Chapter 446 The Suspicious Man
Not far behind Elizabeth, Michael was glaring coldly at Carter, his gaze as if he wanted to kill him.
Carter grinned, "Sorry for the trouble, Elizabeth."
"It's no big deal. I'm just glad you could make it today."
"Elizabeth, you always treat me like a guest."
She raised her phone and kept snapping pictures. When she was done, Carter moved closer to check them out.
He stood so close behind her that it looked like he was hugging her from the side.
Elizabeth felt a burning stare from behind, like it could set her on fire.
From across the room, Dean, who was busy entertaining guests, noticed the tension. Carter and Michael were having a silent showdown, while Elizabeth seemed clueless.
"Elizabeth!"
A woman's voice called out.
Elizabeth quickly turned and saw Sarah, arm-in-arm with David, walking in.
Elizabeth said goodbye to Carter and went to greet Sarah.
"Sarah, you finally made it!"
Sarah's cheeks were a bit flushed. She nudged David, "Weren't you looking for Michael? Go ahead."
David reluctantly let go of her arm, "I'll catch up with you later."
Sarah nodded, "Okay."
Elizabeth watched their sweet interaction, her lips curling into a smile, "Sarah, you two are even more inseparable than when you first fell in love."
Sarah grabbed her arm and pulled her aside, "Elizabeth, we finally did it!"
Elizabeth looked at her encouragingly, "Sarah, I've always said you're brave."
Sarah whispered in her ear, "Last night, we had a lot of wine. We got tipsy and made love."
Elizabeth smiled at her, "Sarah, one day you'll overcome all your inner obstacles and be with David without any reservations, completely in sync."
Sarah's eyes were filled with hope, "I believe that too."
Pearl and Nolan walked over.
"Sarah, you're finally here. Let's cut the cake together!"
Sarah crouched down and hugged the kids warmly.
"Thanks for waiting for me."
She stood up, holding a child's hand in each of hers, "Alright, let's go cut the cake."
Despite the underlying tensions, the party went smoothly and successfully.
In the evening, Elizabeth and Dean took Pearl and Nolan back to Whispering Pines Estates.
Elizabeth urged the kids to wash up and get to bed quickly.
She had been standing in high heels almost all day and was exhausted. All she wanted now was to collapse into bed.
After she finished washing up, Susan brought Francis over.
"Elizabeth, you haven't seen Francis all day. Did you miss him? This little guy sure missed you."
Elizabeth had just showered and changed into her pajamas. She held Francis in her arms and gently kissed his forehead.
"Mommy's little darling, did you miss Mommy today?"
Francis stared at her with his big, bright eyes, not blinking.
Susan laughed, "You know the nursing top you wore last night? I was about to wash it, but Francis saw it and clung to it tightly, refusing to let go. I think he missed you."
Elizabeth looked at Francis in her arms, her heart swelling with tenderness.
"When Pearl and Nolan were weaning, they used to sleep clutching my clothes. My mom had to sneak the clothes away to wash them while they were asleep and then give them a clean one. But the next morning, they'd often wake up and cry when they saw the clean clothes."
Susan raised an eyebrow, "Why did they cry?"
Elizabeth chuckled, "They said the clothes didn't smell like Mommy."
Susan laughed, "Right, washed clothes smell like detergent."
Elizabeth nodded, "The clothes I wore had my sweat and milk scent. They didn't mind at all."
"Kids holding their mom's clothes to sleep must be seeking a sense of security."
Elizabeth sighed, "Yeah. Back then, I was juggling my studies and company affairs, missing my kids. It was so hectic. Thankfully, my mom helped me..."
Susan gently patted her shoulder, "Elizabeth, your mom would be happy for you every day. Don't be sad anymore. Look, Francis is watching you."
Elizabeth lowered her head and gazed tenderly at Francis.
Little Francis seemed to understand her, making cooing sounds.
Susan laughed, "Our Francis is trying to talk."
Elizabeth sighed, "Time flies! Francis is already six months old."
Susan smiled, "Yes, his birthday is coming up soon."
Meanwhile, the driver dropped Michael off at his place.
He sat on the couch, replaying the events of the party in his mind.
When he approached Elizabeth, she didn't show any obvious rejection. This meant she had forgiven him and was slowly accepting him again.
But when Carter approached Elizabeth, she didn't reject him either.
How infuriating!
Michael clenched his fist and slammed it onto the couch.
It seemed if he wanted to be with Elizabeth, he had to deal with Carter first.
He thought darkly, 'If only Carter could disappear from this world without a trace.'
A bodyguard came in to report, "Mr. Thomas, the security team has something to report."
Michael looked up, instantly recalling the suspicious man outside the estate.
Sure enough, the security personnel reported, "Mr. Thomas, that man has appeared again."
Michael stood up, his face stern, "Where is he now?"
"When I came over, the surveillance showed he was by the side of the wall."
Michael's face turned icy, "Catch him! Bring him here!"
"Yes, Mr. Thomas."
The security personnel left to carry out the order.
The bodyguard asked, "Mr. Thomas, should I go help?"
Michael nodded, "Yes, go ahead."
Soon, the bodyguard returned, dragging a disheveled man and throwing him onto the floor.
Michael sat on the couch, legs crossed, staring coldly at him, "Who are you? Why have you been lurking outside my house? Do you have some kind of plan?"
The man's hands were tied behind his back. He struggled to sit up, spitting out blood.
It seemed the bodyguard had roughed him up.
Clio was bringing Michael a glass of water. She looked down at the man on the floor and couldn't help but gasp.
Michael looked up, "Clio, do you know this man?"
