Chapter 87 I Won't Forget You Forever
Elizabeth stared at Margaret, her face blank. "I saw this coming ages ago. Nobody in Aurora Bay wants to back the Jones Group, so why is Samuel so keen? Even if the Super Brain system is top-notch, is it worth the risk for him? He must have some hidden agenda. That's why I never signed anything with him."
Margaret kept laughing, "You're not dumb. But Samuel's out of the picture, and Michael's still around. I heard he's planning to throw a billion dollars your way. Doesn't matter, you two are married. Investing in your company is like investing in his own, right? Elizabeth, looks like you still came out on top."
Margaret's laughter continued, her hair a mess, lipstick smeared. Tears mixed with eyeliner streaked down her face.
She looked both pitiful and pathetic, like she had completely fallen apart.
Her feelings for Michael had been her mental support all these years.
Now that support was gone, her mental world collapsed along with it.
Elizabeth felt that Margaret's mind had already shattered.
Seeing she couldn't get any more info from Margaret, Elizabeth left to find the head of Zenith Investments' Aurora Bay branch.
Soon, Elizabeth found the head of Zenith Investments. She told him the Jones Group wouldn't be taking their investment.
The person in charge silently nodded to show understanding; in reality, they weren't very optimistic about this investment either.
Elizabeth looked at the employees happily playing on the mountain and suddenly felt a pang of guilt that she had let them down.
But she was also just a girl in her early twenties; she couldn't take care of everyone's feelings.
However, she believed she would have another chance.
Eventually, Elizabeth didn't accept any investment. She announced the Jones Group's bankruptcy a month in advance.
During that month, the finance and HR departments worked together to clear and list the employees' salaries and compensation.
A month later, the court liquidated the Jones Group's assets and debts.
Throughout the process, Elizabeth never signed the inheritance documents Robert left her.
So, the Jones Group's debts had nothing to do with her.
Michael, who was in the hospital, also heard the news. He didn't expect Elizabeth to be so stubborn.
She not only rejected him but also rejected Samuel. The Jones Group is the culmination of Robert's life's work.
Michael thought to himself, 'Elizabeth, what is it that you really want?' Everyone was in confusion.
The weather had noticeably turned colder. The leaves on the trees along the road had turned yellow.
After a rain in the winter, the road was covered with fallen yellow leaves blown by the wind.
One day, Sarah told Elizabeth there would be a Sagittarius meteor shower that night and invited her to watch it together.
The two of them went to Everpeak Mountain.
It hadn't been long since they had a team-building event there last time.
But Elizabeth felt as if a long time had passed.
When they had been here last time, the trees on the mountain were still lush, the wild grass was also very dense.
Now, the wild grass on the mountain had turned yellow. Most of the leaves on the trees had fallen. The babies are also growing healthily inside Elizabeth.
Because it was the off-season for tourism, many hotels were closed.
The folks climbing the mountain to catch the meteor shower were mostly young people.
Most were couples, and some were astronomy buffs.
Sarah and Elizabeth got there early and snagged a prime spot.
They settled on a big, flat rock with a killer view, perfect for watching the meteor shower.
Elizabeth wasn't super excited. She was really just there for Sarah.
She asked, "Sarah, why didn't you bring David along?"
Sarah looked at her, eyes sparkling.
She chirped, "Elizabeth, you were my best friend in college. We're about to graduate and go our separate ways. I don't know when we'll see each other again. But David and I are together every day. Our time is running out. I want to make some great memories with you."
Tears welled up in Sarah's eyes. She usually acted like she didn't care about anything.
Elizabeth rarely saw her so serious, and it made her a bit sad.
Elizabeth held Sarah's hand. "Sarah, don't worry. Even after graduation, even if we're not in the same city, we'll still be close. You'll always be my best friend. I'll never forget you."
They leaned on each other, heads together, holding hands, quietly waiting for the meteor shower.
Suddenly, meteors streaked across the sky.
Sarah shouted, "Quick! Elizabeth! Look at the meteors! Make a wish!"
Elizabeth closed her eyes, clasped her hands in front of her, and sincerely wished for her application to be successful.
When she finished her wish and looked up, there were still a few meteors streaking across the sky.
She thought, 'If I make two wishes now, will the angels think I'm greedy?'
She closed her eyes and silently wished, 'But I still hope to be with Michael. Of course, only if he can accept the babies in my belly.'
Sarah asked, "Elizabeth, what did you wish for?"
Elizabeth replied, "I can't say it out loud, or it won't come true. Don't worry, I'll tell you someday."
When the first snow of the winter fell, Elizabeth got a call from Emily's lab.
Emily's assistant said they had received Elizabeth's application email for Emily's graduate program. Emily had also reviewed her thesis materials and her academic records from college.
The assistant said Emily was looking forward to her joining and that the acceptance letter had been sent to her school.
At that moment, Elizabeth got a notification about an international package that needed her signature.
She thought it must be the acceptance letter from Emily's lab.
Just after hanging up, Sarah called.
Sarah sounded relaxed, "Elizabeth, did you see? It's snowing outside. How about we have Mexican food tonight?"
Elizabeth laughed and said, "Sure, it's on me."
Sarah was surprised. "Elizabeth, did you win the lottery? You're so generous this time."
Elizabeth laughed and said, "No, but I have some good news to share with you."
Sarah shouted on the other end. "Great, I love good news. I'll tell David to sort out his own dinner tonight. We'll go out to eat."
Elizabeth said, "Why don't you two come together?"
Sarah chirped, "This must be great news. You can even tolerate David and are inviting him to dinner. I have to tell him the good news that you've forgiven him."
Elizabeth had even forgiven Michael. So, how could she not forgive the innocent David?
