't worry, Susan. I'm fine, just a scare."
Susan gave Calla a reproachful look and said, "I'll make sure Mr. Thomas knows about this."
A deep voice sounded from the doorway. "Knows about what?" Michael asked.
Susan quickly walked over to him. "Mr. Thomas, you're finally back."
Michael asked, "How's Eloise?"
Susan replied, "Dr. Griffin just went into her room."
Michael turned to Elizabeth and asked, "What are you doing here?"
Elizabeth scoffed. "I know I'm not welcome. So, I'm leaving now." She then headed for the door.
Michael quickly grabbed her arm and explained, "That's not what I meant. I was just asking."
Susan hurriedly explained, "It was Eloise who asked me to call Elizabeth over."
She added softly, "Eloise doesn't like Dr. Griffin treating her."
Hearing this, Michael started up the stairs and said, "I'll go check on her."
He then glanced back at Elizabeth, his eyes full of unspoken words. "Don't leave yet," he said.
Elizabeth thought for a moment and decided to stay. She sat down on the familiar couch.
Susan brought her some fruit. "Elizabeth, have some fruit while you wait for Mr. Thomas."
Elizabeth replied, "Thanks, Susan."
Upstairs, muffled shouting could be heard through the closed door.
Elizabeth remained unfazed, focusing on eating grapes.
She had heard that eating grapes during pregnancy could give the baby beautiful big eyes.
She thought, 'Might as well eat more.'
In Eloise's room, Calla was arguing with Michael.
"Michael, what do you mean? Why are you suddenly stopping me from treating Eloise?" she asked.
Michael replied, "It's nothing personal, Calla. I need to respect Eloise's wishes."
Calla screamed, "But Michael, I've been treating Eloise for so long. I've been working on a plan for her third surgery. You can't just let all that go to waste!"
Michael said, "So what if it goes to waste? Isn't the money I gave you enough compensation?"
Calla said, "Michael, that's not what I meant."
Michael retorted, "But that's what I mean. Calla, don't think I don't know you invested all that money into Jennifer's company. You know very well that woman is Elizabeth's enemy. Yet you got so close to her and even tied your interests together. Don't you know her daughter hired someone to kill me years ago and almost succeeded?"
Calla's eyes widened. She hadn't known about the deep hatred between Jennifer and Michael.
She slumped into a chair, defeated.
Michael looked at her coldly and continued, "And on my way here, I watched the living room surveillance."
Calla looked up, confused. "Surveillance?"
Michael continued, "You almost caused Elizabeth to fall down the stairs."
Hearing this, Calla lost control and shouted, "Michael, we haven't officially broken up yet! And you and Elizabeth, you've been divorced for so long! Why do you still only care about her? Why can't you see me? Am I not pretty enough? Not charming enough?"
However, Michael slapped her and shouted, "Calla! You've crossed the line!"
Calla lay on the floor, holding her face. She laughed bitterly. "In the end, I still lost to her!"
She struggled to her feet and staggered out.
As she passed Elizabeth, she shot her a venomous look. "Elizabeth, I won't let you off! And neither will Jennifer!" With that, she slammed the door and left.
Michael came downstairs and approached Elizabeth. He said, "Come with me."
But Elizabeth was still peeling grapes. "These grapes are pretty good. I haven't finished yet."
Michael asked, "Aren't you going to treat Eloise?"
Elizabeth looked up. "Can't Calla treat her?" she said this as she stood up and headed for the stairs.
Michael sighed. "Didn't you see I already kicked her out?"
Elizabeth entered Eloise's room and went to her side.
Eloise grabbed Elizabeth's hand. "Elizabeth, I'm actually fine. I just missed you. I'm sorry for making you worry."
Yet Elizabeth awkwardly pulled her hand away and said, "It's okay. Susan and Michael were probably more worried about you."
Michael sat down and said, "Eloise, I fired Calla. She won't be around anymore."
Eloise asked, "So, Michael, is she still your girlfriend?"
Michael shook his head. "No. There was never any real feeling between us."
Hearing this, Eloise hugged him. "That's great, Michael. You don't have to sacrifice your happiness for me anymore."
Michael smiled.
Yet Elizabeth was stunned and asked, "Why so sudden? Don't you need her to continue treating Eloise?"
Michael smiled at Eloise. "Eloise is doing better than I ever expected. She can take care of herself now. Even if she doesn't have surgery, it's fine."
He turned to Elizabeth, looking a bit aggrieved. "I kicked Calla out because I didn't want you to be mad at me."
Elizabeth's mouth dropped open. She thought, 'What just happened? The always strong-willed Michael is actually softening up to me? Could it be just because I'm pregnant?'
