Chapter 67 She Got Slapped
Elizabeth looked up and said, "Margaret, Michael's still in surgery. I need to be here when he comes out. If you have something to say, it can wait until he's better."
Keeping her eyes on the operating room door, Elizabeth added, "And Margaret, who do you think you are talking to me like this? You're just Michael's suitor. To him, you might be nothing! I'm his wife. Our relationship is legally protected. Even if he's injured and needs surgery, only I have the right to sign."
Elizabeth's eyes carried a hint of mockery, "Margaret, you need to understand that you don't have the right. Please watch your tone when speaking to me."
Margaret stood there, stunned, her mouth open but no words coming out.
Elizabeth continued, "Margaret, let me make this clear: we will never be friends. If you want to stay here as Michael's friend, fine. But if you plan to keep attacking me, let me tell you, you don't have that right! Until Michael and I are divorced, I'm the only one who has the right to stand by his side, to go public with him, as his wife. And you," Elizabeth glanced coldly at the thunderstruck Margaret, "You can only step aside!"
Just then, the operating room door opened, and Elizabeth quickly stepped forward.
Margaret was about to move too but remembered Elizabeth's words and took a step back.
The doctor removed his mask and said to Elizabeth, "The surgery is complete. After a period of observation, once the patient's condition stabilizes, he can be moved to a ward for recovery."
Elizabeth said to the doctor, "Thank you."
She stood outside the door, waiting patiently.
Soon, the medical staff wheeled Michael out of the operating room.
Elizabeth and Margaret followed the medical staff, wheeling Michael into the surgical ward building.
A door to a room in the ward building opened, and a young male doctor walked out.
Margaret quickly stepped forward, spoke in a low voice to the male doctor, and occasionally glanced at Elizabeth.
No wonder Margaret could rush over as soon as Michael was admitted; she had a connection in this hospital.
Elizabeth ignored him and followed Michael into the ward.
Margaret said a few words to the male doctor, glancing at Elizabeth from time to time.
After saying goodbye to the male doctor, Margaret also followed them to Michael's ward.
After a while, Margaret's phone rang. She stepped outside the ward to answer it. Although it was unclear who was on the other end, her emotions appeared to be very agitated.
Elizabeth sat on a chair next to the bed, holding Michael's hand, and said, "Michael, you need to get better soon."
Before she could finish her sentence, her phone rang in her pocket.
Nancy's anxious voice came through the phone. "Elizabeth, where are you? Why haven't you come home yet? Are you okay? Do you need me to come get you?"
Elizabeth suddenly remembered that everything had happened so fast that she hadn't had a chance to call Nancy.
She had just told Nancy to go for a walk, but she didn't expect to be gone this long. It was already midnight, and she hadn't come home yet, so Nancy must be worried.
Elizabeth quickly said to Nancy, "Mom, I'm sorry I forgot to call you. Michael got hurt and is in the hospital. I'm staying with him, so I won't be coming home tonight."
Nancy, hearing that Michael was hospitalized, asked nervously, "Why is he in the hospital again? Is it serious? Are you wearing enough clothes? It's very cold outside. Should I bring you a coat? You couldn't catch a cold now."
Nancy's place wasn't close to the hospital, so Elizabeth quickly said, "Mom, the ward is very warm with air conditioning. I'm not cold here, and there's a bed for me to sleep on. Don't worry about me. You should get some rest."
Nancy said, "Alright, take care of yourself," then she hung up.
Michael was lying in bed, and Elizabeth felt she could take care of him alone, and Margaret was still outside.
Elizabeth silently watched Michael lying in bed, who was still unconscious from the anesthesia.
Even though she knew he couldn't hear her, she still whispered to him, "Michael, why do you hate children so much? Did you have an unhappy childhood? Looking at your family, they seem to treat you well. How could you be unhappy?"
She went to the bathroom and filled a basin with warm water, then gently wiped his hands with a handkerchief. His hands were covered in dirt. As she wiped, she murmured softly to Michael, "Was it because of your father? Did he abuse you when you were a child? But Mary loved you so much. How could she allow your father to abuse you? Michael, why do you hate this world so much? What bad things happened in your childhood? You don't even want to have children. Michael, I have so many questions for you. Please wake up and answer me, okay? I don't hate you anymore. I've completely forgiven you. I know you didn't mean to hurt me."
As Elizabeth was speaking, the door to the ward was suddenly pushed open forcefully.
Elizabeth was startled and quickly looked towards the door.
Mary, accompanied by bodyguards, stormed into the ward.
Mary's face was grim, and she walked quickly to Elizabeth. Before Elizabeth could react, Mary slapped her hard.
The swelling on Elizabeth's left cheek from a few days ago had just subsided.
And now, there was another hard slap.
Elizabeth covered her face and stood up from the bed, ready to retort.
But then she thought, 'Mary is worried about Michael, as any mother would be. Besides, Michael is indeed injured because of me. Mary is just venting her anger.'
Thinking this, Elizabeth stood aside with her head down quietly.
Mary pushed her away harshly.
Mary rushed to Michael's bedside, looking at the still-unconscious Michael.
Mary plopped down on the chair and started bawling again, "Michael! You just woke up, and now you're back in the hospital?"
She suddenly looked up, pointed at Elizabeth, and yelled, "Elizabeth, I'm warning you, stay away from Michael! You're nothing but trouble for the Thomas Family! Every time you show up, something bad happens! When Michael wakes up, I'm making sure he divorces you ASAP! This can't wait any longer!"
