Chapter 561 Ex-Husband
Michael left to find Gerald.
Rufus stayed with Elizabeth in the hospital room.
Elizabeth was gasping for breath, as if someone was choking her.
"Rufus, why are they doing this to Glenn? Why?"
Elizabeth thought sadly, 'Why do the people around me always meet with misfortune? Am I a bringer of bad luck?'
Michael returned to the mansion.
Cordelia saw him and walked over, beaming. "Michael, you're back! When is Dad getting out of the hospital?"
Michael looked at her coldly. "Cordelia, do you know Glenn?"
Cordelia's face turned pale. "Glenn? The neurosurgeon at the hospital? The name sounds familiar. Why?"
Michael frowned. "You don't know him?"
Cordelia forced a smile. "Do I have to know him? What happened?"
Michael stared at her expression. "He's dead! Poisoned. The toxin is rare. But, coincidentally, the Murphy family lab has that toxin."
Cordelia blinked and exchanged a glance with a servant before quickly saying, "Michael, I can't get into the Murphy family lab. Dad never lets me near that stuff. He says it's dangerous."
Cordelia timidly tugged at Michael's sleeve. "Do you think someone from the Murphy family killed Dr. Cole?"
Michael took a deep breath. "Besides the Murphy family, I can't think of anyone else who'd want him dead! He's just a regular doctor! Who would hate him enough to kill him?"
Cordelia asked timidly, "Michael, are you this angry because of Elizabeth?"
Michael brushed her hand away and stormed out.
Cordelia swayed slightly, a bitter smile on her face. "Did you see that? I just got rid of a minor character in Elizabeth's life, and he lost it! If one day, I kill Elizabeth, will he go mad? And then kill me?"
A servant came over and helped Cordelia to the couch. "Ms. Murphy, don't be sad. You're pregnant. The baby can sense your emotions. When the baby grows up, Mr. Thomas will fall in love with you."
Cordelia alternated between crying and laughing, eventually falling asleep in the servant's arms.
Michael arrived at Gerald's hospital room.
Gerald smiled when he saw him. "Michael, I've been in the hospital for so long, and I finally get to see you while I'm awake."
Zander looked at him smugly.
Michael remained calm. "Gerald, you're getting out soon, right?"
"The doctor said I'm recovering quickly. I'll be discharged tomorrow."
Michael walked over. "Is the hospital stay comfortable? Are the doctors treating you well?"
Gerald nodded. "The doctors here are excellent. No wonder, since it's a Murphy family investment!"
Michael pressed on. "So, why did you have to go after Dr. Cole? What did he do to you?"
Gerald frowned, looking puzzled. "Who? Who are you talking about? Which Dr. Cole?"
Zander, standing beside him, coughed awkwardly.
"Gerald, Dr. Cole is Elizabeth's classmate, the surgeon for her operation, Glenn."
Gerald seemed to have an epiphany. "Oh, Dr. Cole! What about him? What did I do to him?" He glanced at Zander, who lowered his head.
Gerald had a rough idea of what was going on.
He glared at Michael, speaking as if it was obvious. "Just a doctor! So what? Even if I killed him, who would come after me? I just didn't like him. So what? He operated on Elizabeth! I lost my son! Don't think Everett's death is the end of it! You had a hand in this! I can't kill your son to avenge mine! I just can't stand Elizabeth having a good life! So I'll kill the people she cares about!"
Michael's chest heaved with anger. He turned and left the room.
As he walked, he thought about how this was the Murphy family's territory. Gerald had immense power in Majestic City. Killing someone was as easy as squashing an ant for him.
Michael headed to Elizabeth's room, where he heard crying. He rushed in without knocking.
Inside, a woman dressed as a nurse was sitting on the couch opposite Elizabeth's bed, crying her eyes out.
"Elizabeth, you know Glenn and I were getting married next month. Who could be so hateful, so cruel to poison him? When the neurosurgery department called me, I thought it was a prank! Who knew it was real? Elizabeth, I wish this was a nightmare! That I'd wake up and Glenn would be fine."
Rufus saw Michael enter and quickly approached him. "Mr. Thomas, you're finally here! This woman is Glenn's fiancée! She's been crying here. I'm a man, I can't just drag her out. Ms. Jones just had surgery and needs rest, she can't be upset."
Michael stood in front of the woman. "You're Glenn's fiancée?"
Tears still on her face, she nodded. "Yes."
Michael said, "Come with me."
The woman looked puzzled. "Who are you? Why should I listen to you?"
"Because I'll help you with Glenn's funeral arrangements and get you justice."
Michael glanced at Elizabeth. "Elizabeth will tell you who I am."
The woman's tears flowed again. "I'll avenge Glenn myself. I won't rely on anyone else."
Michael frowned. "Do you know who killed him?"
The woman looked confused, then determined. "I'll find out! Glenn won't die in vain! I'll make the killer pay!"
Michael led the woman outside. "Glenn was Elizabeth's friend. I won't ignore his fiancée. I'll get him a burial plot so he can rest in peace. As for you, I'll give you some money. You probably don't want to stay at this hospital. You can take the money and start over. Whether you live alone or find someone new is up to you."
The woman wiped her tears, puzzled. "Why are you helping me?"
Michael hesitated. "Glenn was poisoned because he was Elizabeth's friend. The killer is from the Murphy family. You can't take them on."
The woman frowned. "The Murphy family? Gerald?"
Michael looked up. "What are you planning? Don't tell me you want to kill Gerald."
The woman stood up. "Thank you for telling me. As for the money, I don't need it. Glenn and Elizabeth were friends. Glenn's death isn't Elizabeth's fault. Their friendship isn't a reason for the murder! Gerald is to blame, not Elizabeth."
She looked at Michael. "You're Michael, right? Elizabeth's ex-husband."
Michael didn't know how to respond to that title.
